A Few of FR's Finest.....
......Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. I can remember lurking when there were only a few regulars who posted, and now there are over 60,000 who have registered for posting privileges. The forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I can no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I've been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that doesn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why, in addition to seeing FR's Finest Military Personnel every day, I thought it might be fun to feature a different FReeper (or FReepers) each day. If you would like to be pictured, or know someone who would, please FReepmail me and we'll turn the spotlight - on YOU - for the day!

And do let me know if you'd like your picture added to the groups of Veterans/Active Military below. I will keep this page updated, and continue to add them to the comment section of the original Veteran's Day thread as well.

To Our FReeper FRiends: We hope you've been having as much fun as we have with our spotlight on various FReepers. We thought we'd kick back on the weekends and simply review those who've been featured during the week. If you missed seeing them and want to say hello to them now, feel free to click on the link to that particular thread. If you'd like to drop in and out of this thread today and tomorrow, please feel free to do that also. One of us will always be around to see the welcome mat is still out, and maybe even put fresh flowers on the table. :)

A husband and wife had been married only a few short years, and he was
getting fed up with being bossed around by his wife; so he went to see a
psychiatrist.

The psychiatrist told the husband that he needed to build his self-esteem,
and gave him a booklet on assertiveness to read.

By the time he reached home, he had finished reading the booklet. He
stormed into the house and walked up to his wife, pointed a finger in her
face and said, "From now on, I want you to know that 'I" am the man of this
house, and my word is law! I want you to prepare me a gourmet meal tonight,
and when I'm finished eating my meal, I expect a sumptuous dessert. Then,
after dinner, you're going to draw me my bath so I can relax. And then when
I'm finished with my bath, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair?"

"The funeral director?" relied his wife.

A blonde was out on a date. Her date said you have something on your cheek. So she wiped it off.

Then her date said, "No, the other side." So she reached into her mouth and wiped the other side.

HOLD OFF ON VICTORY PARADES, PLEASE

With Iraqi Freedom a three-week win war, there are those who want to throw the ticker tape all over the streets.

That’s the American way.

If there is ever a lovely preoccupation that Americans delight in giving themselves to wholeheartedly, it is partying. Much of our American lifestyle — daily and weekly — centers around our entertainment. Where are we going tonight? What are we going to see this weekend? Who’s got the party?

We are saturated in sports events parties, school parties, family parties. We have our party hats, balloons, noisemakers, banners and all the refreshment styles a Martha Stewart can dish out.

We as a nation surely know how to have a good time; and there certainly is no crime in that. With the angst that hangs upon the globe, it is healthy to be in a society that knows how to kick up its heels and say “hurrah!”

But when it comes to the Iraqi Freedom success — as well as the advances in Afghanistan — we’re coming to apples rather than oranges. This is not that. In other words, this is not the time to have a ticker tape parade in DC. Why?

First, because the conflict in the Middle East is still on-going. We are not finished yet. In other words, Iraqi Freedom was not a conflict sealed within itself. It is part of a global war against terrorism; and the rational know that that is not done and signed off.

Therefore, to party with ticker tape parade with the prime focus on the recent win could fly back in our face if the nation — God forbid — were hit with another major terrorist attack. The whole picture would not hold up, nor would the emotional fallout aftermath.

Secondly, we have the Fourth of July approaching. That would be an ideal time for communities throughout the nation to plan their own celebrations for Iraqi Freedom — not just the win for the US-led coalition, but the larger picture of a freedom win for Iraqis held captive over thirty years by Hussein the Horrible.

Thirdly, United States President George W. Bush has already voiced his desire for celebrations focusing on the troops. In other words, knowing that Iraqi Freedom will bring its own political reward, Bush does not want to misplace the greater applause. He has stated that he wants center stage reserved for the troops.

Of course, this is in keeping with Bush’s adherence to principle rather than polls. He has left the polls to the reasonableness of the American public; the principles for everyday presidential duties he has seen through because of his own ethical base.

New York’s Mayor is pushing Washington for a super parade. Of course. That’s what Manhattan can perform quite ably. And all would thoroughly enjoy such an extravaganza, like unto the American way of partying. But Washington is rethinking that proposition quite seriously these days, nodding naturally to the truth that New York City can finally do what it pleases.

It just seems that a “victory parade” doesn’t fit in right now, no matter how much the country would like to take advantage of the spring weather and “get on with the party.”

A sincere tribute to the troops and their leadership is rightly due; but there are other creative ways by which to do that. And a ticker tape parade doesn’t seem to fit the situation this time, especially with the realization that we are in an on-going war against global terrorism — that major victory yet to be fact.

Wow, and that's just the kinda day we have here. Cool, so not so bad for hiking. I'm off to play with my 3-year old niece and my 10-month old nephew. They LOVE their Aunt Nancy because my answer to any request is ALWAYS yes. :) (OK, some times I persuade them that they don't really want want they're asking for, but I never, never say "no." Aunts should never say "no"!)

His melody has captured me
With wonder in this hour so blessed.
I’m not deserving of His gift
Yet on my heart receive its crest.

I thank my God for loving me
With symphonies of heaven’s choice.
I pray that with my life I’ll serve
And so yield Him my humblest voice.
