Cartoon was a 'slap across the face' to war protesters --Athens, GA

(The March 29) editorial cartoon depicts a group of war protesters, one of whom is featured wearing across his derriere a sign which reads, ''But, hey, we support the troops.'' The implication is obvious. The publication of this cartoon is a deliberate slap across the face by this newspaper and/or its owners and management to put down those protesters who genuinely disagree with the invasion of Iraq. And it implies the lie that a protester cannot oppose the war and support the troops at the same time. I challenge the Athens Banner-Herald, its owners and management to prove that point. The cartoon is a backhand across the face to those who are exercising their constitutional, democratic right to free speech. More seriously, it is a deliberate, flagrant misuse of a free press. The Athens Banner-Herald, its owners and management owe a public, printed apology to those who are protesting this war and who are showing by personal action and involvement what true democracy is all about.

More seriously, it is a deliberate, flagrant misuse of a free press. Where was this guy when Trent Lott was crucified by the "free press?"

So sedition is okay, but making fun of seditioners is not?

More seriously, it is a deliberate, flagrant misuse of a free pressIn other words criticism of "protected" groups is not allowed. Yet another example of "rights for me not for those who disagree" from the left.

A free press means the government can't come in and tell you what to publish, or not to publish (prior restraint). The Constitution doesn't say that newspapers can't insult targets of their chosing in their editorial cartoons. The only people who enjoy complete freedom of the press are publishers who own presses, and even they are limited by lawsuits. This guy thinks a "free press" means he can't be made fund of. That's not how it works.
