ABC: BUSH-CHENEY RE-ELECT NEW (Listing of Donors)
ABC's The NOTE ^ | July 11, 2003 | The NOTE

Posted on 07/11/2003 9:14:24 AM PDT by PhiKapMom

ABC 2004: Bush-Cheney re-elect:

Nicolle Devenish, the spokesperson of the Bush-Cheney campaign, tells The Note that on Tuesday the 15th, Bush-Cheney will put up two categories of data on its web site: all the FEC-required stuff, plus more more more.

The campaign plans to post just under 20,000 donors who gave $200 or more, with close to 80% of those donors having complete information (occupation/address/etc.) listed, and the campaign is working all weekend trying to get higher compliance, which is admirable on at least two levels.

In addition, the campaign will put up all the donors who gave less than $200, and there will be about 80,000 of those (and, remember, that listing those donors is NOT required by the FEC), and the campaign will get to about 80% of those listed in that category with full information, which is extraordinary.

There will be no listing for Rangers and Pioneers yet, although some donors have amazingly hit Pioneer status already.

Now, are presidential campaigns exclusively the domain of white men?

The Wall Street Journal 's Jackie Calmes writes in Washington Wire that some female political pros are complaining about the lack of women in the upper echelons of the Dems' camps in light of the July 4 Kerry Summit. "'Women have a couple of folding chairs — they don't have real seats at the table,' said former Gore 2000 manager Donna Brazile."

But the, uhm, men running for office beg to differ. The Kerry campaign Notes that three key women in its campaign, "a senior strategist, policy director and scheduler — were at retreat." Lieberman employs women as vice chair, deputy campaign manager and national field director, and women are the political, research and finance directors of Edwards' campaign, Calmes reports.

All well and good, but check out what Ms. Devenish Noted to The Note:

"No lack of female power and influence at the Bush campaign … communications director Nicolle Devenish, deputy to the campaign manager for operations, Kelley McCullough, Director of VP operations, Mary Cheney, Deputy to the chief strategist, Sara Taylor, and White House Liaison to the campaign Susan Ralston, all have permanent seats at the table (not folding chairs) for the daily senior staff meeting. Mary Matalin and Karen Hughes will also advise the campaign. Bush-Cheney '04 is 31 women strong and growing," and that is out of 65 employees overall. (You do the math to figure out how many are men.)

Regarding campaign manager Ken Mehlman, Devenish says: "he feels 'outnumbered' (but) he's very proud of the team that he has put together."

I remember during the attempted theft in Florida in 2000, Bush-Cheney listed ALL donors from $1.00 on up.

The Gore campaign refused to list ANYONE. Not that it matters with regard to this post, but it made me remember.

I'm not ashamed to give to Bush, but I really think that this information should be kept private. First, the FEC lists names and addresses of all donors, even if those donors aren't listed! So if you give over $200 to any political candidate once, everyone knows your address. They also know your job and where you work. And you can search by company, so the CEO can see if there are any Dems or Republicans or pro-lifers or pro-choicers at the company. I guess campaign finance reform is the opposite of privacy.

It does matter because now it alerts us to be on the look-out to see what the DemocRATs do in this election. Thanks for the reminder! I had forgotten about that!

Any ChiCOM contributors or major contributions from companies who are against a more combative stance toward the PRC? Don't have time myself to look at the site but if anyone else has this would be good info to deal with now and to use it to influence Bush prior to the election to steer clear of it.

There goes my 199 dollar check to the campaign. This is an incredibly stupid move on their part. I work very hard to keep my personal information out of the pulbic domain. I am not going to simply send them a check so they can post my home address and employer on the internet.

Also, it's not a very big deal for me, but a lot of people won't give knowing that their co-workers can look up their political contributions.

Whoever thought of this is an outright idiot and should be fired immediately.

You are right! Anything over $200 contains all information which is open to public!

Must admit that I have been to Open Secrets a time or two checking out who is donating to RATs when that person appears as a non-partisan on cable news or in print stories.

I admit to checking out my husband's employer... the top executives of the corporation. They are based in Houston, so I wasn't surprised to see they donated to Bush.

I do have a question...

Isn't it still the "small donors" giving five, ten, twenty, fifty dollars that actually help drive a campaign? I have always been under the impression that any amount given is greatly appreciated, and that each and every dollar is extremely important. If the small donors stop, the Republicans can't win. Am I correct?

Thanks for making that point about small donors!

The small donors are the backbone of the Bush-Cheney Campaign and were that in 2000 and during the Florida fiasco! Without the small donors, they would not raise even close to the amount of money they need.

Bush-Cheney campaigns rely heavily on the Grassroots with their donations and hours of volunteer time -- they cannot afford to pay all the thousands of volunteers that donate countless hours to the campaign.

If a million people sent in $1 that would add up to a million dollars in campaign contributions. Every dollar counts in a campaign whether it be at the national or local level!

This pleases me greatly... it is good to hear that Aunt Myrtle's money from the cookie jar is so very important to the Bush/Cheney campaign! This is a good example of the "little people" having their voices heard in Washington. Reminds me of the fact that the WH is the "People's House".

After the campaign, the info is available from the FEC. FOI Act requires it. If you've given before, it's a matter of public record. Bush is just making it easier to get to the information. It's not consequential.

If that's true, then that's ok. Except, I give 199 to campaigns all the time and yet I am not in the FEC online databases.

So, I don't mind if someone can go down to the FEC and look me up, but the internet thing bothers me.

It is consequential to those who want to keep their lives private. Some folks go to great lengths to remain anonymous by paying for unlisted phone numbers and filling out all the paperwork to keep credit reports unavailable to unauthorized parties. Having a name and address readily available via a political contribution website discourages donations from these people.

Oh well. I suppose military members don't donate often to political candidates.
