Saturday of the Fourth Week of Easter

Psalm: Saturday 20

Reading 1
Acts 13:44-52

On the following sabbath
almost the whole city
gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy
and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said.
Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said,
“It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first,
but since you reject it
and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life,
we now turn to the Gentiles.
For so the Lord has commanded us,
I have made you a light to the Gentiles,
that you may be an instrument of salvation
to the ends of the earth.”

The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this
and glorified the word of the Lord.
All who were destined for eternal life came to believe,
and the word of the Lord continued to spread
through the whole region.
The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers
and the leading men of the city,
stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas,
and expelled them from their territory.
So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them
and went to Iconium.
The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4

R. (3cd) All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him,
his holy arm.
R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.
or:
R. Alleluia.
The LORD has made his salvation known:
in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
toward the house of Israel.
R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.
or:
R. Alleluia.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
break into song; sing praise.
R. All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Gospel
Jn 14:7-14

Jesus said to his disciples:
“If you know me, then you will also know my Father.
From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Philip said to Jesus,
“Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time
and you still do not know me, Philip?
Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own.
The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,
or else, believe because of the works themselves.
Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,
and will do greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father.
And whatever you ask in my name, I will do,
so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.”

From: Acts 13:44-52

Paul and Barnabas Preaches to the Pagans

[44] The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered together to hear
the Word of God. [45] But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were
filled with jealousy, and contradicted what was spoken by Paul, and
reviled him. [46] And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, "It
was necessary that the Word of God should be spoken first to you.
Since you thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal
life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. [47] For so the Lord has
commanded us, saying, 'I have set you to be a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring salvation to the uttermost parts of the earth.'"

[48] And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the
Word of God; and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.
[49] And the Word of the Lord spread throughout all the region.
[50] But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the
leading men of the city, and stirred up persecution against Paul and
Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. [51] But they shook
off the dust from their feet against them, and went to Iconium.
[52] And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

Commentary:

45. The opposition of these Jews, who in their jealousy contradict what
Paul says, will from now be the typical attitude of the synagogue to
the Gospel. It emerges everywhere the Apostle goes, with the exception
of Beroea (cf. 17:10-12).

46. Paul may have been hoping that Christianity would flourish on the
soil of Judaism, that the Jews would peacefully and religiously accept
the Gospel as the natural development of God's plans. His experience
proved otherwise: he encountered the terrible mystery of the infidelity
of most of the chosen people, his own people.

Even if Israel had been faithful to God's promises, it would still have
been necessary to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles. The
evangelization of the pagan world is not a consequence of Jewish
rejection of the Word; it is required by the universal character of
Christianity. To all men Christianity is the only channel of saving
grace; it perfects the Law of Moses and reaches out beyond the ethnic
and geographical frontiers of Judaism.

47. Paul and Barnabas quote Isaiah 49:6 in support of their decision to
preach to the Gentiles. The Isaiah text referred to Christ, as Luke
3:32 confirms. But now Paul and Barnabas apply it to themselves
because the Messiah is "light for the Gentiles" through the preaching
of the Apostles, for they are conscious of speaking in Christ's name
and on His authority. Therefore, probably here "the Lord" refers not
to God the Father but to Christ.

51. "They shook the dust from their feet": a traditional expression:
the Jews regarded as unclean the dust of anywhere other than the holy
land of Palestine. Our Lord extended the meaning of the phrase when He
told the disciples He was sending them out to preach, "If any one will
not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your
feet" (Matthew 10:14; cf. Luke 9:5). This gesture of Paul and Barnabas
echoes what Jesus said and amounted to "closing the case" or putting on
record the unbelief of the Jews.

From: John 14:7-14

Jesus Reveals the Father

(Jesus said to Thomas,) [7] "If you had known Me, you would have known
My Father also; henceforth you know Him and have seen Him.

[8] Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we shall be
satisfied." [9] Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and
yet you do not know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the
Father; how can you say, `Show us the Father?' [10] Do you not believe
that I am in the Father and the Father in Me? The words that I say to
you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me
does His works. [11] Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father
in Me; or else believe Me for the sake of the words themselves.

[12] "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me will also do the
works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go
to the Father. [13] Whatever you ask in my name I will do it, that the
Father may be glorified in the Son; [14] if you ask anything in my name,
I will do it."

Commentary:

8-11. The Apostles still find our Lord's words very mysterious, because
they cannot understand the oneness of the Father and the Son. Hence
Philip's persistence. Then Jesus "upbraids the Apostle for not yet
knowing Him, even though His works are proper to God--walking on the
water, controlling the wind, forgiving sins, raising the dead. This is
why He reproves him: for not recognizing His divine condition through
His human nature" (St. Augustine, "De Trinitate", Book 7).

Obviously the sight of the Father which Jesus refers to in this passage
is a vision through faith, for no one has ever seen God as He is (cf.
John 1:18; 6:46). All manifestations of God, or "theophanies", have
been through some medium; they are only a reflection of God's
greatness. The highest expression which we have of God our Father is
in Christ Jesus, the Son of God sent among men. "He did this by the
total fact of His presence and self-manifestation--by words and works,
signs and miracles, but above all by His death and glorious
resurrection from the dead, and finally by sending the Spirit of
truth. He revealed that God was with us, to deliver us from the
darkness of sin and death, and to raise us up to eternal life" (Vatican
II, "Dei Verbum", 4).

12-14. Before leaving this world, the Lord promises His Apostles to
make them sharers in His power so that God's salvation may be
manifested through them. These "works" are the miracles they will work
in the name of Jesus Christ (cf. Acts 3:1-10; 5:15-16; etc.), and
especially the conversion of people to the Christian faith and their
sanctification by preaching and the ministry of the sacraments. They
can be considered greater works than Jesus' own insofar as, by the
Apostles' ministry, the Gospel was not only preached in Palestine but
was spread to the ends of the earth; but this extraordinary power of
apostolic preaching proceeds from Christ, who has ascended to the
Father: after undergoing the humiliation of the cross Jesus has been
glorified and from Heaven He manifests His power by acting through His
Apostles.

The Apostles' power, therefore, derives from Christ glorified. Christ
our Lord says as much: "Whatever you ask in My name, I will do it".
"It is not that he who believes in Me will be greater than Me, but that
only that I shall then do greater works than now; greater, by him who
believes in Me, than I now do by myself without Him" (St. Augustine,
"In Ioann. Evang.", 72, 1).

Jesus Christ is our intercessor in Heaven; therefore, He promises us
that everything we ask for in His name, He will do. Asking in His name
(cf. 15:7, 16; 16:23-24) means appealing to the power of the risen
Christ, believing that He is all-powerful and merciful because He is
true God; and it also means asking for what is conducive to our
salvation, for Jesus is our Savior. Thus, by "whatever you ask" we
must understand what is for the good of the asker. When our Lord does
not give what we ask for, the reason is that it would not make for our
salvation. In this way we can see that He is our Savior both when He
refuses us what we ask and when He grants it.

It made the pagans very happy to hear this and they thanked the Lord for his message; all who were destined for eternal life became believers. Thus the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.
But the Jews worked upon some of the devout women of the upper classes and the leading men of the city and persuaded them to turn against Paul and Barnabas and expel them from their territory. Office of Readings -- Awakening Prayer

Office of Readings

If this is the first Hour that you are reciting today, you should precede it with the Invitatory Psalm.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 76 (77)
The history of salvation: the Lord's goodness, his people's infidelity (II)
How often they rebelled in the wilderness!
How often they grieved him in the desert!
Again and again they put God to the test
and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
They forgot his strength, they forgot the time
when he saved them from the oppressor’s power.

When he showed his signs in Egypt,
his wonders in the plain of Tanis,
he turned their rivers into blood
and the streams: there was nothing they could drink.
He sent biting flies to eat them up,
 and frogs to bring devastation.
He gave their fruit to the caterpillar,
the fruit of their labours to the locust.
He killed their vines with hail,
he killed their sycamores with frost.
He gave their herds as victims to hail;
 their flocks, to lightning.

He loosed upon them the heat of his anger:
 rage, fury, and destruction;
he sent his destroying angels among them.
He cleared a path for his anger:
he did not spare them from death,
but cut off their lives in pestilence.
He struck down all the first-born in the land of Egypt,
the first-fruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 76 (77)
He led his people away like sheep,
like a flock through the wilderness.
They were led in hope, they did not fear –
and the sea covered up their enemies.
He brought them within the borders he had sanctified,
to the mountain that his right hand had conquered.
He drove out the nations before them
divided their land, to be an inheritance,
and made Israel dwell in their tents.

Still they tested and angered God, the Most High,
and would not keep his decrees.
They went back to their unfaithfulness,
 like their fathers before them:
they twisted round, like a crooked bow.
They stirred him to anger by their worship in high places.
they provoked him to jealousy with their idols.

God heard, and burned with anger:
 then truly he spurned Israel.
He abandoned his dwelling-place in Shiloh,
the tent where he had lived among men.
He gave up his power to captivity,
his glory to the hands of the enemy.
He gave up his people to the sword,
he burned hot against his own inheritance.
Fire burned up their youths,
 and their maidens remained unwed.
Their priests fell to the sword,
 and their widows died unmourned.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 76 (77)
The Lord awoke as a sleeper awakes,
like a warrior fuddled with wine.
He attacked his foes from behind,
he put them to everlasting shame.
He rejected the tents of Joseph,
 he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;
but the tribe of Judah he chose,
and his beloved mountain of Sion.
He built his sanctuary as a high place,
firm as the earth he had founded for ever.
He chose David for his servant
and raised him up from his flocks.
He took him from following the pregnant ewes
to be the shepherd of Jacob, his people,
 and of Israel, his inheritance.
He pastured them with a pure heart
and led them with skilful hands.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Reading Apocalypse 18:1 - 20 ©
After this, I saw another angel come down from heaven, with great authority given to him; the earth was lit up with his glory. At the top of his voice he shouted, ‘Babylon has fallen, Babylon the Great has fallen, and has become the haunt of devils and a lodging for every foul spirit and dirty, loathsome bird. All the nations have been intoxicated by the wine of her prostitution; every king in the earth has committed fornication with her, and every merchant grown rich through her debauchery.’
A new voice spoke from heaven; I heard it say, ‘Come out, my people, away from her, so that you do not share in her crimes and have the same plagues to bear. Her sins have reached up to heaven, and God has her crimes in mind: she is to be paid in her own coin. She must be paid double the amount she exacted. She is to have a doubly strong cup of her own mixture. Every one of her shows and orgies is to be matched by a torture or a grief. I am the queen on my throne, she says to herself, and I am no widow and shall never be in mourning. For that, within a single day, the plagues will fall on her: disease and mourning and famine. She will be burnt right up. The Lord God has condemned her, and he has great power.’
There will be mourning and weeping for her by the kings of the earth who have fornicated with her and lived with her in luxury. They see the smoke as she burns, while they keep at a safe distance from fear of her agony. They will say:
‘Mourn, mourn for this great city,
Babylon, so powerful a city,
doomed as you are within a single hour’.

There will be weeping and distress over her among all the traders of the earth when there is nobody left to buy their cargoes of goods; their stocks of gold and silver, jewels and pearls, linen and purple and silks and scarlet; all the sandalwood, every piece in ivory or fine wood, in bronze or iron or marble; the cinnamon and spices, the myrrh and ointment and incense; wine, oil, flour and corn; their stocks of cattle, sheep, horses and chariots, their slaves, their human cargo.
‘All the fruits you had set your hearts on have failed you; gone for ever, never to return, is your life of magnificence and ease.’
The traders who had made a fortune out of her will be standing at a safe distance from fear of her agony, mourning and weeping. They will be saying:
‘Mourn, mourn for this great city;
for all the linen and purple and scarlet that you wore,
for all your finery of gold and jewels and pearls;
your riches are all destroyed within a single hour’.

All the captains and seafaring men, sailors and all those who make a living from the sea will be keeping a safe distance, watching the smoke as she burns, and crying out, ‘Has there ever been a city as great as this!’ They will throw dust on their heads and say, with tears and groans:
‘Mourn, mourn for this great city
whose lavish living has made a fortune
for every owner of a sea-going ship;
ruined within a single hour.’

‘Now heaven, celebrate her downfall, and all you saints, apostles and prophets: God has given judgement for you against her.’

Reading From the commentary on the letter to the Romans by Saint Cyril of Alexandria, bishop
God's mercy has been extended to all; the whole world has been saved
Though many, we are one body, and members one of another, united by Christ in the bonds of love. Christ has made Jews and Gentiles one by breaking down the barrier that divided us and abolishing the law with its precepts and decrees. This is why we should all be of one mind and if one member suffers some misfortune, all should suffer with him; if one member is honoured, all should be glad.
Paul says: Accept one another as Christ accepted you, for the glory of God. Now accepting one another means being willing to share one another’s thoughts and feelings, bearing one another’s burdens, and preserving the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. This is how God accepted us in Christ, for John’s testimony is true and he said that God the Father loved the world so much that he gave his own Son for us. God’s Son was given as a ransom for the lives of us all. He has delivered us from death, redeemed us from death and from sin.
Paul throws light on the purpose of God’s plan when he says that Christ became the servant of the circumcised to show God’s fidelity. God had promised the Jewish patriarchs that he would bless their offspring and make it as numerous as the stars of heaven. This is why the divine Word himself, who as God holds all creation in being and is the source of its well-being, appeared in the flesh and became man. He came into this world in human flesh not to be served, but, as he himself said, to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Christ declared that his coming in visible form was to fulfil the promise made to Israel. I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, he said. Paul was perfectly correct, then, in saying that Christ became a servant of the circumcised in order to fulfil the promise made to the patriarchs and that God the Father had charged him with this task, as also with the task of bringing salvation to the Gentiles, so that they too might praise their Saviour and Redeemer as the Creator of the universe. In this way God’s mercy has been extended to all men, including the Gentiles, and it can be seen that the mystery of the divine wisdom contained in Christ has not failed in its benevolent purpose. In the place of those who fell away the whole world has been saved.
A concluding prayer may follow here.

Our Lady of Fatima

Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, three Portuguese children received apparitions of Our Lady at Cova da Iria, near Fatima, a city 110 miles north of Lisbon. (See February 20 entry for Blessed Jacinta and Francisco Marto). Mary asked the children to pray the rosary for world peace, for the end of World War I, for sinners and for the conversion of Russia. At the beginning of 2003, the third visionary, Lucia dos Santos, was still living as a Carmelite nun.

Mary gave the children three secrets. Since Francisco died in 1919 and Jacinta the following year, Lucia revealed the first secret in 1927, concerning devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The second secret was a vision of hell.

Pope John Paul II directed the Holy See's Secretary of State to reveal the third secret in 2000; it spoke of a 'bishop in white' who was shot by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows into him. Many people linked this to the assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square on May 13, 1981.

The feast of Our Lady of Fatima was approved by the local bishop in 1930; it was added to the Church's worldwide calendar in 2002.

Comment:

The message of Fatima is simple: Pray. Unfortunately, some people—not Sister Lucia—have distorted these revelations, making them into an apocalyptic event for which they are now the only reliable interpreters. They have, for example, claimed that Mary's request that the world be consecrated to her has been ignored. Sister Lucia has agreed that Pope John Paul II's public consecration in St. Peter's Square on March 25, 1984, fulfilled Mary's request. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith prepared a June 26, 2000, document explaining the “third secret” (available at www.vatican.va).

Mary is perfectly honored when people generously imitate her response “Let it be done to me as you say” (Luke 1:38). Mary can never be seen as a rival to Jesus or to the Church's teaching authority, as exercised by the college of bishops united with the bishop of Rome.

Quote:

“Throughout history there have been supernatural apparitions and signs which go to the heart of human events and which, to the surprise of believers and non-believers alike, play their part in the unfolding of history. These manifestations can never contradict the content of faith, and must therefore have their focus in the core of Christ's proclamation: the Father's love which leads men and women to conversion and bestows the grace required to abandon oneself to him with filial devotion. This too is the message of Fatima which, with its urgent call to conversion and penance, draws us to the heart of the Gospel” (The Message of Fatima, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, June 26, 2000).

Poor sinners! They always carry about with them thier own executioner; that is, a guilty conscience, which continually torments them. There is no pain more excruciating than that of a guilty conscience.

-- St. John Chrysostom

All the more reason to partake of the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation) on a regular basis. Every month, every two months, every week -- everyone can set their own schedule! But set it and keep it!

May 13, 2006 Month Year Season

Optional Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima

Old Calendar: St. Robert Bellarmine, bishop and doctor

The Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated under this title following apparitions to three shepherd children — Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco — in Portugal in 1917. The message of Fatima includes a call to conversion of heart, repentance from sin and a dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially through praying the Rosary.

This optional memorial is new to the USA liturgical calendar and is inscribed on May 13. The feast of St. Robert Bellarmine has been transferred to September 17.

Our Lady of Fatima
The famous apparitions of the Virgin Mary to the children of Fatima took place during the First World War, in the summer of 1917. The inhabitants of this tiny village in the diocese of Leiria (Portugal) were mostly poor people, many of them small farmers who went out by day to tend their fields and animals. Children traditionally were assigned the task of herding the sheep.

The three children who received the apparitions had been brought up in an atmosphere of genuine piety: Lucia dos Santos (ten years old) and her two younger cousins, Francisco and Jacinta. Together they tended the sheep and, with Lucy in charge, would often pray the Rosary kneeling in the open. In the summer of 1916 an Angel appeared to them several times and taught them a prayer to the Blessed Trinity.

On Sunday, May 13, 1917, toward noon, a flash of lightning drew the attention of the children, and they saw a brilliant figure appearing over the trees of the Cova da Iria. The "Lady" asked them to pray for the conversion of sinners and an end to the war, and to come back every month, on the 13th.

Further apparitions took place June 13 and July 13. On August 13 the children were prevented by local authorities from going to the Cova da Iria, but they saw the apparition on the 19th. On September 13 the Lady requested recitation of the Rosary for an end to the war. Finally, on October 13, the "Lady" identified herself as "Our Lady of the Rosary" and again called for prayer and penitence.

On that day a celestial phenomenon also took place: the sun seemed to tumble from the sky and crash toward earth. The children had been forewarned of it as early as May 13, the first apparition. The large crowd (estimated at 30,000 by reporters) that had gathered around the children saw the phenomenon and came away astounded.

Official recognition of the "visions" which the children had at the Cova da Iria came on October 13, 1930, when the bishop of Leiria-after long inquiry-authorized the cult of Our Lady of the Rosary at the site. The two younger children had died: Francisco (who saw the apparition but did not hear the words) on April 4, 1919, and his sister Jacinta on February 20, 1920. Sister Lucia died on February 13 at her Carmelite convent in Coimbra, Portugal, after a long illness.

The Message of Fatima
The public message of Fatima recalls that of Lourdes. Through the children Mary urges prayer for sinners, recitation of the Rosary, and works of penance. On October 13 she said: "I have come to exhort the faithful to change their life, to avoid grieving Our Lord by sin; to pray the Rosary. I desire in this place a chapel in my honor. If people mend their ways, the war will soon be over. "

But Mary also confided several "secrets" to the children, some of which Lucy subsequently transmitted. Presumably there was prediction of another war in the near future and a request for special veneration of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The final secret Lucy is thought to have entrusted to Pope John XXIII.

As at Lourdes, the "apparitions" of Fatima have brought crowds of visitors. Pilgrimages, which began in the summer of 1917, have experienced growing success, not only among the Portuguese themselves but also among people from other countries, including the United States. The national pilgrimage following ecclesiastical recognition of the apparitions (May 13, 1931) is said to have drawn more than a million participants.

Popes have shown exceptional favor toward Fatima, Pius XII, Paul VI, and John Paul II in particular making a visit to the shrine. The papal interest has helped to swell the summer pilgrimages to Fatima and the basilica built at the site of the apparitions. Crowds comparable to and sometimes larger than those at Lourdes are not uncommon. In a rustic setting, pilgrims hear the message repeated that Mary spoke to the children: prayer, works of penance, recourse to her Immaculate Heart.

Lauds -- Morning Prayer

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

If this is the first Hour that you are reciting today, you should precede it with the Invitatory Psalm.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 91 (92)
Praise of God, the Creator
It is good to praise the Lord, and to sing psalms to your name, O Most High,
to proclaim your mercy in the morning and your faithfulness by night;
on the ten-stringed lyre and the harp, with songs upon the lyre.

For you give me joy, Lord, in your creation: I rejoice in the work of your hands.
How great are your works, O Lord, how immeasurably deep your thoughts.
The fool does not hear, the slow-witted do not understand.
When the wicked sprout up like grass, and the doers of evil are in full bloom,
it will come to nothing, for they will perish for ever and ever; but you, Lord, are the Highest eternally.

For behold, Lord, your enemies, how your enemies will perish, how wrongdoers will be scattered.
You will give me strength as the wild oxen have; I have been anointed with the purest oil.
I will look down upon my enemies, and hear the plans of those who plot evil against me.

The just will flourish like the palm tree, grow tall like the cedar of Lebanon.
They will be planted in the house of the Lord; in the courts of our God they will flourish.
They will bear fruit even when old, fresh and luxuriant through all their days.
They will proclaim how just is the Lord, my refuge, for in him there is no unrighteousness.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle Ezekiel 36
The Lord will renew his people
I will take you from among the Gentiles,
I will bring you together from all the earth,
I will lead you into your own land.

I will pour clean water on you,
and you will be cleansed from your filth:
from all your worship of idols I will cleanse you.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.
I will take the stone heart from your breast and put a heart of flesh in its place.
I will put my spirit among you,
so that you will walk in the paths of my law,
keep my judgements and obey them.

You shall live in the land I gave to your fathers.
You shall be a people for me, and I will be your God.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 8
The greatness of God, the dignity of man
How wonderful is your name over all the earth, O Lord, our Lord!
How exalted is your glory above the sky!

Out of the mouths of children and infants you have brought praise, to confound your enemies, to destroy your vengeful foes.

When I see the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars, which you set in their place –
what is man, that you should take thought for him? what is the son of man, that you should look after him?

You have made him but one step lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honour; you have set him over the works of your hands.

You have put everything beneath his feet, cattle and sheep and the beasts of the field,
the birds in the air and the fish in the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the waters.

How wonderful is your name above all the earth, O Lord, our Lord!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
A short Bible reading and responsory may follow here.
Canticle Benedictus
The Messiah and his forerunner
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to his people and brought about their redemption.
He has raised up the sign of salvation in the house of his servant David,
as he promised through the mouth of the holy ones, his prophets through the ages:
to rescue us from our enemies and all who hate us, to take pity on our fathers,
to remember his holy covenant and the oath he swore to Abraham our father,
that he would give himself to us, that we could serve him without fear – freed from the hands of our enemies –
in uprightness and holiness before him, for all of our days.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his path,
to let his people know their salvation, so that their sins may be forgiven.
Through the bottomless mercy of our God, one born on high will visit us
to give light to those who walk in darkness, who live in the shadow of death;
to lead our feet in the path of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Some short prayers may follow here, to offer up the day's work to God.
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.
A concluding prayer may follow here.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.
A M E N

Show Us the Father
May 13, 2006

There was a time when Communism was on its way to rule the world.

Saturday of the Fourth Week of Easter
Father Todd Belardi, LC

John 14:7-14
Jesus said to his disciples: "If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him." Philip said to him, "Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ´Show us the Father´? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it."

Introductory Prayer: Father, may I see you in faith during this time of prayer. Help me to know your Son so that I can love him more. May I love him more so that I will follow him with perfection.

Petition: Lord Jesus, help me to experience your love for me in a personal way.

1. What We See in Christ. To see great people is striking. We can be overwhelmed by their presence as we think of the things they have done. Today in particular, we remember Pope John Paul II, since on this day 25 years ago, an attempt was made on his life. Pope John Paul touched so many people during his lifetime; he amazed people because of who he was as a person. I can be awestruck by people, but how much more should the person of Christ amaze me. When I enter into his presence in front of the Blessed Sacrament, do I kneel down understanding all that he has done for me personally? We can take Christ’s presence for granted, as Philip does in today’s Gospel passage. It will have to wait till Philip experiences Christ’s love, after witnessing his sacrifice and resurrection, for him to see Christ differently.

2. Believe in His Works. There was a time when Communism was on its way to rule the world. Many people thought that freedom and religion were ready to disappear from the face of the earth as its grip extended throughout the globe. Prayer and penance were the weapons that three children of Fatima preached after the Blessed Virgin appeared to them on May 13, 1917. And they won the day. Mary promised that Communism would be defeated through works of faith. Without doubt, the fall of Communism was a work of God.

3. Open Your Heart. If we open our hearts to God, God opens himself to us. When we give a little, God always gives us much more. The fear of being open with God is that we might have to change our habits. But we must have confidence that God wants only what is good for us. “Be not afraid. Christ knows ‘what is in man.’ He alone knows it. I ask you… I beg you, let Christ speak to you. He alone has the words of eternal life, yes, of eternal life.” (Pope John Paul II, Inaugural Address, October 22, 1978). Open your heart to Christ and fix your gaze on his. See in his eyes, hear in his word, and see in his actions a God that loves us with an infinite, eternal love. There are no limits to God’s love; will there be a limit to ours?

Dialogue with Christ: Lord, Jesus give me a heart of love like yours. May I see in you the perfect man, the perfect example of love, of how I ought to love. I surrender myself to you as you desire. Work in my life the miracle of transforming my heart to be like yours.

Resolution: I will offer Christ a special sacrifice today for the conversion of sinners, that they may see Christ as the answer to their search for the meaning of life.

Thank you for these posts and Happy Feast Day of Our Lady of Fatima. Today at mass I was thinking about what would have happened had John Paul II not survived the assassination attempt 25 years ago today.

I was imagining who would have become Pope... and I kept thinking probably Daneels... and how much different things might be today. Instead of the break up of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact we probably would have had World War 3.

Penance, penance, penance. Our Lady of Fatima, thank you and keep praying for us.
