How Old Is Your Church?

If you are a Lutheran, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an ex- monk of the Catholic Church, in the year 1517.

If you belong to the Church of England, your religion was founded by King Henry VIII in the year 1534 because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to remarry.

If you are a Presbyterian, your religion was founded by John Knox in Scotland in the year 1560.

If you are a Protestant Episcopalian, your religion was an offshoot of the Church of England founded by Samuel Seabury in the American colonies in the 17th century.

If you are a Congregationalist, your religion was originated by Robert Brown in Holland in 1582.

If you are a Methodist, your religion was launched by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744.

If you are a Unitarian, Theophilus Lindley founded your church in London in 1774.

If you are a Mormon (Latter Day Saints), Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, N.Y., in 1829.

If you are a Baptist, you owe the tenets of your religion to John Smyth, who launched it in Amsterdam in 1605.

If you are of the Dutch Reformed church, you recognize Michaelis Jones as founder, because he originated your religion in New York in 1628.

If you worship with the Salvation Army, your sect began with William Booth in London in 1865.

If you are a Christian Scientist, you look to 1879 as the year in which your religion was born and to Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy as its founder.

If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as 'Church of the Nazarene," "Pentecostal Gospel." "Holiness Church," "Pilgrim Holiness Church," "Jehovah's Witnesses," your religion is one of the hundreds of new sects founded by men within the past century.

If you are Catholic, you know that your religion was founded in the year 33 by Jesus Christ the Son of God, and it is still the same Church.

The Catholic Church isn’t any different or any better then any of the other sects of the church. We could always ask how many people were burned at the stake by Baptists vs Catholics, lowest number wins.

first point first...it is different and it is better. people burned at the stake were primarily prisoners of the state...not trying to exclude Catholicism from any responsibility, but I could failly easily justify their behavior if necessary. Now let's get into numbers....the number of Christian souls lost through the "reformation" and leading people away from the true church must be staggering....millions I'd say, and the Baptists are as guilty as any of the other "denominations"

First of all, there wasn’t any Roman Catholic Churches in 33 A.D.

sure there were...I was Terry 9 months before I was born, I just wasn't referred to by that name. Same with the Catholic church, probably named around 100 AD but nevertheless existant from the time of Christ.

Actually, that is not exactly true. Catholics count Peter as the first Pope, based on a misinterpretation of gospel where Christ asked his disciples a momentous question

I get it now, for 2012 years the Catholic church has been misinterpreting scripture...luckily you came along to straighten her out....I have to put my money on one of you two.....OK, I've decided.

The Church of all believers through faith in Christ is much older than the RCC, which attempted to hijack the reputation of thee Body in the Medieval Ages.

True believers do not surrender their crowns to the arrogance of the RCC.

And the fact is that the the history of the RCC is also filled with numerous corrupt immoral episodes and popes who were greedy and anything but Christian. While Christ is the head of the church, man-created organizations like the RCC run by falable men and no one church has a monopoly on the truth. Those are the facts.

almost the facts, but not quite...the corrupt (and there were) members of the church in no way diminishes her role as the true church of Jesus Christ. While Christ did not protect the church from being inhabited by idiots...He did promise that He would protect His church from any error in her teaching of faith and morals. Were there greedy and fallible popes...yes, but they were only fallible in their own humanity. People are just people...some better than others, but there is only one true Christian religion and that is Roman Catholicism. The Orthodox groups which split off are indeed true Catholic groups, but they lack full compliance in that they deny the primacy of the Pope....and yes, only one church (Catholic) has a monopoly on the COMPLETE truth.

Ok,....Let's STOP right here! Stop the Protestant bashing! Lutherans are **Christians**. Christ is the foundation of Christianity! Their faith and church goes back to Christ. Martin Luther merely got their Christian faith ( founded by Christ) back on track, and correctly **reformed** the faith, and threw out the corruption and abuse that had infiltrated it.

I don't think it is Protestant bashing to point out that the Protestant movement itself made that movement less than complete Christianity. They removed books from the bible, they decided that the Eucharist was not the body and blood of Christ, they came up with sola scriptura, they decided that praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased was without merit, they figured that apostolic succession was unnecessary, and on and on. Are protestants Christian, of course they are, just a little on the incomplete side. How can more that 20,000 denominations, all of which teach some differences, be right?? The Catholic church remains, like Christ, the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

if you believe in Christ, then you follow His instructions....very plain and very easy to understand. Making up your own rules as you go along doesn't count!!!

I do, I do, they are, and I don't.

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--" My salvation is bought and paid for by the sacrifice of Christ, not by anything I do other than have faith in Him and live out His teachings.

More than that. It is fabrication built upon either nothing or close to nothing.

What would Catholic monks, sworn to poverty, be doing owning “properties” ????

individual monks take vows. Their orders or organizations however, owned monasteries, land, libraries, hand written books (lucky for you includes bibles) and various other assets. Why would you consider that unusual??

THREE YEARS ago (Saturday, June 27, 2009) when I wrote

I probably meant what you said ...the religious orders owned the property

but still not the individual monks..

Why has this old thread been given new life ???

But the question is, what was the stance of the Catholic institution towards those who dissented from their point of view for most of Christian history

I'll try to make this as easy for you to understand as possible....you are the church, the only church, everybody who is Christian is a member of your church, you cannot imagine anything but your church, you are the protector of the church....there is nothing on earth as important as the church.....and someone comes along and challenges it. They try to tell people not to believe in your church, to believe what they say is the truth, they try to accuse you of being evil. They are attacking the church that you are sworn to defend against all challengers. What if it were your country rather than your church....marines, army, navy, nuclear weapons....hell yes! that's the way that Christians (Catholics) felt. By the way, most executions were sanctioned by the state, not the church as such.

You see therein lies the rub, you are misinformed about what the “true church” happens to be because you accept the dogma of your sect of “the true church”. The church started way before the Catholic Church, which is just another branch of the church, not the root.
