April 9, 2007 issue - Rick Warren is as big as a bear, with a booming voice and easygoing charm. Sam Harris is compact, reserved and, despite the polemical tone of his books, friendly and mild. Warren, one of the best-known pastors in the world, started Saddleback in 1980; now 25,000 people attend the church each Sunday. Harris is softer-spoken; paragraphs pour out of him, complex and fact-filledas befits a Ph.D. student in neuroscience. At NEWSWEEK's invitation, they met in Warren's office recently and chatted, mostly amiably, for four hours. Jon Meacham moderated. Excerpts follow.

[...It is a Biblical call to holiness...]
We are destroying speculations and every lofty
thing raised up against the knowledge of God,
and {we are} taking every thought captive to the
obedience of Christ, The Lord. —2Corinthians 10:5—
**************************
God COMMANDS us to be Holy. Be ye Holy as I Am Holy.
We are told not to imitate the World. Yet the church
feels compelled to be like the world, incrementally
lowering our Holy Standards for what? To be popular
with the enemies of Christ?
It was important to teach our children how to self
filter, because God tells us to “take thoughts captive”.
We taught our children (and their friends) to turn
their head away or to close their eyes when they saw
something that gave them the “uh oh” feeling. I find
it interesting that I never had to tell them to do
this - they knew. We finally just stopped watching
network TV. Even now, we only watch cable and
selected Video/DVD’s .
TRUE STORY
One day I had a car full of 10 year old boys - my son
and his friends. Everyone was talking and making noises the
way boys do, when suddenly they all went silent. When
I looked in my rear view mirror, they all had their hands
over their eyes. We were just passing a billboard on the
91 Freeway that had a picture of Nadia Comaneche in her
underware. The boys covered their eyes on their own with
no prompting from me. Self filtering, is self control.
God will call out a Samuel’s generation of people “set
apart” - a royal priesthood. Yeah... Holiness means
somethinig to God.
I haven’t been to a movie since Star Wars I.
and I don’t know what “Purple Haze” is.
I don’t go to movies because most of the time
I am either embarrased or profoundly insulted.
It’s just me, but I KNOW Jesus is sitting with
me when I watch movies - or read books. Hubby
and I stopped watching CSI because of the how
to be deviant agenda.
Just me. Living in a cave. Oh well.
Clues to your age.
My son is 26 years old and is a Missionary in Japan.
Nadia Comaneche should have been a clue too.
That was the clue. Its been a good 15 years since anyone has even heard of Nadia Comaneche, much less seen her in her underwear.
Yup. Nadia in her Hanes.
Much agree.Thanks.
Anyone know what happened with those deleted posts?
Congrats. Haven’t been quite that absent from such but am quite restricted in what I’m comfortable with in a lot of respects.
I do suspect that before The Lord returns, copulating in broad daylight in the average park unbothered will be the norm in many cities—between all manner of . . . creatures.
Well, grade school kids are “doing it”
in the classroom in front of classmates.
They have forgotten how to blush.
True.
My nephew is studying to go to Japan as a missionary.
Don’t know...didn’t see them.
Charlie007 doesn't have a problem with Warren singing a song about the high from an illicit drug to his congregation...thought I was being extreme in my view against it. He said that I was using my own interpretation of Scripture relative to holy living and separation from the world.
It appears as though all of Charlie007’s posts were deleted.
The account was banned or suspended.
Jimmi Hendrix... OK, I thought it was something to do
with that guy whose name is no name, or whatever. He
was at the Superbowl ... Prince! That’s it. He likes
purple too.
I can’t listen to Hendrix. He yodels with the guitar.
If you play enough notes, some are bound to work.
But never had any respect for him. Besides, I didn’t
listen to R&R until much later in life. I have perfect
pitch - The Beatles offended my ear. Until their songs
became “elevator music”, I really didn’t enjoy them. Paul
McCartny writes beautiful songs. Wasn’t allowed to listen
at home. We did the same thing with our kids.
We also didn’t let our kids wear ears, because 1) we
wanted them to keep their hearing, and 2) If you can’t
listen to it in public, good chance it’s either too loud or too
offensive. Fortunately, my children were into Muscial
Theatre and Brentwood Jazz or anything from Integrity
Music. Our family’s all time favorite CD is “Rejoice
Africa”. Gives me goosebumps just typinig the name.

NEW THOUGHT
The church we used to attend was into drama. Every
Valentine’s Day we had a romantic evening with music
and candle light dinner for couples. It was in the
fellowship hall, but we did all secular music, comedy
sketches from Seinfeld, Saturday Night Live and famous
sitcoms. Were we in sin too?
(More narrow minded cave dweller ramblings from Mary (Jo) Anne.
With what hat program is your Nephew applying?
Rejoice Africa. Will look it up.
There was a movie—have no memory of what sort even . . . wherein there was an African choir or some such singing an African hymn—I don’t know if it was in that ‘click’ type language or different—but it was wonderously beautiful. Have tried to find it several times since. I wonder if that album has such on it.
I do not know...I will ask.
