Prayers and advice needed for a FReeper's dad
myself ^ | 7/2/03 | me

Posted on 07/02/2003 6:10:44 AM PDT by Xenalyte

My father Ron (my biodad - not my stepfather, who's been my daddy since I was little) had a "mild" stroke yesterday morning.

My 22-year-old half-brother Grayson is home from college and dealing with it, and since this is the first time this has happened in our family, I'm not sure what to do. I'm going to visit my father this afternoon if I can get time off, and I'm picking up a ham and a turkey breast and some side dishes from Eatzi's or Yapa or similar for Grayson (and maybe some dog food, since my father has two dogs).

Can y'all think of anything else that ought to be done? We just found out that this is his third stroke - Grayson didn't even know that interesting little fact.

I don't want Grayson to have to deal with this himself, so any advice is much appreciated.

Also, if you're the praying type, please send a few his way, and Grayson's. This is a very powerful group, and I've seen what prayer can do.

Many thanks and much love, y'all.

I am honored to pray for you and your Dad. Advise I don't have much of. Maybe you should be sure to tell your Dad that you love him. I wish I could tell my Dad that one more time. I'm praying for his complete recovery and comfort for and wisdom for you.

Friday-morning update: the second MRI came back clean as well. We still have no idea what's up with Dad. His leg cramps are easing a bit.

I'm amazed all over again at the power of FReeper prayer!

Glad things are going well, but we'll keep sending them up at the Slim house.

Prayers will be continued.

Your father is fortunate to have movement and feeling on the affected side. He will be a good candidate for rehabilitation and possibly regain stregnth.

Xena, from your many previous postings, I know you are very intelligent. So I don't presume to tell you what to do but I am going to make some suggestions.

Evidently , the doctor has mentioned that your father has had a stroke. A stroke is another word for a CVA, cerebral vascular accident. There is alot of information regarding this on google. Find out what medicines he will be taking, the rationale for them and the side effects. Be informed.

Have prayed. Will more as Holy Spirit calls to mind.

Sounds like you are doing well in your plans. You can be bold enough to plainly ask each of them what role they would like to see you take; to what degree; in what ways; for how long.

You can asks about whether his affairs are in order; living will or not; financial affairs; medical care etc. Sometimes things are in order and sometimes not but need to be put in order. You can preface all that with an emphasis that you just want to be sure everything is in order regardless of what may happen and that you don't personally care what decisions are made just so the necessary ones are made to minimize problems later.

Then you can just do what seems fitting to take advantage of relationship stuff you'd want to have done should time be limited. Perhaps facilitating a greater relationship with The Lord for each of them.

Anyway--praying.
BLESSINGS TO EACH OF YOU IN HIS PEACE AND LOVE.

Dad update!

He's been moved to a rehab center near his house, and is making great progress. We still don't know what happened - two MRIs, a CAT scan and a spinal tap have turned up nothing - and we're waiting on one blood test to come back from California. They've ruled out a stroke, though, which is excellent news.

He does seem to have developed what sounds to me like Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (which I also have). I'm researching some of his symptoms.

Y'all are seriously the best! My thanks to all of you!

Great to hear about the progress; hope they nail down the cause soon. We should have split our prayers into an Improvent Faction and a Cause Discovery Group.

Praise God for his work in your father, as well as you and your brother. You will never regret one single kindness or one moment of time you spend helping anyone---especially a family memeber--- in their time of need. God bless you for your faithfulness in helping your dad. This can be a tremendous growth experience for all of you even though it doesn't seem that way at the time. May God continue to bring healing to your father and restore him physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

It is sounding like he went through a TIA. (transient ischemic attack)See http://www.stroke-tia.org/ and http://www.postgradmed.com/issues/2002/03_02/pn_tia.htm

for a bit of info. Or, do a google on transient ischemic attack.

It is not as bad as the name sounds. I had a little stroke after my heart attack last year, and I do just fine now. I will continue to pray for him.
