(Val) Kilmer comments rankle N.M. lawmaker (about needing to carry gun)

PECOS, N.M. (AP) -- Actor Val Kilmer has been talking about New Mexico, and one state lawmaker didn't like what he heard.

Kilmer, who has a ranch in the mountains south of Pecos, was asked about living in rural New Mexico in an interview published in a recent edition of Rolling Stone.

Kilmer told the magazine he carries a gun in his car.

"I live in the homicide capital of the Southwest," Kilmer said. "Eighty percent of the people in my county are drunk. So driving home on the highway, especially with kids, it's (carrying a gun) just a precaution."

Kilmer was also asked how he spends his time. After talking about feeding the animals and going to the watering hole, he put on a hick accent and said: "We shoot the automatic weapons at the trespassers and people a different color than us."

State Sen. Phil Griego, whose district includes Kilmer's ranch and who lives nearby, said Friday that if the actor doesn't like San Miguel County he's welcome to leave.

"He's shooting from the hip and he's espousing stuff he really doesn't know anything about," Griego said.

The lawmaker said the actor lives behind a gate and doesn't know his community.

A call to Kilmer's agent requesting an explanation of the actor's remarks was not returned.

John Hendry of the state tourism department said Kilmer actually loves New Mexico and its people.

"I don't believe for a minute he meant any of it. I know him and I have a feeling that you had to be there" to understand Kilmer's perhaps sardonic intent, Hendry said.

One of my favorite movies from my childhood, but I would have to say my favorite Val Kilmer movie was "Top Secret"

LOL............Ski down ride up and stop and fix the youngins bindings. Gotta be smart these days Dad. Them kiddies will run ya ragged if ya don't. My risk ski trip was out the door of a helo and down to a crash site in Alaska with a 40 pound ruck. Different game when your black diamonds are not present.......

If I could do my life over again I'd try the ski bum instructor thang in the winter.....white water rafting guide in the spring , crew on blue water cruisers in the summer and guide elk & mulie hunts in the fall.

BTW I have been over Engineer Pass many a time from Lake City. My favorite trip.....You did that in a Honda civic ???? You Da Man !

Stay Safe !

I can believe that but I'd put submarine extraction as the hairiest thing I've ever heard anyone do on purpose.....outside marrying my ex-wife/shrew.

I spent most of my life post 1980 in the tropics/jungle/ocean except for Andes stuff.

Of course now, that all seems like a life ago. Adventure for me is watching beach babes on the beach at Destin or driving 100 plus when my wife is asleep.

I'm even getting too old to fight...the bursitis in my right elbow is about ready for some more cortisone..I'm serious...holding a Walker Colt steady with my right arm when it's bad is shaky..damn this sucks. I gotta stay off these nostalgia threads or nut up and do something. Bill Buckley circumnavigated with his buddies in his late 60s on a Swan 51 I think didn't he?...there may be hope yet. I have a 45 year old pal just getting his pilots license....he is buying a used Bonanza...I think I'll take out a policy on him.

I'd like a Ducati but my wife would kill me and my banks and life insurers would shite!

...well, there's always deer hunting...there is a zen to that and raising toddler boys is not exactly uneventful.

"I live in the homicide capital of the Southwest," Kilmer said.

Um... No... You work in the homicide capital of the Southwest, Val. Remember? ...the place where we mere mortals aren't allowed to carry concealed weapons... Is it coming back to you now?

I had already turned in my equipment and was waiting on them. The lift wouldn't let me ride up feet only. Another skier came down and asked if I had two young girls with me and explained to me that they were panicked and sitting it out two lifts up so I started trudging up the slope...all 1.5 miles and 1800 vertical of it in my Georgia boots...I bet I sweated off 10 pounds....I looked like Sasquatch by the time I found them. Ski Patrol kept stopping and telling me I had to get off the slope. I glared at them and they left me alone...lol

When I got there about ready for the defribrillators, the girls were just sitting on their butts weeping. I jury rigged the binding and told her to plow down to the bottom....I tried to slide on my ass most of the way down. After my heart rate got back down to the south side of 200, I felt pretty good and the girls were reassured that "not the mommy" had come to fetch them as was expected. That was one of those, it might kill me but I have no choice moves.

I also camped up there above the Animas creek on a summit and drank sheep feces infected water and got sick as a dog. I used to love the San Juans.

Funny Story......not the mommy...........LMAO !!!!

I had to do a short sprint back to my truck once up on top of Pikes Peak. I thought it was the big one . My chest clamped down on my ticker and scared me to death. God was telling me to pull my head out before I kilt myself from lack of Oxygen. Altitude will humble you quick even when your in shape.

Ever fly fish the Quality Waters below the Navajo Dam on the San Juan ? Great fishing ...right near the old church parking lot !

Wheeling, Flyfishing, hunting and sking in NM & CO region was the best ! Too bad they are going Meheca/Azatlan Socialist way........

Stay Safe !

One of the most underrated lines in a movie...Arnold gets "I'll be back" quoted, but Kilmer's line is one of my favorites.

Stands up to William Shatner's overacting and screaming "Khaaaaaaaaaaaan" in ST2:The Wrath of Khan.

A google search under Tierra Amirilla Courthouse Raid proved useful. The top link is for Forest Guardians, our local chapter of ELF. They see themselves as the natural allies of the land grant families. I think the land grant folks view them as "useful idiots."

If I make any real money, I'm going to have a 60' cat built. Then we can schedule some no-stress ocean time. Just flat sailing.

Too bad they are going Meheca/Azatlan Socialist way

Yeah...but they are gonna have to hold onto it aren't they? (grin)

Altitude is a strong humbler. I have been gasping with my heart galloping and look over and some leathered up old Indian woman with a Bowler Hat and a Ruana (poncho) is walking up hill with a 60 pound sack of homemade charcoal on her back and a big fat handrolled stogie in her mouth and cheeks full of coca and acting like she could care less that the air is about 50% less oxygenated than at sea level.

Life is not fair in unexpected ways. It used to take me weeks to get really used to say 9K or above....and I would drop weight bigtime due to cardiopulmonary extra compensation. I have read that tall folks are more affected by altitude. I saw my dad get all goofy at Pikes Peak once as a kid and he flat passed out on his face at Mt Lemon in Arizona when I was a wee one and he was in USAF FS there.

Not a condo-cat though. If I get a multihull, it's going to look like a racer on the outside. At least 12-1 length-beam ratio, and the bare minimum bridge deck. So even though it would be long, it would be very lean in the hulls, and hence not so elaborate or expensive to build. Probably not much more room inside than my present steel boat, but 2-3 times faster.

1993: Yellow Pages, custom multihull, sets Outright Sailing Speed Record at 46.52 knots.

I realize not exactly what you had in mind but even the racing circumnavigating multis can average around 20 knots on a well run leg. THAT IS MOVING!...over 500 staute miles a day...whew. Mo-Bay to St Pete in 48 hours...lol

This is interesting. Three part article about the "Crypto Jews" of Northern NM, who went underground in the 1500's to avoid the inquisition. In light of the amazing anti-senitism of the Atzlan websites, this could provide an interesting hook. They also mention a intellectual movement called "La Raza Cosmica" that started up in Mexico in the 1920's. Just gets twistier and twistier.

You gonna give all the FReepers a ride on your boat if you become a world famous author? :-)

Wow, that story on the "King Tiger" and the Courthouse Raid is pretty damned amazing! Click Here!

Scroll down under the picture to read the story. Amazing! Lefty, but amazing! My next book "Domestic Enemies" is going to be very complex, with good and bad guys on both sides of the enthnic civil war.
