Okay you guys - be on your best behavior - no contractions in your language - be very simple in your language and make it easy to translate.
I just sent mine!! This is fun!

I'll post your thread over at the Canteen where they are asking Freepers to please write the troops and let them know that we're behind them: Support Our Troops Letter Writing Campaign.

BONSAI!!!Powell should follow this up with the gift of an entire Aircraft Carrier Battle Group and a handwritten note: "You may now re-arm with our blessing."
To: AmericanInTokyo
I'd like to send the following, but am curious how you think it would translate:
"I would like to express my deepest, humble gratitude to the government and the people of the mighty, noble Empire of Japan, for their support of our President and our nation, in a difficult and dangerous time, against a ruthless and cruel tyrant. America is truly a blessed nation, that time would turn our once most-feared enemy, into our loyal ally.
America remembers well the fearsome warrior spirit of Japan, and is honored and emboldened by its friendship. For if Japan stands beside us, there will be none who could stand against us.
Long live Freedom and Peace. Long Live Japan."
I want the sentiment to translate correctly, and am not sure how terms like "Long live" work in Japanese.

THANKS.
FITTING SUGGESTION.
DONE.

HA hA HA HA...
Sir,
"Bonsai" is a miniature tree/plant.
"Banzai" is that yell that the Japanese do for "Cheers" at parties and wishes you "10,000 lives!"
"Kampai" means cheers also.
Don't ask me the difference between the two "cheers". I just tell it like how I know it.

banzai is usually only for a cheer of wishing prosperity and so on, likewise it is used at inaugerations and campaigns of political canidates here, and so on.
kampai is for drinking only.

Actually, 'banzai' is not used for toasts. 'Kampai' (or 'kempai' occasionally) is used (it means literally 'dry the glass!'). 'Banzai' literally means, 'may the Emperor have a 10,000 year reign', but it is also used in happiness over a victory, sending a newlywed couple off on a trip, saluting the Emperor on his birthday or revering him at the Yasukuni Shrine, etc. 'Bonsai' (miniature tree art) just happens to sounds like 'banzai' (a salutation), but it is two entirely different words with two entirely different kanji characters and meaning. FYI (sorry to beat a dead horse!)

thanks, but I am afraid that may not work without Japanese font browser characteristics for both the sender and the receiver (i.e. to my knowledge/experience, Free Republic can handle Japanese fonts in HTML, but it cannot handle the J. fonts as mere text; therefore it comes out to all of us in weird, as you say, symbols and confusion); further, if automatic translation is used from the original English, it is liable to sound to the Japanese reader like 'Yoda' from 'Star Wars'.

Email sent. This was a very good idea. Having worked with some very nice Japanese gentlemen, I know this is the type of gesture they appreciate.
