French Jewish Group Opposes Pius XII Sainthood

Friday, October 17, 2008 4:30 PM

PARIS -- France's main Jewish organization warned Friday that efforts to make wartime Pope Pius XII a saint would deal "a severe blow" to relations between Catholics and Jews.

The warning from an umbrella organization of French Jewish groups comes as the Vatican mounts a campaign to refute accusations Pius did not do enough to try to stop the extermination of 6 million Jews during World War II.

"Pope Pius XII, worried about burning his bridges with Germany, never made a clear statement denouncing the singular monstrosity of the extermination of millions of Jews. Moreover, he did not do so after the war either, which is profoundly shocking," the organization, Conseil Representatif des Institutions juives de France, said in a statement.

"If carried out, the plan to beatify Pius XII, who was pope between 1939 and 1958, would deal a severe blow to relations between the Catholic Church and the Jewish world," the statement said.

There is no correlation between practicing your faith and calling someone a Saint. It is not biblical to even call your self a Christian if you would read your bible it is said that they were called Christians meaning little Christ’s first in Antioch. They did not run around and call themselves Christians or Saints, they were addressed to as the Saints at this place or that place. God calls people to be Apostles it is a gift there are no gifts of being a Bishop in the bible. Bishop is actually the word for elder person in the community. If you would read your bible you would know this stuff.

Yes there is. Who are you to tell us to stop practicing our faith?

It is not biblical to even call your self a Christian if you would read your bible it is said that they were called Christians meaning little Christ’s first in Antioch.

If you'd actually read my last post my statement was about calling someone [not yourself] Christian. So you are twisting my words to suit your purposes. Even so, if you would read your bible you would see scripture does not prohibit calling yourself or anyone else a Christian or a saint. In fact, you kept asking me upthread if I was a saint.

They did not run around and call themselves Christians or Saints

That is purely speculation on your part, and nothing more.

God calls people to be Apostles it is a gift

Sure it is a gift; I didn't say it wasn't. It was also an elevation - they were leaders and were treated as such among other Christians.

there are no gifts of being a Bishop in the bible. Bishop is actually the word for elder person in the community.

I didn't say there were, so you're arguing against the wind. So, all elderly persons were bishops? I don't think so, and if you'd read your bible you'd know that.

Seriously, you should spend more time in the scriptures instead of telling us how we should practice our faith.

How is calling someone a Christian or a Saint being kind? One day that person may stand before God and they may be asked why should you be let into heaven and their answer could be "because so and so said I was a Christian or a Saint". So tell me have you done more harm than good?

I'm still waiting for you to show me where scripture prohibits it. If you don't think it's kind, that's your choice. I'm not going to spend my time convincing you otherwise.

LOL. Yeah, I'm sure. Now you're just getting ridiiculous. Remember where this started, with you protesting that "putting the power of making someone a saint in the hands of man", which is something the Church doesn't do. That's a fact. And now you're just floundering around.

"Jewish leaders are calling on the Vatican to ensure that all relevant archival materials related to Pius XII, also known as Eugenio Pacelli, be made available before "deciding on his sainthood.
Jesuit Father Peter Gumpel, who has collected evidence to support the sainthood, told CNS that millions of Catholics back the sainthood. They are upset that Pius isn’t advancing, said Gumpel, who also acknowledged that Jewish opinion is divided about the Pope’s wartime role.

LOOKS LIKE TO ME SOMEONE HAS TO DECIDE WHO BECOMES A SAINT OTHER THAN GOD!

A saint is a saint made by God; not the Church. What you've quoted is about the Church deciding on the acknowledgement. Do I really have to explain it all over again?

It would be easier if you just reread the thread. If your mind is set that the Church is doing something it is not, and you are not going to be persuaded, it would be best to just drop it.
