Yep. I would never buy into anything with an HOA.
Move.
It’s called selective enforcement and it’s a common thing in HOAs, the board members and their allies get away with stuff and all the rest of the owners are targeted usually because of some personal vendetta.
I’ve been on the Board a couple of times, I was unpopular with the other Board members because my philosophy was, we needed fewer rules versus more so we could enforce a few rules that were black and white versus someone’s personal taste in things.
Where this really gets ugly is in neighborhoods that have an Architectural Review Board that has to approve color changes to homes that need painting or what trees can be taken down, etc.
The ARBs are nothing more than trouble waiting to happen, it comes down to friendships and someone’s personal taste on what gets improved versus what gets rejected.
Just rent a dominatrix and leave your neighbors alone.
HOAs are VERY American - freedom of association.
Would really be a shame if anything happened to them.
You are a smart person!
I would NEVER touch a HOA home either!!
Leek added that she believes the Cooper Mountain case is not representative of most HOAs, which she believes can be very positive for a neighborhood if run well with community involvement.
“...HOAs, are mandatory neighborhood organizations...”
No they aren’t. They are hired organizations that can be fired upon contractual determination. If the people that hired them did not read the contract and make sure they were not setting themselves up, they just terminate the service. And if they didn’t read and understand their committment in the contract, they deserve what they get.

Don’t know about this state’s laws, but in Florida it takes 75% of owners to change the bylaws. Something is not right if the Board does it. Participation in HOA Board meetings is usually low. People need to be engaged. Every year Board members are elected, if nobody submits their candidacy the same Board members are automatically elected.
In two respects, HOAs are like timeshares: Enter into them with extreme caution and they’re certainly not for everyone.
Purchasing a home covered by HOA covenants can bite you on the ass hard...
No HOAs for us either. Most of the places out around here have plenty of cars, boats, trucks, and whatever junk strewn around, and it doesn’t bother me a bit. As for property values, that works both ways. We probably got this place for a whole lot less than if the same house and lot had been in an HOA area.
I would concur with this. Though I have never been associated with an HOA, I never intend to either. In talking to those who have, I’ve found out that an HOA can easily turn into an interminable source of grief in which you necessarily have a large investment. I do have some things on my property which I can’t afford to repair that would probably put me in trouble with an HOA if one existed here...which it does not. There are no HOAs here that I know of, thankfully. I don’t think it would happen, but what if a group of my neighbors decided to setup an HOA? Some of us would automatically be put “behind the 8-ball”. That is not right to an established resident of a neighborhood. You could go into an HOA with good intentions, but circumstances might align that would put you into an impossible situation later on.
I’m so glad the HOA I was living in was thrown out - disbanded - a dozen years ago. 120 homes but 6 hardcore activist families made life hell for people until there was a recall, then the new board hired a lawyer and put an end to the HOA - with 90% voting to get rid of it!
The road to HOA Hell is paved with ‘good intentions’, but only with ‘approved materials’, of course........
Because you CAN NOT LEAVE.
That is the problem. There is no freedom. Like with socialism you have to shoot your way out.
Which is a lovely idea but certain un-American chumps tend to pee their lacy pink panties and cry about it.
