Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations. (Genesis 10:1-5)
We come to the Table of Nations, which has been described even by unbelieving higher critics of scripture, as a remarkably accurate, and unique historical document. This Divine family record is the connecting genealogical path from the immediate aftermath of flood, to the emergence of the various nations which we see in Biblical history.*
Humanity as we know it, has a threefold root system, for we all trace back either to Shem, Ham or Japheth. There are no races, for behind those three, we all descend from Noah, and from Adam before him.
The Table starts with Japheth, and his seven sons.
Gomer- The descendants of this son of Japheth eventually settled north of the Black Sea, in a district which was called Cimmeria ,and even today is known as Crimea. It is possible that the name of Gomer also survives in the name of the Germanic peoples.
Gomers three sons were ,Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. Ashkenaz is definitely associated with the Germans. The Jews call German Jews, Ashekenazi. It is also possible that the name Riphath is preserved in the name of Europe, the continent whish was predominantly settled by the sons of Japheth. The Armenian and Turkik peoples around the Caspian Sea and the Caucus mountains descend from Togarmeh.
Magog- This name can mean,The place of Gog. Magog was believed to be the ancestor of the Scythians, the original settlers around the Black Sea area.
Madai- Madai is the father of the Medes, who dwelt in what is now known as Persia and eventually intermarried with the Elamites,(Semitic) to become the ancestors of the Persian people. The sons of Madai also inhabited the Indian subcontinent, the Indo,Aryan peoples descending from them. The Aryans of Inida have always insisted that their Ancestor was a man named, Iyepti, which is perhaps a corruption of Japheth.
Javan- The son of Japheth, whose name was eventually pronounced Ionias went on to become the Greek nation, settling in the Aegian sea, and in Asia minor(Turkey). Javans children are also listed, Elisha, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. The name Elisha would become Hellas, from which the term Hellenistic, or the name geographical name Hellespont derives.
The Greek people in their time of idolatry worshipped as chief God Jupiter a possible corruption of the name of their ancestor, Japheth.
Tarshish would settle in North Africa,(Carthage) and in Spain,(Tartessos), but eventually Phoenicians would prevail over them . Kittim would be associated with those who settled the Cypriot Islands, and the Greek mainland also. Dodanim may have given his name to the straits of the Dardenelles.
Tubal- and Meshech- Both of these are usually associated together in the Bible. THey originated in and around the area we now call Turkey, and spread out as far as the Caucusus mountains, and the Georgian and Armenian areas.
Tiras- Josephus tells us that Tiras, would give descent to the Thracian peoples, and possibly the Etruscans of Italy came from him as well.
Noah predicted that Japheth, the expander would expand, and thus he did both geographically, colonially, culturally philosophically, and intellectually. It is of interest that to this day, it is western civilization which is dominant in the world for good and evil.
It is also of interest that in the predictions of the final battles, the very names of the sons and grandchildren of Japheth re-emerge as participants in the final gentile attempt to wipe out Israel and overthrow Israels God.
Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, And say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee(Ezekiel 38:2-6)

I just read that passage silently to myself. The voice I heard wasn't mine; it was John Huston's.
Fascinating, but reliable? It *seems* to flub the easy stuff, even. For instance, “Jupiter” was the Roman god of legend, equivalent to he who the Greeks called, “Zeus.” The only connection I’ve ever heard drawing it back to Greek was “Zeus Pater,” which is an etymology which is highly questionable but which certainly seems to contradict the “Japheth” connection.
You know you are right about Jupiter being the Roman God. Jupiter could still be a corruption of Japheth, the Romans also being sons of Japheth. I can’t say that these things are all reliable, which is why I tried to use tentative language.
From what I’ve found, Jupiter comes from Diespater, the Italic god on whom the qualities of Zeus were overlaid. Diespater comes, in turn from Diayus Pita, the “sky father” of Indo-European myth. It seems hard to relate Japheth to Daiyus Pita, but I will not that Ja often represents YHWH, so maybe Japheth represents more of a translation than an evolution. Any clue is pheth can be related to father in Hebrew?
I find these things fascinating, thanks for your input. The Hebrew meaning of Japheth is “Expander”, Noah made a word play in his prophecy when he declared that Japheth(Expander) shall Expand”.
Riphath has no relationship to Europa. the name "Europe" comes from the Cretan Greek legend of the Phoenician princess of that name. No phonetic resemblance to Riphath
The Armenians are not related to Turkic peoples linguistically, though the current day "Turks" are mostly Indo-European racially, as are the Armenians (and for that matter the Persians, indians and europeans)
incorrect. Germania was an exonym, not an endonym
Scyth was a catch-all term used by Greeks for barbarians north of the black sea (incidently even the term barbarian originated as one who doesn't speak Greek) -- the same term was used to call Aryanic, Turkic, Hurrian etc. peoples
The Elamites were not Semitic, neither were the Babylonians. They may have been related to the Dravidian peoples but they were definitely not Semites
The ancestors of the Persian people , the Pars came from what is now Uzbekistan, so no, no relation to the Elamites...
Wrong again, Hindu mythology is that man is descended from Manu
VERY incorrect. The Greeks worshipped Zeus. Jupiter was a Latin god
The etymology of the term Zeus is the same as the Sanskrit Dyaus Pitr (Heaven Father) or Deus in Latin
see post 4 for the correction
I said,”it is possible that the name Ripath is preserved in Europe...” I never said the Armenians are linguistically related to the Turks, as I know they are not, however the Turkik peoples and the Armenians both descend from Japheth, and yes are Indo Europeans.
Wrong about Turkic peoples
The real Turkic peoples are those in Tatarstan, in Turkmenistan, Uighuristan, Uzbekistan, Kirghizia, Kazakhstan
they are NOT Indo-european by race or by language
Early in the history of the world, the Japhethites, or Aryans, split into two groups. One group settled in India and the other group in Europe. Together they form what is known as the “Indo-European” family of nations. Any ethnographer is familiar with these divisions, but they are the same basic stock. The next time you visit India you should realize that you are visiting your cousins in the same basic family. The interesting thing is that both of these divisions, the Indian and the European, trace their ancestry back to Japheth. This is not from the Bible, but from history:
The Greeks say that their ancestor was a man named Japetos, and you can see in that the resemblance to Japheth. They regarded him as not only the father of their race, but the father of all humanity. The Indians, on the other hand, have an account of the flood similar in many respects to the Biblical account. The name of their hero is not Noah, but Satyaurata, and he had three sons. The name of the oldest was Iyapeti (you can see Japheth in that, very easily), and the other two were Sharma, and C’harma (Shem and Ham). The interesting thing about the Indian account is that C’harma was cursed by his father because he laughed at him when he got drunk, a certain echo of the story we have in Genesis.http://custance.org/Library/Volume1/Part_II/Chapter2.html
Actually, that's incorrect.
The Indo-Europeans are spread from Maharashtra/Bengal to Iceland -- the two major trunks are the Centem and Satem languages -- and the Slavic languages (Czech, Polish, Russian, Bulgarian etc. ) are related more to the Persian and Indic language rather than the Celtic languages
And the hindu story of a flood has Manu, not Satyavarta. There is no Hindu mythology about Sharma शर्मा -- your link is wrong.
Actually they don't say that. They say their ancestor was Danae..
