Advanced Cell Technology’s (ACT) cell therapy programs are built upon a new class of cells able to form virtually every cell type in the body. This technology platform therefore has unusually broad applications in medicine. These primordial stem cells include Embryonic Stem (ES) cells and other cells from the Inner Cell Mass (ICM) of preimplantation embryos. The biotechnology industry hopes to produce many new therapies from these cells, for instance, neurons for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and spinal cord injury, heart muscle cells for heart failure, cartilage for arthritis, pancreatic cells for diabetes, as well as many others.
As promising as ES cell technology may seem, it does not solve the critical problem of histocompatibility. Human ES cells obtained from embryos derived during in vitro fertilization procedures, or from fetal sources, are essentially cells from another individual (allogeneic). This means that they, or any cells made from them, would be at risk of being rejected if transplanted into a human being. To solve this problem, ACT is performing research on three means to manufacture embryonic cells identical to a human adult, this is to say, autologous embryonic cells.

This is for those who would like to know a bit more about cloning ... you know, CLONING, like what the state of Louisiana has now thrown open the doors to?

Amazing science, even if we disagree over the ethics.

RJ, I would really like to see the sceintists do the research on higher mammalian models, to understand how cell differentiation occurs, then use the understanding to use the patient's own stem cells or cord blood stem cells. I am astonished that the scientists want to jump right to human embryos and cloning human embryos, without fully researching the processes in higher mammalian models. Is it arrogance of scientists at work, greed, or amoral perspective?

So, let's see, you are opposed to
the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and spinal cord injury, ... heart failure, ... arthritis, ... diabetes, and that is what you call
pro-life.
Human-hating is what you ought to call it.

BTW, RJ, I posted the thread to be as neutral on the topic as possible, for information purposes only. I hope we don't end up butting heads ont he ethical merits or lack thereof.

Get your head out of your smelling butt, Hank. You know I'm not opposed to the regeneration of organs and tissues to treat disease. It is the source for these stem cells that concerns me.

Ripping apart and consuming human bodies in order to treat illness - cannibalism is what you ought to call it.

Harvesting babies for body parts is barbaric, so what does this say about you?
People are living because of "Adult" stem cell use, including spinal cord patients. I don't think you know what it means to be "pro-life" I suggest you examine your conscience, Read on:

Ripping apart and consuming human bodies in order to treat illness Well, if this is a temptation for you, I would certainly avoid it.
Are you opposed to "ripping apart" bodies to remove cancer? Are you opposed to blood transfusions? (Blood is considered an organ, so a blood transfusion is essentially taking one person's organ and infusing it in another person's body. This is done intravenously, just like intravenous feeding. I guess you would call the cannibalism.}
But, I know you wouldn't. Long time experience usually overcomes superstitions. The same will be true of cloning.

Harvesting babies for body parts is barbaric, so what does this say about you? So I like veal. If that makes me barbaric, so be it.
I suggest you examine your conscience.
I did. It told me it was none of your business what was in my consciece. My conscience and I are on very good terms. We both love the truth above all things, and neither of us gives a fig for anyone else's opinion. (Speaking just for myself, I am always interested in other's opinions, so thank you for yours.)

To: Hank Kerchief
Hank, you just stepped off the planet by equating removal of cancer from someone's body with the humn vivisection.
Did you intend to do that, or have you simply lost control?

You take surgical or chemical destruction of cells that are threatening the life of the organism, or the transfer of certain cells from one living organism to another with no harm to the donor and enormous benefit to the recipient, and compare it with the deliberate killing of a human organism by effectively flaying it open for the benefit of another person.
I think you get the "Apples and Oranges" award for this month.
