Leader decries Vatican’s view of US group

NEW YORK - The leader of the group representing most American nuns challenged the Vatican’s reasons for disciplining her organization, insisting that raising questions about church doctrine should not be seen as rebellion.

Sister Pat Farrell, president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, said Monday that Catholics should be able to search for answers about faith without fear.

“I don’t think this is a healthy environment for the church,’’ Farrell said in a phone interview. “We can use this event to help move things in that direction - where it’s possible to pose questions that will not be seen as defiance or opposition.’’

Farrell’s remarks are her first since she met last week in Rome with the Vatican orthodoxy office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which concluded in April that the group had strayed broadly from church teaching.

The Vatican has appointed three American bishops to conduct a full-scale overhaul of the organization, sparking protests globally in support of the sisters.

In the Rome meeting, Farrell said she did not ask Vatican officials to drop their demand for reform. “I think we could clearly see in the tenor of the conversation that that was not an option,’’ she said.

She characterized the meeting as frank and open but difficult, and said she did not leave feeling more hopeful about what is ahead.

The Vatican has directed the bishops to oversee rewriting the statutes of the Leadership Conference, reviewing its plans and programs including approving speakers, and ensuring the group properly follows Catholic prayer and ritual.

“I don’t yet feel that we’re any further than just the initial conversation,’’ Farrell said.

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious, based in Silver Spring, Md., represents about 80 percent of the 57,000 nuns in.....

They're good at this.

They have a well thumbed playbook of euphemisms from which they pull these phrases. This one implies nothing more than ingenuous, sincere inquiry into the mystery of the Mystical Body.

What she doesn't say, of course, is that Christ, through His Church, has already supplied us with certain "answers" which we call dogma. The sisters reject these "answers" and what to replace them with their own.

A demand for reform is different than ‘searching for answers’.

>>They have a well thumbed playbook of euphemisms from which they pull these phrases.<<

One must ask why they are airing their dirty habits in public. If they want reform then it should be discussed within the Church, not paraded in public.

Lots of nuns seem to need defrocking these days.

They have already formed their own religion. It’s time to make it official, instead of hiding behind their cowardice.

When Sister Pat Farrell says “should be able to search for answers about faith” she means “should be able to advocate for heresy to replace unchangeable dogma”.

If we are collectively the Body of Christ, this woman is the lower intestine - the bowels where all the harmful foul-smelling waste is located.

that is a line for the communist playbook. Use free speech to destroy free speech.

sow doubt for any little point to collapse the entire institution. The point can be as simple as the location of a door.

I so badly wanted to become a nun-my parents wouldn’t allow it and back in those days, you obeyed your parents. It was also a lot more difficult to become a nun as they weren’t really hurting for membership back then and could be very choosy; if you didn’t have family support to be a nun, that worked against you.

Anyway, that being said, being a nun meant one thing: serving the Lord, all day every day.
There is nothing to “search for” or questions to be asked, unless you want a different outcome and that’s what they are looking for.
The only question they should be asking is:
“How can I serve you today Lord?”

Anything beyond that is part of an agenda.
