Our local factory outlet has a Bose. I just called and the employee said he knew nothing about it and said he would be upset if it was true.

One thing Bose accomplished was to catch on to the "tiny speakers" idea very early.

With speakers, men are interested in how they sound, and their wives are interested in how they look. And the wives always want little tiny invisible speakers that don't ruin their interior decorating.

Big speakers ALWAYS sound better than small speakers, given the same quality design and components. You CAN make very small speakers that sound pretty good if you really make a lot of effort.

But Bose didn't; they simply went for a marketing campaign instead, making cheaply made tiny-speakers and convincing the clueless that they sounded good.

Name a hardware/software computer manufacturer that is superior to Apple. I'm especially interested in UI-responsiveness tests that demonstrate a higher target accuracy. Got any?

I am the classic uninformed consumer who would like a good sound system (mostly for classical, opera, early music) but doesn't have the time, interest, or technical knowledge to check things out carefully. The tiniest possible speakers consistent with good sound are essential (serious book proliferation problem and no spare floor space). Bose markets their small speakers very aggressively but I don't know where to begin comparision shopping. Recommendations?

Seems like I heard something about the guy who started Bose (or maybe it was the guy who invented the technology) went to the Naval Academy.

He is a graduate of MIT and at times teaches there.

I sent their "Advertising & Promotions Dept" this e mail:

I heard today that the corporate heads of BOSE have ordered that their employees take down all flags, and flag-related decorations from all stores so as not to offend customers. Please advise me if this is true. I would like to let others know if this is, in fact, your policy.

Ok folks, if you were planning on buying seriously overpriced Bose systems, consider CAMBRIDGE SOUNDWORKS. They are like 1/2 the price and just as good or better than Bose.

While this may sound like an advocacy post, it's not. Cambridge and Bose have been going at it for years. Time we tipped the scales.

You can find Cambridge speakers at:

I have the Bose wave radio and am unimpressed. Perhaps if you play it full blast it sounds like an orchestra in your home, but then I don't play it full blast and it's no different than listening on the radio.

There must be sites on the web that can give comparisons of stereo equipment.

Buy Cambridge Soundworks instead of Bose. Their speakers are 1/2 the cost and are just or good and better. Bose and Cambridge have been at it for years, so let's tip the scales against bose.

Cambridge equipment can be found at:

You are correct. I once met him years ago and mistook "Amar" for "Amr".

Hey if "UI-responsiveness" floats your particular boat, enjoy. Many BOSE-y's swear by "acoustic wave technology", too.

Every niche product has its particular cult.

Fortunately I, and most users, can do anything we want on a PC or another speaker, cheaper, and without enriching Al Gore or Amar Bose. YMMV.....
