Prayer to St Michael the Archangel
Pope Leo XIII

Posted on 09/29/2013 6:34:45 PM PDT by ebb tide

“O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Come to the aid of man, whom Almighty God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of Satan.

“Fight this day the battle of the Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in Heaven. That cruel, ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity.

“These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has been set up as the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be.

“Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious power of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly find mercy in the sight of the Lord; and vanquishing the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen. V. Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered ye hostile powers. R. The Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered the root of David. V. Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord. R. As we have hoped in Thee. V. O Lord, hear my prayer. R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Let us pray. O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as supplicants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin Immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious St. Michael the Archangel, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all the other unclean spirits who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of souls. Amen.”

Angels are all over the bible, so your point is?

We do not pray to them period.

Once all you Protestants agree on what you’re protesting, let me know.

No, Thomas...angels are not part of the Body of Christ.

The Body of Christ is all believers, born again and filled with the Spirit. The Body of Christ are those human beings redeemed by the blood of Jesus.

Angels are not included in the plan of salvation. They are God’s messengers and do His will on behalf of believers. Fallen angels cannot be saved or redeemed. Satan cannot be saved or redeemed.

Believers pray to the Lord AND IF the Lord decides to dispatch an angel to fulfill that prayer, they do. But angels do not make that decision and cannot run interference for you with God. They can no more do anything for you in direct prayer to them than Mary can.

Make ones petitions know only to Christ, and He will make them known to the Father, who then answers as He sees fit.

Sometimes I think Catholics have this huge song and dance with Mary and the angels because of a fear of coming before the Living God. And it is a very fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God when not redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.

Throw yourself on His mercy and you will not be cast out. Keep allowing angels, Mary, and other dead humans to usurp His place in your life and risk His wrath.

I think it has to do with monumental fear being instilled in them. They are not assured of their salvation, they cannot go directly to the throne of God and pray so they have a huge song and dance with Mary, dead people, and angels. They have a big list of MUSTS they must do....and on and on and on.

If that is their idea of God, then no wonder they dare not approach Him directly. It is as if they are children being told, “Just wait till your father gets home!!” I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near that kind of a father either.

Fear is an incredibly powerful motivator and will keep people in bondage their whole lives, so it is no wonder they have created this system of fail safes to allow them to approach holiness. They do not understand that a redeemed human is counted as worthy, by the blood of Christ, to approach God boldly and personally.

Once that realization dawns, there can be no going back to a circuitous route of dead humans and angels. God, please, in the name of Jesus, open all closed eyes and ears here to your Truth as I have just spoken it and as it is written in Your word! Amen!

Angels are not to be prayed to and we have made that pretty clear.

And if you can drop the catholic and protestant appellations for a moment, it will be much easier to see that.

As long as it continues to be catholics versus protestants, Satan has won.

However, your conclusion is based on a false premise, for writings were recognized as Scripture, versus those that are not, without any infallible extra-biblical authority. And that there were, as shown , is abundantly evidenced.

So your opinion of the canon of Scripture is infallible?

If not, whose?

I'm going with the Church that Christ founded.

Which canon of Scripture does the Bible tell us is the correct canon of Scripture? Luther's canon, the Catholic canon, or the Orthodox canon?

This isn't a complicated question, even though Protestants want to make it so.

A book does not determine its own table of contents. An editor does.

So your opinion of the canon of Scripture is infallible?

I hold as true that the 66 books are Scripture based upon evidence, as did souls who held the Torah, and the prophets, and the psalms (Lk. 24:44), were Scripture in the time of Christ, and thus believed in Him, not because of an infallible magisterium. But which does not mean i am infallible any more than the centurion was who confessed "truly this was the Son of God," (Mt. 27:54)

Nowhere is perpetual assured infallibility of men taught. Even a non-Christian can express an absolutely true statement based on evidence (there is a Creator), but which does not mean he is infallible.

The very doctrine of assured infallibility of men is not Scriptural, as that is an attribute of God. Inspired writers of Scripture were infallible when writing Scripture, but which was not assured whenever they spoke at large on faith and morals, nor were they autocratic authorities on Truth as Rome effectively makes herself, being a law unto herself.

Moses came the closest to being the authority Rome claims, but who was established as speaking for God due to His manifest supernatural attestation and consistency with Abrahamic faith, not formal priestly descent. And having first penned Scripture, it became the transcendent standard for obedience and testing truth claims, as is abundantly evidenced.

Assurance that Jesus was the Christ was based on Scriptural substantiation, and both men of God and the progressive establishment of writings of God were established as being of God due to this.

I'm going with the Church that Christ founded.

So according to your fallible opinion out of all the churches Rome alone is the one true infallible church. Thus you compete with the EOs, the Mormons, etc and all the sola ecclesia groups who make themselves the supreme authority on Truth. Moses and the apostles overcame the competition by supernatural manifestation of the truth, but Rome's gospel manifests spiritual deadness and overall liberalism, while the basis for assurance of truth for RCs is the premise of Rome's infallibility (versus the objective examination of Scriptural substantiation), which she has infallibly declared herself to be. Thus so many of her apologists engage in declaring truth by assertion, like their master.

Your post is no more an argument than your redundant use of your two pictures. And I have even more on the Mary of Catholicism .

It's a valid point. I see nothing in this entire thread but potshots at Catholics by Protestants who still can't agree on what they're protesting, whose version of scripture is right, and whose interpretation is the most correct.

Yet, y'all want to paint Catholics with the same arguments that continue to fail on the surface. As it's been pointed out before, this prayer, like so many others, calls on Mary, the Saints, the angels, and in this case St. Michael the Archangel to intercede to God on our behalf.

Wishing that away doesn't change what the prayer does.
