A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

The Lighthouse at
Old Presque Isle, MI

A year or so ago, .45MAN and I happened to catch a series on PBS highlighting various lighthouses around the United States. The most fascinating, to me, was the vignette about the lighthouse at Old Presque Isle, MI. The following story tells why.

From: "Haunted? You Decide!":

Keeper George Parris and his wife, Lorraine, moved into the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse and Museum in 1977. The lighthouse had been built in 1840. In 1870 the lighthouse was decommissioned when the taller New Presque Isle Lighthouse was built. The old lighthouse suffered from neglect until the Stebbins family bought it from the U.S. government in the early 1900s. The family rebuilt the keeper's dwelling and used it as a summer home. They opened the restored keeper's dwelling and lighthouse to tourists. After their children were grown, the Stebbins family decided to give the property to the tourists. George and Lorraine became the caretakers, moving into the keeper's dwelling in mid-May.

George enjoyed the visitors to the lighthouse, especially the children. He enjoyed taking the visitors to the lighthouse on a tour of the buildings and grounds and telling them about the hard life and heroic deeds of the Keepers and their families. He also enjoyed playing harmless pranks on the light station visitors - the grownups as well as the children - by giving them a "muscle test" with the foghorn. The blast of the foghorn invariably knocked the visitors off their feet! In spite of his tricks, the visitors loved George and would return year after year to visit the lighthouse and to see what new tricks he had decided to play on them.

On January 2, 1992, George died of a massive heart attack. The following May, Lorraine didn't want to go back to the cottage alone, but her kids talked her into it. One evening when Lorraine was driving along Grand Lake Road on her way back to the light station, she felt her eyes drawn to the tower - and to her utter amazement she saw a light shining in the lantern room! Lorraine knew that this was impossible as George had disconnected the electricity to the tower so the light wouldn't accidentally be turned on. The Coast Guard said it was illegal to display a light in the tower as mariners might confuse it with the New Presque Lighthouse. To be doubly certain that no accidental lighting would occur, the Coast Guard had removed the gears so the lens could no longer rotate.

4th Order Fresnel Lens

As Lorraine approached the house, she could no longer see the light. The next day she climbed to the tower to reassure herself that someone had not reconnected the power lines and restored the gears. The lantern room was empty.

Lorraine didn't say anything to anybody about what she had seen as she didn't want to be ridiculed ... but she continued to see the light whenever she drove along the stretch of Grand Lake Road that looks out over Presque Isle Harbor.

Soon people began reporting the light in the old tower. The light appeared to have a yellowish cast, as if from an old oil lamp. National Guard pilots reported seeing it when they flew night missions over the peninsula. The Coast Guard being taking notice of it too!

On July 4, 1992, a little girl reported seeing a man at the top of the stairs leading to the lantern room. The little girl described a tall man with snow-white hair and a beard, and wearing glasses. When shown a picture of George, she said it was the man in the tower but he had been "brighter white" when she saw him than he was in the pictures. This child had never met George when he was alive.

These are but a few of the strange happenings at Old Presque Isle Lighthouse. People have reported that George's light had guided them safely to shore on dark, stormy, foggy nights. People have reported playful pranks by unseen hands while visiting the lighthouse. To this day, the light still comes on at dusk and goes off at daylight. The U.S. Coast Guard has classified it as an "unidentified" light.

There isn't much more I can add to that touching story other than to say it is truly a legend that speaks of love and devotion. The light still mysteriously shines to this day as George sends his undying love to his beloved wife Lorraine and the lighthouse that brightened up his life.

Enjoy!

No, I doubt it. The Dallas Morning News has this on their website right now ...

Some folks are hot year-round

08/06/2003

By KIMBERLY DURNAN / Dallas Web Staff

Sure, you might be hot right now, but some folks are hot year-round.

Take Kim Hott of Keller, who has elected to keep the name despite a recent divorce and the frequently tiresome “Are you as hot as it is outside?” jokes.

“I will stay Hott because I have three boys,” she said, adding that even a new husband would not force her to part with her Hottness. “I’ll be Hott – slash – whatever.”

It was really hot/whatever Wednesday, as temperatures soared to 108 degrees by 6 p.m. at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. It was the hottest day on record since it hit 105 degrees on Sept. 4, 2000, said WFAA-TV meteorologist Steve McCauley.

The forecast calls for triple-digit temperatures continuing though Saturday.

So it’s probably good to have a sense of humor about the heat. Ms. Hott says her ex-father-in-law, Chilton, is known as “Chilly Hott.” Dallas stylist Rodd Gray decided to use the word to his advantage, calling himself Hott Rodd the Hair Godd.

“I have fun with it,” Gray says.

The name draws plenty of clients, who are encouraged to follow Gray’s own version of the 10 Commandments posted in his salon. Among them: “Thou shall not use any other hair gods before me,” and “Thou shall not cut thy own bangs.”

Eunsun Hwang, owner of Hot Donuts and Bakery, insists that in the doughnut world, hot is a good thing, even during the brutal days of summer. “Hot means fresh. It means just made,” she said.

Similarly, heat is the lifeblood of Hot Sauce Harry’s in Dallas, a company that produces a line of hot pepper sauces and other products.

Dianne and Bob Harris are the co-owners. “We didn’t think Hot Sauce Bob or Hot Sauce Dianne sounded that good,” Mrs. Harris explained.

Mrs. Harris suggested that now was a good time to eat hot sauce, especially when it caused beads of perspiration to break out on your forehead.

“If you eat hot foods it will cool you down,” Mrs. Harris said. “When you sweat that’s the body’s mechanism to cool you off.”

OK, Dianne, if you say so.

But there might be better ways to cool off, like visiting the Cool Breeze Motel in Irving.

Unfortunately, Pavita Patel, who was answering phones Wednesday morning, expected it to be as uncomfortable at the motel in the afternoon as it was everywhere else.

Asked whether the “Cool Breeze” in the motel’s name attracted customers during the summer, she said, “Yeah, I don’t think so.”

So much for cool breezes.

At Cool Agent Inc., President Scott Wilson said the name was meant to highlight the company’s technology, which gives computer users the tools to view video with more clarity.

“I’m personally not a cool agent,” Wilson acknowledged cheerfully. “We have some cool technology that can be enjoyed indoors in the climate-controlled atmosphere. You will think it is cool.”

Rick Rosen, who calls himself the Cool Pool Man, said he chose the moniker because it’s catchy.

“I thought it would kind of describe myself in that I don’t try to take advantage of people -- I’m cool,” he said. “I picked the name cool because it sounds friendly. It was not temperature-related but behavior-related.”

Psalms Chapter 145

1 Praise. Of David. I will extol you, my God and king; I will bless your name forever.
2 Every day I will bless you; I will praise your name forever.
3 Great is the LORD and worthy of high praise; God's grandeur is beyond understanding.
4 One generation praises your deeds to the next and proclaims your mighty works.
5 They speak of the splendor of your majestic glory, tell of your wonderful deeds.
6 They speak of your fearsome power and attest to your great deeds.
7 They publish the renown of your abounding goodness and joyfully sing of your justice.
8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love.
9 The LORD is good to all, compassionate to every creature.
10 All your works give you thanks, O LORD and your faithful bless you.
11 They speak of the glory of your reign and tell of your great works,
12 Making known to all your power, the glorious splendor of your rule.
13 Your reign is a reign for all ages, your dominion for all generations. The LORD is trustworthy in every word, and faithful in every work.
14 The LORD supports all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look hopefully to you; you give them their food in due season.
16 You open wide your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 You, LORD, are just in all your ways, faithful in all your works.
18 You, LORD, are near to all who call upon you, to all who call upon you in truth.
19 You satisfy the desire of those who fear you; you hear their cry and save them.
20 You, LORD, watch over all who love you, but all the wicked you destroy.
21 My mouth will speak your praises, LORD; all flesh will bless your holy name

Goodnight to all of my FReeper FRiends. Thank you for stopping by today. Have a wonderful and blessed evening!

Have an update for you, Dub.
Going to the VA for an appointment yesterday, a fellow approached the Clinic window, plunked down his two prescription bottles, and asked the clerk how to get his civilian prescriptions filled at VA, considering the new coverage I had described here.

If you are in the VA Medical System, you must obtain from your civilian physician a written prescription - not as he presented, merely the bottles, even having available refills.

The VA Pharmacy must have on file the valid written prescription in order to fill it.

For once, they really came through promptly with what was published!
