Rush: "Liberals Orgasm Over Web Pipe Dream" (Hot Link to Free Republic from his web site tonight)
Rush Limbaugh Web Site ^ | July 7, 2003 | Rush Limbaugh

Posted on 07/07/2003 7:46:59 PM PDT by Matchett-PI

After 15 years of saying they needed to find a liberal answer to me, the left has decided that they don't need talk radio because they "own" the Internet. Ronald Brownstein of the Los Angeles Times picks up this latest Democrat talking point in a piece headlined: "With Click of a Mouse, Liberals Find Answer to Limbaugh." Whenever one of these ideas germinates in the liberal wing of the party, it's all over the press. Liberals pass on whatever absurd talking point they hear without analyzing whether it's true or not; they don't think for themselves.

Brownstein distorts the tiny Howard Dean showing in the MoveOn.org primary into evidence that most everyone who boots up a computer is a liberal. In the audio links below, you can hear me debunk this absurdity. Remember: last November, Tom Daschle took a shot at me. Years ago, aboard Air Force One, Bill Clinton called KMOX to scream I lacked a "truth detector." Now, liberals are once again trying to create news out of something that's not news. They neglect to mention this very website, or to point out that no matter what the left has, it can't compare with Free Republic [hot link]. MoveOn has already seen their page views fall like a rock.

Howard Dean has raised $3.6 million on the Internet over the last three months from not quite 45,000 donors. Last Monday, Dean collected "a breathtaking" $820,000 online. These people are having orgasms over this! Brownstein quotes Simon Rosenberg, president of the New Democrat Network: "This was an historic week where you had for the first time an unbelievably profound use of the Internet to mobilize regular people to participate in politics again." Historic? It's as if McCain 2000 never happened.

Brownstein gushes over MoveOn generating 200,000 e-mails earlier this year. Do you know how many e-mails Matt Drudge could generate if he chose to? I recounted the kind of crowd we drew for Dan's Bake Sale - [hot link] - at a time when we certainly didn't have the news media talking it up 24 hours a day as they did with this online primary. J.P. Gownder's Washington Post column, "An Online Revolution? I Don't See It," sort of shines the light of reality on this latest leftist fantasy. He cites that more than half of the $7.5 million in campaign cash Dean raised in the second quarter of 2003, came from the Internet, but...

"Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi boasted to a Post reporter, 'We have the largest grassroots organization in America right now and we are going to utilize it.' Sounding a bit like a 1999 vintage dot-com business promoter, Trippi said, 'If television took the grassroots out of politics, the Internet will put it back in.'" Not to put down the Internet - certainly not here - but these people are living in a dream world. Gownder exposes the idea of Dean's online support translating into actual voters by citing the over 55,000 "members" of Dean's MeetUp.com group. The meetings the group has held drew only a few dozen supporters on average. And these guys are throwing a party over this? Dream on!

Let me sum it up for you this way: Brownstein doesn't appear to know that I have one of the most-widely visited websites available dealing with politics and current events. We don't run from technology here, we embrace it. Second, there will always be a large audience for the spoken word, assuming those in positions to speak are cutting-edge, entertaining and, above all, informative. Third, unlike reading a newspaper or a website, talk radio can be heard in cars, in the shower, and places where computer access is difficult. And finally, whether talk radio or websites, the left will never dominate either. The problem for liberals runs deeper than the form of communication. It is the NATURE of their communication. Not only are they humorless, their message is negative and their view of the public is condescending. Liberalism is the ideology of elitists, which, by definition, limits the size of the audience.

Using their list, Dean raised over $800,000 in just over 24 hours. To put that in context, it will take nearly 2 weeks for the FReepathon to garner just $60,000. See, it's no joke.

Lets think about that. Based on their claim of 1.5 million members either each person gave two bucks or a few people gave a lot. I tend to think they used the trick of coordinating mass donations among big wigs in 24 hours to create hype. That is all. I suspect you are looking at something closer to 8000 donators averaging $100. There is a big difference between 8000 and 1.5 million. Plus, how many of those whogave $100 will be giving more?

I don't think it matters one wit either way. I've been eyeing these people for some time and I think they are a worry. It's very early in the primary and this bodes well for the internet faction of the Democrats. Folks like you will continue to insist that it all means nothing but you soon may be wishing you hadn't.

Liberals long for their own Rush. Liberals are making a crusade out of bashing FOXNews, talk radio, and the newly grown conservative media. They got their panties in a collective wad, so now we got Michael Moore, Al Gore, and the DNC going to war against the right, or trying to.

Their latest salvo: Last night I caught Paula Zahn interviewing aging actress Kathleen Turner. (War of the Roses, Romancing the Stone, Body Heat, etc.) Self identified liberal, Ms. Turner will soon have her own talk radio show on PBS. But oh no, never would she try to sell a point of view. Never. She'll have guests on, to answer questions from listeners.

This wouldn't have interested me if I hadn't listened to Drudge on Sunday night interview 2 MIT professors with a new website to expose hypocrisy (and other stuff), on elected officials. I'm sure I'm not the only one to question whether MIT professors would have come up with such a brilliant idea when high and mighty elected officials were democrats.

We can tout FreeRepublic.com, (and Drudge mentioned us on his Sunday show), but we need to stay focused. The messenger isn't nearly as important as the message.

Regarding that Jim R. chart comparing "MoveOn" to FR:
Note that the ordinates are on a log scale;
How much more impressive would it be if it were a linear scale?

We need some free publicity to get more visibility.

Actually, the free publicity route is more effective than an advertising campaign.

Every time there are plans to FReep an event, a series of press releases should be sent to all area major news outlets -- announcing the upcoming event, just prior to the event, and then a news summary about the event. (The "news summary" press releases are especially effective if you include photos; think of such publicity efforts as being your own wire service -- like AP, Reuters, etc. Some outlets will run such articles "as is" and others will hone them.) Include quotes in the releases and contact phone numbers. Sometimes newspapers run them as is; other times reporters use the contact numbers to do follow-up to hone the articles that run. Extremely liberal newspapers may ignore such publicity attempts at first, but once other outlets begin covering such events, they may get on the bandwagon, too.

Well-written letters to the editor can work well, too.

Even if everybody on FR has more money than time, paid ads alone are seldom as effective.

Why do we need to "market" FR through the obsolete paper media?

Why not just write an enraged letter to the editor every so often (and how hard is that?) and mention FR in the letter?

bob j et al.

I sent Jim Rob a note on Sunday night saying that the best statement this site could make is to have a one day internet fund raiser for GWB. I think FR would smash the 800k that the people of meetup.com raised for Dean. Not only that, the amount which we could raise on the site would generate free advertising via media coverage, and would draw more conservatives into the fold.

Granted, it would need a good 90-100 day head start and advertise it on the site. I think if you did this the entire community would be ready to donate on that date, and FR would smash all previous online fund raising records.

Just a thought as we get closer to 2004!

saying they needed to find a liberal answer to me, the left has decided that they don't need talk radio because they "own" the Internet

No they don't. First, to use the internet you have to be able to read and comprehend.
Second, it's hard to drum up that emotional response that gets the liberals crying "The sky is falling!".
Third, how can people who can't afford food, housing, medical care, and clothing afford internet access?
No. We own the net.
