Did Joseph Smith “boast in his own strength”?

It was God’s will that he die. Jesus had nothing to do with it,

According to Mormon historian Todd Compton, in his book In Sacred Loneliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith, Smith entered into the following polygamous marraiges:
In summary, out of Smith's 33 plural wives, twenty were under age 30 and thirteen were over age 30. A third of all the wives were married to someone else when Smith took them.
And it’s awfully “convenient” that you failed to mention the dozens, if not hundreds of reasons WHY that mob was storming the jail.

Joseph Smith did not die for his faith, like any
Biblical martyr.
1. He was in jail for destruction of private property.
2. He had an angry mob after him because of his running roughshod
over the rights of others.
3. He fired into the mob as it rushed his cell.
4. He caught return fire, while trying to leap out a window.
He was neither a prophet, nor a man of God, nor a martyr.
He was simply a vile man who started life deceiving
others that he could see below the earth using a
peepstone. He admitted he faked it to get money.
He pursued other men’s wives to add to his harem. They
understandably did not like this.
I am not mistaken about the man’s character - he
admitted this himself. Nor am I mistaken about the events.
I’ve read contemporaneous accounts.

He got there in the first place because he had an angry mob destroy the printing press of a dissident Mormon newspaper that accused him of systematic abuse of women, tyrannical control over his cult, amongst many other things. Then, just like Stephen the Martyr or Jesus himself, he goes down in a blaze of gunfire and... err, oh wait.
The secular view, written at the time, is that Smith died because the Mormons were not politically monolithic.
In all fairness, they were caught between two political factions, and both demanded the Mormon vote, “or else”. So after due consideration, Smith promised one of the factions the Mormon vote. And though encouraged to vote that way, enough Mormons voted for the other side that it split their vote, and created two political enemies.
While there was a lot more involved before things went to heck, that certainly got the ball rolling.
It should be noted that even today, while the majority of Mormons tend to vote conservative Republican, there is a minority that pretty much fill the spectrum of the political left, from liberal to barking Moonbat.
