Prayer for the Election of a Pope - Lord God, you are our eternal shepherd and guide. In your mercy grant your Church a shepherd who will walk in your ways and whose watchful care will bring us your blessing. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Collect, Mass for the Election of a Pope, Roman Missal)

Contents
Veni, Sancte Spiritus
Come, Holy Spirit
Spiritus

A traditional prayer asking for the grace of the Holy Spirit. It has been used for centuries as a prayer of private devotion. The texts appear in the propers for the Mass and Divine Office for the feast of Pentecost, and also in the votive Mass of the Holy Spirit. The first part, which has a partial indulgence attached to it, is the antiphon for the Magnificat for Pentecost. The veriscle and response are associated with the readings for the feast. Lastly, the collect is found in the votive Mass.

VENI, Sancte Spiritus, reple tuorum corda fidelium, et tui amoris in eis ignem accende. COME, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and kindle in them the fire of Thy love.
V. Emitte Spiritum tuum et creabuntur;
R. Et renovabis faciem terrae.
V. Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created
R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth. Amen.
Oremus:
DEUS, qui corda fidelium Sancti Spiritus illustratione docuisti: da nobis in eodem Spiritu recta sapere, et de eius semper consolatione gaudere. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.
Let us pray:
O GOD, Who taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that, by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be always truly wise, and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thanks for your hard work and this thread. I have purposely stopped watching the news, articles, etc. on this issue once it was apparant that most was misinformation, derrogatory comments and snide remarks made by the media and critics of the church's process - a process that they do not understand, nor respect.

I have been praying that the Cardinals are filled with the Holy Spirit from the moment they convene and He directs them each time they cast their votes. I will continue to pray that they are open to His guidance. I can only have faith now that their selection will be made with purity of soul and a heart filled with deep love for the good of the Church and not be a selection that is influenced only by personal desires.

Salvation, thank you for this thread. Not only are the media making stupid and snide comments like this is a political election, smears on certain cardinals are now surfacing in an attempt to influence the conclave. Today I hard aspersions that Ratzinger was a member of the Nazi party and a South American cardinal (from Argentina) was involved in some sort of shady dealings.

Of course, not a word about Mahoney of Los Angeles.

I will check in from time to time here. As you know, I am not Catholic but am very interested in the workings of the Church. Thank you so much for all the information you have posted on this thread.

Well, Chris Wallace has called Cardinal Ratzinger the Vatican's "enforcer," and the priest who is with him said that that is not what he does and the word shouldn't be used, as it carries with it a stigma that is unfair, particularly concerning the difficult job Cardinal Ratzinger has had over the last 20 years.

I think I will go back to EWTN. I don't think Wallace is the propert person to cover this, as he obviously is going to cover it as a political event.

Any one in the MSM will treat it as a political election. There isn't much you can say or do about it. FOX News seems to be pretty good about letting this Mass play out on its own without a bunch of chatter on top, unlike CNN which seems to have a bunch of commentary on top of the Mass.

I don't want to intrude on the thread with a kind of tasteless subject but it's for the good, so if anyone can send me to some info to refute a rather insistent claim about John Paul I's death after a month in office, please post here or, if it's too sensitive a topic, private mail me. Someone I know has been annoying me with easily-refuted bunk from DaVinci code, but I was looking for someone who specifically refuted rumors of the first JP's death. Thank you very much for any assistance.

Agreed.
Wallace is horrible, and EWTN translates.

For me, this is television at its best.
Allowing us a front row seat.
Spectacular.

It is perhaps fitting that the gospels pass the tomb of our beloved St. John Paul the Great.

The coverage on EWTN is amazing.

The woman who is translating is pitch perfect.
