Although I hate the leftist Newsweek, I agree we have to be vigilant and have to get out the Pubbie vote by any and all means. Complacency or over-confidence is dangerous. Call, visit, cajole, offer gifts and get out all the GOP voters you know! The RATS must not be allowed to rule the House and the Senate! We know what that would mean.

Pardon me. I did not ask why you POSTED the article, I asked why you excerpted it. In your smart-ass response (#20), you indicate this article deals with a worthy topic and I agree. So, why did you EXCERPT this article?

It appears the sidebar moderator did it. Newsweek is covered in the WP/LA Times agreement.

I believe we are enjoined from posting Newsweak articles in full, as a result of the Washington Post lawsuit.

Because WashPost Company (which owns Newsweak) won't grant permission to post in full?

1) Newsweek has a notoriously bad record for accurate projections. The reason is: 2) this is a poll of "registered voters." Any fool knows that "likely voters" poll more Republican than "regitered voters" because Republican groups like older, wealthier, more educated, more religious, and married with children voters all turn out more, and vote more Republican.

The House is safe -- Republicans will gain there. The Senate will flip. Republicans will gain there. Newsweek is, as usual, a birdcage liner, except it uses slick paper that doesn't absorb bird droppings very well.

My sincere apologies Upchuck. I totally misconstrued your post (i guess because just last week some Freeper told me to 'watch what i say on FR and not to go against the grain' when i posted a statement he did not feel comfortable with). Thus i apologize for jumping into conclusions.

Anyways to answer your real question. The reason i exerpted it is because the Moderator informed me that any article from NewsWeek/MSNBC has to be exerpted. Furthermore when i originally posted this article i had the entire article, however a Moderator truncated almost all of it (apart from the two paragraphs you see) and hence for someone to read it they have to go to the excerpt link.

That is why.

Anyways again i am sorry for rushing off in judgement.

IF THE NOVEMBER ELECTIONS for U.S. Congress were held today, more registered voters say they would vote for the Democratic candidate (47 percent) than the Republican candidate (40 percent) in their district.

That's actually a Republican lead as the poll is typical of registered voters and not of likely voters.

Billybob is exactly right. The only question is, "how many net seats we will gain in the Senate." It has to be at least +2 to short-circuit a Chafee defection, and really needs to be +3 to keep McLame in the camp, permanently. It it is +4, I think we have a shot at getting Miller or Breaux to at least declare themselves as independents.

Polls are usually not worth the paper they are written on ...

And SOME polls, such as THIS one, are designed much more to help the unthinking FORMULATE their opinions than to measure them!

In general, we are not supposed to copy/paste an entire article. It violates copyright. Therefore we are supposed to exerpt and provide a link.

There are organizations that would like to see this forum disappear - and sueing for copyright violations and then having fines issued is a way to do that.

IF THE NOVEMBER ELECTIONS for U.S. Congress were held today, more registered voters say they would vote for the Democratic candidate (47 percent) than the Republican candidate (40 percent) in their distric

Notice that this is not likely voters but registered voters. Any poll that only polls registered voters is not worth much.

Secondly the house depends on Gerrymandering. From 1940 until 1990 the districts were gerrymandered to favor Democrats. Thus in the 1984 election when Reagan won the biggest victory in legislative history, and republicans got more votes for the house than Democrats, the Democrats still held the house.

In 1996 the democrats won the presidency and in 2000 it was a tie but in both cases Gerrymandering saw to it the Republicans held the house. In the 2000 redisctricting the Republicans gerrymandered a very few more seats. So this house will be easier to win than in 2000.

The majority of people in the USA still consider them selves Democrats. If you ask them are they going to vote for the Democrat they say yes. They may or may not be what they do on election day.

But the most important thing is turn out. When you only poll Registered voters you don't factor in turn out. The truth is Democrats have more trouble with turn out than do Republicans. There are more Democrats than REpublicans, but it is hard to get Democrats out to vote. If any of you have ever been involved in a race on behalf of the democratic side you know just how hard it is to get the Democrats out to vote.

Most of the lefts get out the vote efforts are taken care of by labor unions. I doubt if they will have the effort they did in 2000. But even if they do, they won't do any better than they did in 2000. And if they have less of an effort they will have fewer voters in 2002 than they did in 2000.

Say what you will about GORE, but he did a better job of getting out the Democratic vote than any Democratic presidential candidate in history. Gore got more votes than Clinton, Gore got more votes than Carter. Gore got more votes than Bush Sr in 1988. Gore got more votes than anyone in presidential history except Ronald Reagan

Gore is not running this year. I doubt the Democratic effort will equal 2000.

Know this about leftist media. They always give you the data shaded to make the left look better than it is.

When a Republican is way behind, "Experts say he faces certain defeat"

When a Democrat is way behind the Democrat "Faces the toughest race of his career."

This is the boys at Newsweek trying to get an early start at convincing those who would vote GOP to not bother showing up in November.

@#$% THAT!! Show up at the polls! Vote Republican! Take back the Senate!

LET'S ROLL!!

Your last sentence is very astute.

Question: it appears that we have a $16 million net financial advantage (just among the D vs R senate committees). Is this enough? Is it larger than usual at this point in the race?

Many thanks.

"While George W. Bush focuses on building support for war with Iraq, voters say they are most concerned about the economy."

This is blatant disinformation timed to counteract the preponderance of polls stating unequivocally that the RATS are gonna git their tails handed to them on the 5th of November!!!
