Pope Francis: Protect the poor and the Earth
The Philadelphia Inquirer / The Associated Press ^ | March 19, 2013 | Nicole Winfield

VATICAN CITY - After a week marked by acts of simplicity and openness, Pope Francis finally let his words do the talking as he officially began his stewardship of the Catholic Church on Tuesday.

"Please," he implored the tens of thousands, both poor and powerful, gathered outside St. Peter's Basilica. "Let us be protectors of creation, protectors of God's plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment."

--snip--

At one point, as he neared a group of people in wheelchairs, he signaled for the jeep to stop, hopped off and approached a disabled man held up to the barricade by his family, blessing him and then kissing him on his forehead.......

If you'd like to read the actual homily (it's not long), you can go to this thread.

Now, more than ever, we need to call to mind the words of Archbishop Charles Chaput:

We make a very serious mistake if we rely on media like the New York Times, Newsweek, CNN, or MSNBC for reliable news about religion. These news media simply don’t provide trustworthy information about religious faith—and sometimes they can’t provide it, either because of limited resources or because of their own editorial prejudices. These are secular operations focused on making a profit. They have very little sympathy for the Catholic faith, and quite a lot of aggressive skepticism toward any religious community that claims to preach and teach God’s truth.

Things of the Church reported in the secular media, particularly about the Holy Father, need to be viewed with the most jaundiced eye. They will do their best to make it spin left.

A thoughtful and historically acurate framing of environmental issues would have him saying, “Let us work to free people that they may be productive, wealthier, and therefore able to be more interested and economically able to protect this beautiful earth G-d has bequeathed us.”

What I can't stand, is that we let the Left take over good words like "compassion," "social justice," and even "marriage."

Wasn't it Confucius who said that the principle requirement for conserving society is to conserve (or recover) the proper meanings of words?

Surely George Orwell had something to say about that.

Let's take back our words!

We are commanded in the bible to be stewards of the earth, and to care for the poor, the widows, and the orphans.

I'm not Catholic, but I don't see anything wrong with teaching that.

Thank you.

Of course the media wants us to read it the way they read it.

Jesus healed the man by the pool. He healed a paralytic that was put before him by his four friends. What’s the problem?

When social ministry begins and ends with Jesus — that is the way it is supposed to be.

Do we know if this man was healed? What did Pope Francis say to him?

Sin no more?

The 'media' can kiss my fuzzy pale arse.

Not to put too fine a point on it....

I get called on being a conservative hard-ass all the time, but I am a steward of the earth, and do have responsibility for the poor, the infirm, the widows and the orphans.

That comes straight out of the book. I don't know any other way to read it.

I just don't believe in stealing from other people to meet that obligation.

Exactly. Helping the poor is what all Christians are called to do. But there is a huge difference between “helping the poor” and socialism. The media are trying to spin it that this pope endorses wealth redistribution when he hasn’t indicated any such belief. They are acting like Pope Benedict and Pope John Paul or any Catholic for that matter ignored the poor and that’s simply not true. As always, the MSM is hard at work twisting words and trying to get Christians fighting amongst themselves. Don’t fall for it.

I don't either, but it's a very thin line between teaching respect and stewardship of the Earth to broaching climate change alarmism, so I hope he never goes there. I'm not Catholic either anymore, but I still have a great respect for the Pope.

Stewardship of one’s environment is scriptural and conservation used to be an American value. That is why it was easy for decietful socialists to use our desire to care for the environment to con he public into statist “environentalism”. I certainly hope he will clarify what methods he intends for people to use to “protect the environment” becuase his statement has connotations that give me pause.

For me, the term “social justice” has no meaning other than statist repression of my God given rights. That term passing a pastor’s lips is enough to cause me to change churches. I certainly hope the Pope is not bandying about such evil concepts. Google Francis and social justice and you just get the usual commie suspects (huffington post, NYT, etc.) projecting their desires onto him.

Note how he says 'us' and not government, guess the lame stream media in their rush failed to catch that little part ;)
