VILE “SOUTH PARK” EPISODE PULLED (Catholic League Pres. responds)
Catholic League ^ | December 30, 2005 | Bill Donohue

Posted on 12/30/2005 11:40:04 AM PST by NYer

“Several news stories today are reporting on the decision by Comedy Central to pull a scheduled rerun of the ‘Bloody Mary’ episode that was  shown on ‘South Park’ on December 7-10.  The decision reflects what I asked for in our news release of December 8.  Therefore, I commend Comedy Central for finally making the right decision.  That it aired in the first place, however, does not speak well for the bigots responsible for creating it.

“In our December 8 news release, I also said, ‘Remember, they chose to insult Our Blessed Mother on the eve of the Immaculate Conception, and the holy day itself.’  The episode in question featured a statue of the Virgin Mary spraying blood from her vagina.  It was one of the most vile TV shows ever to appear, and that is why I asked Joseph Califano, a practicing Catholic and member of Viacom’s board of directors (Viacom is the parent company of Comedy Central) to issue a public condemnation of the ‘Bloody Mary’ episode; I also asked that he do whatever he could to pull any scheduled reruns of the episode.

“On December 9, the day Califano received our request, he released a statement condemning the episode.  He also said that any further decisions would have to be made by Tom Freston, president and chief executive of the New Viacom.  For the past few weeks, we have been in touch with Freston’s office awaiting his decision.  Yesterday, we received a phone call from Tony Fox, executive vice president for corporate communications at Comedy Central, informing us that there were no plans to rerun ‘Bloody Mary.’

“Already, we are being deluged with hate mail that is as obscene as it is viciously anti-Catholic.  All because we exercised our First Amendment right to request that Comedy Central not offend Catholics again!  But we’re used to such things and will not be deterred.”

Did not see the episode as I have never watched the show, but am glad to hear they will not re-air the show in question.

Why is it people have lost their sense of what is comedy and what is just plain bad taste? I could care a less that they make fun of "everyone," it still does not make it right.

There is a difference between humor and bad taste.

I don't believe because someone disagrees with the content of the episode that they do not have a sense of humor or pretend to be "holier than thou." Quite the contrary, what you may find to be humerous, i.e blasphemy, the irreverent use of the Blessed Mother's name or speaking disrespectfully of holy things certainly does not mean everyone else finds this humerous. It also does not mean that people are anti-humor. I don't watch the show so I can't comment on it, but I have several friends who do find it funny. I do worry that people and society in general have sunk so low that bad taste has become the norm.

LOL

I mean, wasn't his 15 minutes of fame over the Walmart NOTHING over already?

I have catholics in my family, yet the ones that watch South Park (my cousins who are all 8-15 years OLDER than I am) loved it.

I'm not Catholic, but I didn't find this particular part of the epsiode funny. It was supposed to make fun of Catholics who find an image of Mary in everything and to set up the joke in the "statement" by the Pope, but they didn't really get more out of it.

it's one thing to say it's unfunny, it's quite another to take one portion of one episode and try to bash those that watch it with it.....

and quite funny too.

I think Catholics need to get a grip and stop thinking everyones out to get them. Start by cleaning up your own house.

South Park makes it a point to offend EVERYONE. So should they pull the movie Team America, which offends Muslims and Hollywood? How about the one that hits Rosie O'Donnell? Michael Jackson? Mormons? Take your pick of anyone or anything and it's a target for South Park. Why should the Catholics get special privileges?

I think the episode only took shots at those who flock to fluids from icons calling them miraculous. Beyond that, I didn’t catch that it was any more anti-Catholic that their parody of OBL in his cave or jihadists shooting down Santa was anti-Islam.

It’s South Park. They parody the fringe in everything.
