As far as I know, no one has died yet of SARS inside the U.S.

Quarantine
I'm sure this is exactly what is happening. I have a lot of confidence in our health care system and government being able to keep this in check. HHS came out early on with information and guidelines well before this story became well-known.
If nothing else, 9/11 and the terrorist threat has increased our vigilance and ability to quickly deal with contagious disease.
Why some are reacting so negatively and harshly about a handful of cases and NO deaths in the US is beyond me.

I agree emphatically!
This is garbage designed to promote panic. With the economic situation all this can do is hurt it more. Someone should be held accoutable.

Why some are reacting so negatively and harshly about a handful of cases and NO deaths in the US is beyond me.a) A sense of purpose
b) A sense of 'doing something' versus being simply a spectator
c) It looks *really bad* and the duty to fret overcomes some people
d) This is the 'Disease du jour' today
e) POWER over OTHERS in the form of FEAR feels GREAT.

Some perspective:
239 cases of SARS in US, approx. population of US 280,000,000=.0000085% infected.
I also heard a story on the news the other night that in all cases, health officials have been able to trace the source of the infection and transmission was limited to very close associates of the original carrier, i.e. family members, heath care workers, etc.

Makes sense, doesn't it? The high number of asians living in SF, the number of international travelers from Asian countries, etc.

This secrecy crap has got to go.Have you been warned *not* to talk with the following people about this disease yet: your neighbors, the girl at the checkout in the supermarket, your co-workers, truckers on CB channel 19, your in-laws, other posters on FR?
