Mormon-Catholic tolerance goes back to Brigham Young years – Daniel Petersen (OPEN)
Deseret News ^ | March 4, 2010 | Daniel Peterson

During his forum address at Brigham Young University on Feb. 23, Francis Cardinal George, head of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, mentioned last year's participation by President Thomas S. Monson and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in the centennial celebrations for Salt Lake City's Catholic Cathedral of the Madeleine.

Plainly, although none can deny some harsh rhetoric over the years, Mormon respect for Catholics long predates the 2009 centennial of the Cathedral of the Madeleine. In fact, it dates to the days of Joseph Smith himself. Referring to the mob burning of the Ursuline Convent near Boston in 1834, Joseph remarked:

-SNIP-

"The old Catholic church traditions are worth more than all you have said," Joseph told his followers in a sermon delivered less than two weeks before he himself was murdered by a mob. A strong foundation for friendship and respect toward Catholics was laid down in the earliest years of Mormonism.

The full quote from Smith referred to by Petersen is "The old Catholic church traditions are worth more than all you have said. Here is a principle of logic that most men have no more sense than to adopt. I will illustrate it by an old apple tree. Here jumps off a branch and says, I am the true tree, and you are corrupt. If the whole tree is corrupt, are not its branches corrupt? If the Catholic religion is a false religion, how can any true religion come out of it? If the Catholic church is bad, how can any good thing come out of it?"

Early FR thread on the Catholic-Mormon subject.

Joseph Smith's Sermon On Plurality of Gods (as printed in History of the Church, Vol. 6, p. 473-479)

Raises suspicion of Petersen's comment: A strong foundation for friendship and respect toward Catholics was laid down in the earliest years of Mormonism.

Daniel Peterson? You mean the expert in linguistics? He’s one of the biggest, and I mean BIG, liars in Mormonism.

For once I actually agree with Joseph Smith.

He thinks he is an expert in everything —now he’s gonna tell us all about Catholic and Mormon relations. Mormonism considered the Catholic Church the great whore, harlot for many, many years and it is clearly documented. Peterson lies openly in this article

Daniel Peterson is a professor of Islamic studies and Arabic at Brigham Young University, a member of BYU’s Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS), and a contributor to both the Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research (FAIR) and the Scholarly & Historical Information Exchange for Latter-day Saints (SHIELDS). He is the author of numerous articles and books on Mormon history and doctrine. Here he discusses church history and the challenges raised against the Book of Mormon; his views on intellectuals, dissent and excommunication; and controversy between Jews and Mormons over the baptism of the dead. This is the edited transcript of an interview conducted on Feb. 27, 2006.

From Vatican says Mormon baptisms are invalid

"While the Mormon baptismal rite refers to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Mormon beliefs about the identity of the three persons is so different from Catholic and mainline Christian belief that "one cannot even consider this doctrine to be a heresy arising from a false understanding of Christian doctrine," said a Vatican explanation of the ruling. Now now, we already know you are not to use the actual words of lds.
(They could just be not translated correctly)

From the article, on how the golden plates were translated by JS:

There were a couple of means that were prepared for this. One was that he used an instrument that was found with the plates that was called the Urim and Thummim. This is kind of a divinatory device that goes back into Old Testament times.

Actually, most of the translation was done using something called a seer stone. The seer stone is obviously something like the Urim and Thummim.

It seems to be a stone that was found in the vicinity, and I can't say exactly how it would have worked. It may have been a kind of a concentrating device or a device to facilitate concentration.

He would put the stone for most of the concentration period in the bottom of a hat, presumably to exclude surrounding light. Then he would put his face into the hat. It's kind of a strange image for us today, but it sort of makes sense if you think of a computer screen, I suppose: You don't want to be looking at [anything] against a bright background; it hurts your eyes.

... He would read off what he saw in the stone, apparently in passages of about 25 to 35 words. ...

Of all the religious groups that needs to be most wary of Mormon proselytizing, it should be the Catholic church and its (administrative/priestly/lay) leaders.

The Mormons' best successes in Europe is Spain. The Mormons have been pilfering among Catholics and disassociated Catholics in South & Central America + the U.S.
