Survey Says Catholics Upset Over Pope's Catholic Views
CAP News ^

Posted on 03/19/2013 9:01:15 AM PDT by Alex Murphy

WASHINGTON (CAP) - American Catholics this week, while generally happy with the newly elected Pope Francis, expressed disappointment that the new head of the Catholic Church insisted on espousing such Catholic views.

A new study out of the Pew Research Center said that while 74 percent of American Catholics approve of Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio's appointment as pontiff, almost 60 percent wished he held different views on abortion, premarital sex, contraception and same-sex marriage.

"Most respondents questioned why the pope has to be so darn Catholic, to use a phrase that came up over and over again," said Pew spokesman Dr. Francis Spitznagel. In addition to those issues mentioned above, most Catholics weren't thrilled with the new pope's views on adultery and "pretty much any of that sex stuff," said Spitznagel, again quoting the study.

"Just once I'd like to see a pope who didn't have a problem with premarital sex," said Carole Thomson, 29, who describes herself as a "devout Catholic" who nonetheless has never married and has had 19 sexual partners, some of them women.

"It seems kind of backward in this day and age to have the leader of the Catholic Church unwilling to bend on some of these things," she said, referring to the basic tenets of the Catholic religion that the pope is sworn to uphold.

Most Catholics did agree, though, that Pope Francis was an improvement over Pope Benedict, whose excuse for not stopping the church's child sex abuse scandal was that he was hard of hearing and thought the priests were actually "amusing" children.

"Also, we're pretty sure the new guy's not a Nazi, so there's that," said Thomson.

Folks, this is satire! Relax!
Or, don’t relax. Because like all real humor it contains truth, and this is getting spread around as fact. But these quotes and the photo are a satire.

Excommunicating Pelosi and all of the politicians who advocate killing babies in the womb would do a great deal to strengthen the Catholic Church. I wonder if this Pope will dare.

You might have mistakenly been reading another of CAP's satire pieces:
"For years, I thought my aides were telling me that people had come forward to say the priests were amusing children in their parishes," said Benedict in a prepared statement released by the Vatican. "With laughter being one of God's greatest gifts to mankind, you can understand why I didn't think this would be a problem."

Benedict claims he reassigned the accused priests, rather than remove them from a position where they would come into contact with children, because he was trying to "spread the laughter"....

....Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi presented the Pope's statement at a press conference Saturday morning, prompting reporters to ask him if they honestly expected people to believe that the failure to effectively deal with hundreds of abuse claims over many decades could be attributed to the Pope being hard of hearing.

"Well, I'll say this about that," responded Father Lombardi, before shuffling his notes around a bit, pausing for a full two minutes, and then saying, "Um ... that's all we got."

No, I’ve heard ex-Catholics make this argument, sadly. Not here, but in other places. :(

Maybe they think the Catholicism is a political organization rather than a religion.

Being an american democrat AND a roman catholic may be an OXYMORON...

But it is the normal, the unusual is a Catholic that supports the GOP, it has always been that way in America.

Why wasn’t Nancy Pelosi interviewed for this article? She’s a disgrace to Catholics too.

Actually it is the opposite, she and Obama are the favorites of Catholics, they lead the democrat party.

Good catch, but after 150 years of the Catholic effect on American politics, I’m not 100% convinced of it.

Carole Thomson, 29, who describes herself as a "devout Catholic" who nonetheless has never married and has had 19 sexual partners, some of them women.

Seems like her dictionary definition of "devout" is different than mine.

Interesting. I am Catholic and I know a whole lot of other Catholics. Not a one of them have expressed this kind of view regarding Pope Francis.

Um... it's satire. Not reality.

But close, re-e-e-e-aal close.

I figure “Catholics” like her were the basis for the Kaylee McMurphy character in “Choose Your Pope!”
