Marin, a Republican, served in former governor Pete Wilson's administration and was mayor of Huntington Park, a small city outside Los Angeles. The California Republican Party, meanwhile, has moved the Boxer Senate race near the top of its agenda for next year...

From http://www.ustreas.gov/offices/treasurer/rosario-marin.html:

Treasurer Rosario Marin

Rosario Marin, the Treasurer of the United States, firmly believes that “of him to whom much is given, much is expected.” Today she is the highest-ranking Latina in the Bush Administration and the first U.S. Treasurer born outside of the country.

She remembers when her parents first brought her to the U.S. from Mexico. She was fourteen years old, didn’t speak any English and did not want to miss her quinceañera (that’s a young lady’s coming of age party).

Later on, immediately after graduating from high school with honors, she had to find a job to help her family. She attended East Los Angeles Community College for four years to get her two-year degree and three more years at Cal State University of Los Angeles to finish her Bachelors at night. Simultaneously she was moving up the ranks of City National Bank where she had started as the assistant to the receptionist. Six years later she was about to be named Assistant Vice President. God, however, had other plans for her.

Her first son Eric was born with Downs Syndrome. Her love for him spurred her into becoming a fierce advocate for people with disabilities. That in turn led to her being appointed to Governor Pete Wilson’s Administration in 1992 where she served for seven years. Her dedication to people with disabilities earned her the very prestigious Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Prize given to her at the United Nations in 1995.

She served as Mayor and councilwoman of Huntington Park, California, a city of 85,000 residents with a population that is 99 percent Hispanic. She was first elected to the City Council in 1994 and was overwhelmingly re-elected in 1999. In 2000, while serving the people of Huntington Park, Ms. Marin worked for AT&T as Public Relations Manager for the Hispanic Market in the Southern California Region.

Her commitment to public service led Ms. Marin to continue her education. She graduated from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government Programs for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. On June 15, 2002, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from her alma mater Cal State University, Los Angeles.

Rosario Marin was sworn in as the 41st Treasurer of the United States by Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill on August 16, 2001. As U.S. Treasurer, Ms. Marin’s traditional duties include oversight of the U.S. Mint and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. In addition, she is spearheading Treasury’s financial education outreach efforts and the Partnership for Prosperity efforts between the United States and Mexico.

She has graced the cover of various magazines including the Hispanic Business Magazine where she was named one of the 100 most influential Hispanics.

In addition to her son Eric, Ms. Marin and her husband Alex have two other children, Carmen and Alex.

As Treasurer Marin has noted, “both God and my parents were wiser than I when they saw fit to bring me to this great country where even unimaginable dreams come true.” Twenty-eight years after she first began, and a whole lifetime of tests later, she is proud to serve as Treasurer of the United States of America.

Her talent and experience appear to be administrative, not legislative. She sounds more like gubernatorial material than a senator. Mayhap she'd run if we depose Bray Davis? I would rather see Ray Haynes (sp?) or Tom McClintock take on Boxer, especially Haynes.

I am suspicious of anyone who has come from the Wilson administration. Is she even prolife?

If she's not a prolife conservative, then she doesn't stand a chance.

"If she's not a prolife conservative, then she doesn't stand a chance."

Maybe, maybe not. There's a big difference between an executive office and a legislative seat. With a legislative body, I, for one, am willing for some realpolitik to enter the calculation, while I wouldn't for an executive. The balance of power in the senate will be determined by party-line vote, and I would submit that core conservative values will be better served with the Republicans in charge, even if a particular senator from California is more liberal than I'd prefer.

Just a thought, and not an endorsment of Marin, 'cause I don't know her, but something to consider.

"Republican Party, meanwhile, has moved the Boxer Senate race near the top of its agenda for next year"

What the heck???

Here's the CA GOP agenda for the next year:
1. Recall Davis
2. Recall Davis
3. Recall Davis

What other explanation do we need for 30 Billion in deficit, failing schools, ruined healthcare, and state roads in disrepair?

Boxer's seat is contestable by: Arnold Schwarzeneggar, Condi Rice, and various Congresscritters.

Davis' seat is contestable by only one guy. That man is Davis. RECALLGRAYDAVIS.COM

Thanks for the biography of Rosario. From what was written about her having a child with Down's Syndrome leads me to believe she is pro-life, as mothers can be tested for Down's (and many subsequently abort).

I don't know.
To be honest, even though it leaves me wide open, I dont think abortion is as polarizing an issue as it once was.

I think the Latino backlash against Pete Wilson was overexaggerated. Even though Latinos make up 32% of CA, they have low voter participation rates. In the 2000 Presidential election, Latinos comprised only 14% of the CA electorate. This is despite heavy get-out the vote efforts by the RATS. Most Hispanics who come to America aren't interested in American citizenship. They just want to make money, so they can send cash back to their relatives in Mexico. Latino families also want their children to obtain a quality education in America in the hope that their kids will gain vital skills & knowledge to build up Mexico's economy. I predict the Latino immigrants sneaking across our borders now, will return to Mexico to retire in 30-40 years. Latino immigrants may live in the USA, but their hearts are in Mexico.

A perfect parallel would be African-Americans. Several blacks moved to the North to find employment and freedom during the early 20th Century. Today, these same blacks are moving back to the South to retire. Blacks whom I have worked with, often spoke fondly of the South. They longed for the simple, small town rural life they experienced when they were kids. In fact, black college graduates from the Midwest and West Coast are moving to Atlanta to achieve the American Dream.

I think the real reason for the CA GOP's collapse would be too mant white Marxists moving to Kalifornica and too many conservative Californians seeking refuge in Colorado Springs & Dallas.

I wish I could agree, but that backlash was there and still remains present (just leave it to a liberal Republican to get the whole damn party painted with some "right-wing racist" brush). The effect of it even seeped down to the "sucker moms" of the Caucasian variety. Two groups we've got to work on moving back to us in order to get the statewide wins again.

That's the thing, we don't really know what they're intending to do. I think perhaps the elders would consider returning back to Mexico or whatever Central or South American country of origin, but their children (born here) are going to be politically aware and voting and will not likely have any interest in returning to what (to them) would be a foreign country. The question is whether we can get those kids to the GOP side. If we don't, we're going to have a serious problem, nevermind California, but nationwide (losing elections based on demographics alone). If the 'Rats are successful in turning Hispanics into voting like Blacks, we will be screwed, and so will the country.

"I think the real reason for the CA GOP's collapse would be too mant white Marxists moving to Kalifornica and too many conservative Californians seeking refuge in Colorado Springs & Dallas."

The outmigration of Republicans started in the late '50s when some formerly longtime GOP seats permanently turned 'Rat (starting with the Oakland-Berkeley seat, and then spreading all over the San Francisco area, then L.A.). The last Republican Congressman from Berkeley fled to Idaho.

"She claims to be personally pro-life, but in terms of government is pro-choice. In other words, "I want my baby to live, but it's ok to kill yours." ... Not the sort we need!"

If true, that's very disappointing to hear. The big question remains if she is anti-partial birth. If she isn't, then I wouldn't vote for her in a million years.

"You leave out one option, Congressman George Radanovich. Chairman of the great Freshman Class of '94. From Mariposa, so will struggle a little getting the media's attention, but THE conservative's choice for '04!!!"

I like George, really I do, but there isn't a rats chance in hell he could win a US Senate seat in California unless they split the state in half, putting the leftist coastal counties in one state and Conservative inland in the other, and he could handily win the latter. 50 years ago, he would've been a strong contender statewide, but the demographics have changed dramatically.

"Isn't Boxer really a New York transplant?"

Yes she is, but she has been in Marin County for the past 30 years and took on all of their degenerate ideals. Marin was one of the last formerly GOP counties in the Bay area to fall to the Socialists.

She claims to be personally pro-life, but in terms of government is pro-choice.

Well that cinches it. There are two groups of people in this country. Those willing to look the other way while babies are slaughtered, and those who are appalled by it.

Boxer and Marin are members of the former, so I guess they'll split that vote. Most of them will go to Boxer. After all, if you like abortion you'll LOVE the Marin County infanticide queen.

Marin will do the same as John Seymour, Michael Huffington, Tom Campbell, Ruben Barrales, Gary Mendoza, Bruce McPherson and all the other pro-abort Reps who have run for statewide office in recent years as the "up and coming shining stars." She will lose, and lose badly, as prolife folks either stay home or pick a 3rd party candidate, or skip that ballot spot.

In the last election Bonnie Garcia took a surprise victory in a gerrymandered Dem Assembly seat. The district is highky hispanic (Imperial County) and they ran a prolife campaign - surprise. When people begin to realize that Hispanics are mostly prolife conservatives, maybe some day we will have a conservative prolife Republican statewide nominee who will clean up in this state.
