Four years after the end of the Civil War, America focused on reconstruction and a new passion. On November 6th, 1869, college football emerged. The teams were Princeton and Rutgers. The final score looked more like a baseball score than today's football scores. (Rutgers beat Princeton 6 to 4.)

Flash forward 134 years and you will begin to understand that college football has become an important Fall rite of passage to many in this country. It has truly been a love that has been passed down through the generations. Please join us today as we preview the upcoming season. If you have any favorite college football teams, stories, or traditions that you would like to share with us. Please do so on the thread.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL 101
by MoJo

If you are bored on Saturday's during the Fall, let me walk you through a crash course on College Football. So? Class is in session. Sit up and take notes.

Myth: College football is boring compared to the NFL.
MoJo's take: If you are an NFL fan, you would think this. If you love football, does it really matter which game is on. After all, we've had to endure the entire summer of baseball. Now that is a snoring sport.

Myth: College football fans are obsessive.

MoJo's take: Compared to this guy below? Hello?

Myth: College football is all about money.
MoJo's take: Well so is the NFL. However, college football players are not eligible for payment until after they've declared it to the NCAA.

Myth: There are no babes in college football.

MoJo's take: Well, it isn't professional. Visit any school campus and you'll find plenty of babes there rooting for their school.

Myth: There are no good rivalries!
MoJo's take: Click here to read a story about it. Also, college rivalries are longer, fiercer, and as hateful as any in the sports world. Not that we are condoning this type of behavior. However, college rivalries make the game that much better to watch. Even if you don't care who wins.

__________________________________

How to spot a college football fan.

1. College football fans tend to wear the jerseys, tattoo's, logos, and anything on their body that will help themselves be identified.

2. Yes! Hating your opposing school--especially the big rival--is a must. If you speak to someone who is that addictive, don't be surprised to hear them refer to the state or the school as "we played them on such and such date" or "we kicked their butt on such and such date" or, "we will kick their butt next year".

3. Tailgating is a must. It's the experience not just the game. After all, the rest of the world may hate us but these fans don't care. Their school rivals or next opponent is hated more than the French. (Where else could this be more important?)

4. Vacations are taken from September to January to places where their favorite college team is played. And no events (weddings included) will be scheduled on any Saturday. If you want to see them, try Tuesday and Wednesday throughout the season.

5. No! They don't believe they are obsessed or in need of professional help. Their health will vary from good or bad due to how well their team is playing. If it's bad in the first week, please keep in mind that it will only get worse throughout the season.

6. If the game is that important, preparation will be made well ahead of time. Most times it is done the year before. After all, it's a lifestyle.

7. Friendships are nice, but not during college football season. Friendships may resume the day after the BCS games are over.

8. Family members usually refer to "blood is thicker than water". However, football season changes this. MoJo has an aunt that teaches at Auburn and an uncle that teaches at Alabama. They don't speak about football until both are out of the bowl games. That's how it is. Keep that in mind when crossing the path of one of these college football fans.

9. Of course there are more important things in the world. There are the up to the minute stats on next week's opponent and the BCS rankings that come out every Monday night during Monday Night Football. That's important! Don't ever interrupt during halftime of Monday Night football. That's a no-no!

10. Don't be surprised to meet people who've fallen in love, gotten engaged, or married at these games.

11. Drama in college football is best defined when the refs screw your team over. That's drama! Drama is not tedious issues like paying mortgages or babysitters. So? Don't stress out about those little details to college football fans. They don't care.

12. Everyone hates Notre Dame. (Except Notre Dame fans!) Oh! And they cheat. Just ask any other college football fan and they will usually agree with you.

13. College Gameday on Saturday mornings is a must. Cartoons can be previewed in the other rooms of the house. Oh! Lee Corso picking your school to win is the kiss of death. Always root for him to choose the opposing school. (If he's visiting the school with the College Gameday crew, he'll usually pick the home school. Which is okay for that Saturday!)

14. If you are a woman, go shopping on Saturdays. Your husband will be of little use on these days. Unless of course he loves football in general, then shop the whole weekend. He'll be too busy.

15. If you are a man and don't understand your wife's passion for college football, avoid asking her for anything on Saturdays.

16. Meals at a house are eaten in this order. Pre-Game, halftime, and after the game. If you are hungry at any other point, grab a cracker. If it goes into overtime, call Grandma or Ma for help.

17. Yes! College football fans have countdown counters on their computers indicating the time until college football season resumes. So? If you don't want to be hated, avoid screwing up that counter.

18. If you watch college football and see an opposing schools jersey in the crowd of the home team fans, please pray for that fan's safety. They may not get out alive. (Also, they are morons for not planning better!)

19. Yes! Losing to your rival school ruins the entire year. You have all year to wish horrible things on that school. When it happens, there is usually no guilt or unhappiness because of it.

20. Marriages survive better in the Fall when the couple are cheering for schools from the other conferences. MoJo's hubby roots for Texas. MoJo for Ohio State. So? There is no conflict there. We also root against the rivals of both schools. No Okies or the "school up north" (Michigan) fans in MoJo's house.

21. Of course the other school is stupid.

22. Of course the other school has an idiot for a coach.

23. Florida State is referred to, by many college football fans,  as Free Shoes University. It goes back to an incident involving Foot Locker. Ask any non-FSU fan to tell you about it.

24. The Florida-Georgia game is referred to as the "Largest Cocktail Party". So? If you are quizzed about it, you are officially in the know.

25. Trev Alberts, ESPN college football analyst, is an idiot. Just ask any school he thought "sucked" last year. They all finished in the Top 5 last. (He did pick Miami to win the championship.)

26. If you hear this statement, you will know you are in the presence of an avid college football fan.
"Before I die, I hope that my team beats (fill in the blank).

27. Yes! God does have favorites on Saturdays. Just ask any losing teams fan on Saturday night and they'll tell you that God has lost favor with their school for that day.

28. Bickering between conferences is not a new thing. At the end of the regular season, most schools unite in their one common goal. Being the best football conference in the Nation.

29. You always root for any team that plays against Notre Dame. Unless it's the hated school rival. You'll have to decide whom you hate more.

30. Thanksgiving and Christmas are national holidays. They are also busy weeks for college football. Most of the big rivalry games play the weekend before and after Thanksgiving. Bowl season officially begins the week of Christmas. (Sometimes a few days before.)

31. Your school always has the best band. The other band is filled with amateur wannabes. Not the case with your school's band.

32. Same concept as the above. Your school mascot is the best. The other school mascot is a moving target. The cheerleaders are always better looking with your school's name on their uniform. Of course, your stadium is definitely better. Everyone else is envious, right?

33. Well, maybe your school wasn't so great this year on the field. But remember when they were? Keep an ear out for the rehashing of the college football fans greatest memories of years past. You will know that the current season is merely an evaluation of how great they will be next year.

34. Every other school has drug addicts and thugs playing on their team. Not your school! Your school has angels playing and any mama would be proud to feed them.

35. Yes! All the Refs on the field do need glasses. It isn't your teams fault if they didn't score. It was definitely the Refs fault. Blaming the Ref is the only way to explain bad play calling.

36. I may be a Buckeye fan, but what the heck is a Hokie? That's right. Your school nickname is horrible compared to mine. Be on the lookout for those type of conversations. Then you'll know ,truly know, that college football is just an excuse to complain.

Now! Can you spot a college football fan?

Oh!! Next week we will delve into the NFL PREVIEW. Please add your comments to the thread. And we leave you with these. Please click on each! Also, if you can't find your school. Please click here for all school fight songs. Some of the links provided below are not the actual school fight song. We did try and load as many as we possibly could. Enjoy!

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

Feeble attempt at humor for the lurking troops:

Honoring a former president

Manufacturers announced today that they will be stocking America's
shelves this week with "Clinton Soup," in honor one of the nation's
most distinguished men. It consists primarily of a weenie in hot
water.

Chrysler Corporation is adding a new car to its line to honor Bill
Clinton: The Dodge Drafter will begin production in Canada this year.
They were going to release it a few years back, but they couldn't keep
it from vacuuming up the white lines in the middle of the road.

When Clinton was asked what he thought about foreign affairs, he
replied: "I don't know, I never had one."

American Indians have nicknamed Bill Clinton "Walking Eagle" because
he is so full of crap he can't fly.

Clinton lacked only three things to have become one of America's
finest leaders: integrity, vision, and wisdom.

Clinton was doing the work of three men: Moe, Larry & Curly.

Revised judicial oath:
"I solemnly swear to tell the truth as I know it, the whole truth as
I believe it to be, and nothing but what I think you need to know."

You know, politicians and diapers have one thing in common. Both
should be changed regularly, and for the same reason!
