Amen, Deacon!

Is this the Dr. Edwin P. Elliot from "The Christian Observer," the official journal of the Bible Presbyterian Church in Manassas, VA?

I pray that we work together ever more closely, with ever more conviction, in the public square, against the issues that bind us to Christ in opposition to Satan:

abortion, euthanasia, cloning, stem cell research, homosexual marriage

Just a clarification, is that a TOTAL prohibition, or merely a prohibition on EMBRIONIC stem cell research? If Embrionic, i am in agreement.

A goal that we share, by His Word, for His glory.

"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." -- John 16:33.

Indeed, it is the Dr. Elliott from Manassas, although I do not believe he represents his publication as serving only the Bible Presbyterian denomination. Indeed, I am not entirely certain as to his congregation's current denominational affiliation.

And the final Jeopardy question is name infamous Dominican monk said:

Don't you hear the voices of your wailing dead parents and others who say, 'Have mercy upon me, have mercy upon me, because we are in severe punishment and pain. From this you could redeem us with a small alms and yet you do not want to do so.' Open your ears as the father says to the son and the mother to the daughter . . ., 'We have created you, fed you, cared for you, and left you our temporal goods. Why then are you so cruel and harsh that you do not want to save us, though it only takes a little? You let us lie in flames so that we only slowly come to the promised glory.' You may have letters which let you have, once in life and in the hour of death . . . full remission of the punishment which belongs to sin. Oh, those of you with vows, you usurers, robbers, murderers, and criminals - Now is the time to hear the voice of God. He does not want the death of the sinner, but that he be converted and live. Convert yourselves the, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, to the Lord, thy God. Oh, you blasphemers, gossippers, who hinder this work openly or secretly, what about your affairs? You are outside the fellowship of the Church. No masses, no sermons, prayers, sacraments, or intercession help you. No field, vineyard, trees, or cattle bring fruit or wine for you. Even spiritual things vanish, as many an illustration could point out. Convert yourself with all you heart and use the medicine of which the Book of Wisdom says, 'The Most High has made medicine out of the earth and a wise man will not reject it.'

All Saint's Day is November 1. Many pilgrims were in Wittenberg for that festival. The church door was the community bulletin board, and a good place to post notices for future debate. From my reading, the year before he had preached a critical sermon on All Saint's Day, and I suppose people were interested in what might be forthcoming. So I would say he took advantage of the holiday.

Of course that would be Johann Tetzel.

Had the scapular been invented then? I can't but think he'd've loved that. Just think: a garment that GUARANTEES that merely by wearing it, one is saved from Hell's fires.

The spirit of Tetzel lives.

Just think: a garment that GUARANTEES that merely by wearing it, one is saved from Hell's fires.

Good luck finding anything that says that merely (notice the word: you used it, I didn't) by wearing a scapular, anyone can get to heaven ... as though an unrepentent sinner could waltz into heaven by virtue of a piece of cloth around his neck.

A scapular no more guarantees a Catholic heaven than reciting the sinner's prayer guarantees a Protestant heaven.

You still have to lead a Christian life.

Don't believe everything you read on James White's website.

Ever Google the scapular? It's hardly a mystery.

"WHOSOEVER DIES WEARING THIS SCAPULAR SHALL NOT SUFFER ETERNAL FIRE. IT SHALL BE A SIGN OF PEACE AND A SAFEGUARD IN TIMES OF DANGER."

All Saints Day, a pre-exsiting Catholic holiday on ar about Oct. 31st, coincided nicely.

All Saints is 1st November, is was also known as All Hallows (which means pretty much the same thing); All Hallows Even was abreviated to Hallowe'en. Thus stuff about ghouls was that this was the last time that they could play around before the Holy Day following.

I couldn't resist a certain wry smile at Reformation Day being on Hallowe'en...

Even better traditionalist Catholics kept yesterday as the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King which is certainly preferable to Hallowe'en.
