I was thinking about Mary yesterday while at church, and wondered about how she was doing.

Your description of the sudden death of a loved one is right on the mark. My son was killed in a car accident when he was 18, so I have been thru it too. The tears she is crying are healing, if she can cry, thats good. She will need loving friends or a year or 2. Call her or see her everyday, if you can, if only for a minute or 2. Maybe she will want to talk about her son, maybe not, be flexiable. Not knowing this woman, I am not sure I would recommend drugs. My best to your friend & her family.

You mentioned in a prior post that Jabbar's brothers had not been "entirely out of trouble". Recall that I suspected gang activity early in the thread. Terelle's gang may have played a part in pressuring him and/or arming him. Now Mom and Dad have the burden of a defense attorney. Statistically, the cost of defending a legitimate self-defense shooting where the shooter is acquitted of criminal wrongdoing runs over $75,000 (in 1999).

Thanks for your thoughtful, insightful comments. A long time ago when I was a young mother, I lost two baby boys. Long story. Matthew was three days old when he died and Mark was still-born. Anyway, in order to survive the funeral and all the torment, my doctor gave me something to get me through. I forget the name of it. I only had to take it a few times. I'm not proud that I needed a drug but on the other hand I'm not ashamed either. I don't know how I would have been able to sleep . . . and you have to sleep in order to get better. Anyway, that was a long time ago and I survived. I will call Mary tonight and check on her. May the Good Lord bless us all as we strive day by day to be better.

I hadn't thought about the need for a defense attorney for Terelle. You know what I was just thinking? What if one of the gang members is making Terelle "take the rap"? Could the police be that "off"? I doubt it. Grasping at straws. Just can't believe Jabbar's own brother would kill him. But then . . . those damn drugs and gang life-style. I'm going to call Mary tonight. I probably won't say much except to inquire about her health and if there's anything I can do to help. I'll tell her that you are all concerned for her and that you're praying for her and her family.

Sometimes the answer to "prayers" comes in the form of competent action. I had a home teaching family that was on the verge of divorce due to overwhelming bills and the prospect of unemployment upon exit from his job in the Navy. I called a CPA from the ward to help them organize the bills. The husband worked on crypto gear for the Navy. I located the factory for the crypto gear and it turned out that 4 active bishops worked in that shop. He interviewed with them and locked up a solid job offer. Organizing the bills and fixing the prospect of unemployent relieved the stress in the marriage. They are still doing well...and that was a vintage 1988 occurrence.

The reason I said what I did about drugs is because depending on the person, it could easily go from 'something to let me sleep' to 'something to make me forget the pain'. As you know, nothing but the passage of time will do that.
