There's always a lot of discussion about Dr. Atkins and his diet recomendations here on FR.
Here's some more.
I hope this isn't a duplicate. I searched many different ways and didn't find anything.

"There's never been any denying that low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets such as Atkins do, absolutely, cause weight loss," she said. "But do they hold up over time and can you stay on them over time?"
Yup. Been on a low carb (100 grams per day) for a long time. I exercise and do lots of gardening so 100 grams is permissible. No blood sugar spikes. No blood lipid problems. No cravings.
What's so unnatural about a diet rich in eggs, cheese, natural and animal fats, meat, veggies, fruit, and soy based baked goods.
What's so natural about a diet loaded in refined sugars, sodas, refined flours, and artificial low fat deserts that taste like industrial waste with all the additives? Ever check the ingredients list of these products. Scarey...

What good tasting foods are there that are high protein, high fat, low carbohydrate and lower sugar as mentioned in the article ?
There are only so many ways one is able to make a tuna fish on dark rye sandwich or eat only cans of sardines and ice water.

"For the last 20 years that I've been helping people lose weight, I've been trashing the Atkins diet -- without any real data to rely on," said Dr. Michael Hamilton, an obesity researcher who was not part of either study. And you wonder why those of us who have had such success with his program get pissed off at you?
Dogmatic scientists piss me off. Take note dogmatic evolutionists.
I'm looking forward to the major food companies jumping on the band wagon and low-carb foods flooding the supermarkets. The dam has broken. Now how do I go about buying stock in Splenda?

The 132 men and women in the VA study started out weighing an average of 286 pounds. After six months, those on the Atkins diet had lost an average of 12.8 pounds, those on the low-fat diet 4.2. I've been doing Atkins since Sunday, and I'm down 12.8 pounds already. It's a little eerie, if you ask me. Like I just pressed a "lose weight" (that's "loose wait" in FReepSpeak) button.
Has anybody noticed slower healing while they are on Atkins? I know some people who have been on the diet, and they have had problems recovering from surgery, and the like. I also noticed that my wife, who is on the diet for a few weeks, got a bruise on her forearm that has not gone away after a week.
Does anybody out there have experience slow healing on Atkins?

"For the last 20 years that I've been helping people lose weight, I've been trashing the Atkins diet -- without any real data to rely on," said Dr. Michael Hamilton, an obesity researcher who was not part of either study. "Now we have some data to give us some guidance." Now, he said, he would neither trash it nor endorse it. "I'm going to say I don't know. The evidence isn't in," he said.
This guy still believes that second-hand smoke kills 40,000 people a year, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

I eat an Atkin's diet for lunch only. I'm not trying to lose weight but to avoid that horrible sleepy, sluggish feeling I get in the afternoon. It works.

Anyone, what is the limit in carbs. starting out? Can I use those prepacked salads? I looked at Atkins years ago and do not remember much about it. This week we had a death in the family and I had to go out and buy a black dress because mothing I had fit. Both the death and nothing that fit were a wake up call. Is there a web site anywhere that can get me started until I can get the Atkins book for more info.? Thanks!

I've found if I stay away from fried foods, and crazy stuff like Ice Cream and donuts....I lose Lbs. Those lbs don't come back if I continue to stay away from fried foods and Ice Cream/dunuts.
Pretty simple, and works good for me....

Last week the media reported extensively on two new studies published in the May 22 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. Both studies compared the results of individuals who followed a low-fat diet with those who did Atkins or an Atkins-type low carbohydrate program.
The results of the studies add to the growing body of evidence supporting the low carbohydrate approach and are consistent with the findings of other recent trials comparing Atkins to low-fat programs. In both of the new studies, the low carbohydrate participants lost more weight and showed greater improvements in cardiovascular risk factors than did the low-fat participants.
Despite these positive findings, media coverage was inconsistent. Let us give you the full story, based solely on facts, for each study.
The Veterans Administration Study The research conducted by Frederick F. Samaha, M.D., et al, is one of the first studies that has looked at significantly obese patients. The 132 subjects weighed an average of 288 poundsand many also had diabetes or the metabolic syndrome (a prediabetic condition), heart disease, hypertension and high total cholesterol. Half the volunteers were placed on a low carbohydrate program, the others on a conventional low-fat program. After six months, the individuals on the low carb arm of the study had lost more weight and demonstrated better results in certain cardiovascular and diabetes markers than did those on the low-fat arm.

You know what the problem is: You're depressed, anxious or fatiguedor all three. You know what the solution is: food. You're right, because there's abundant research connecting mood and food. What you eat can have a major impact on how you feeland vice versa.
The High Carb Mood Trap When you're feeling downno matter whychances are your first instinct is to reach for your favorite high carb comfort food. That food may indeed lift your spirits a bit, because eating carbohydrates can increase your level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in depression. In the end, though, the carbs are just a temporary fix that will probably leave you worse off. Why? Because while the pleasure of eating the food may cheer you up, and you may get a slight serotonin increase, those positive effects are far outweighed by the ultimate negative effect of the carbs. All those carbs may give you a brief energy boost, but within a few hours you're likely to experience a big energy crash as your blood sugar takes a sharp swing downward. How will you feel then? Depressed, irritable, tired, unable to concentrateand the cycle starts all over again. |
