Another Poll Confirms...
SIMON LEADS DAVIS
(SIMON: 44.0% - DAVIS: 37.8%)

SACRAMENTO - Another post-primary election survey shows that Governor Gray Davis trails Republican nominee Bill Simon in the race for Governor.

A survey of 825 California voters "somewhat likely" to vote in the November 2002 General Election (conducted by Probolsky & Associates Opinion Research) found that Governor Davis attracted the support of only 37.8% of voters - an abysmal reading for an incumbent Governor seeking re-election. Davis trails Simon (as he has in all other post-primary polling that has been conducted) by over six percentage points. Simon attracted the support of 44% of voters in the Probolsky poll.

These results mirror a Public Opinion Strategies poll taken in mid-March, which showed Simon with a 48%-41% lead over Davis. The Probolsky Poll was conducted April 2 through April 4, after nearly a full month of Davis trying to change the subject from his failed leadership in energy, education and the budget by demonizing Bill Simon. The poll shows Davis' strategy has utterly failed.

Both polls showed that more than 50% of respondents had an unfavorable perception of Governor Davis. The Probolsky poll indicated 53.0% of respondents viewed the Governor unfavorably while the Public Opinion Strategies poll showed 55% of California voters held an unfavorable opinion of the Governor.

"For Governor Davis to have more than half of the electorate already viewing him unfavorably demonstrates the permanent and fatal damage that his failed leadership has done to his political aspirations," declared Simon for Governor strategist, Sal Russo.

"Davis knows he cannot run on his abysmal record of failures in energy, failures in education and failures in the state's budget and economy. This leaves him the only choice of waging a smear campaign against Bill Simon. But when he does, the negative backlash in response to his sleazy tactics will only drive his awfully poor poll numbers even lower," Russo added.

I wonder if Davis will get the undecideds with the "abortion" boogeyman. After all, this is California.

We need to get a green party candidate in there. Simon can hold his own at 44%. The key is keeping Davis down below that.

Davis will get at least 43% of the vote. That's a fact, it's not going to change. The 43% are the hardcore liberals, the people in California who will never ever in a million years mo matter how liberal Richard Riordan is will never ever vote for a Republican.

That being said, Bill Simon can win head-to-head with Gray Davis. The abortion this is failing Davis. People don't care about abortion, and I think that his harping on it is making them some feel guilty for their pro-choice position (good, old-fashioned Catholic guilt works wonders!). They may not become pro-life, but they don't want to be reminded over and over and over again that abortion on demand is legal throughout the entire nine months of pregnancy. It bothers them. I'm glad it bothers them.

The election is not going to be won or lost on abortion. The election will be won or lost on how well Bill Simon convinces the public at large that Gray Davis is a failed leader. Davis has failed on every important issue that has come down the pike. He IS a failure. If Simon can get that message out, and with it show that he is a smart, savvy, capable leader, he will win.

Go Simon!

Wow... Gray Davis can't reverse his deficit and its been a month since the primary? No fair guys. The "extreme" Bill Simon can't win a general election in California and everyone knows this!!! And Davis is surely asking can this guy really beat me??? Its a long way to November, but if I were Gray strategist Garry South I'd be getting the heebie jeebies now...

I tend to distrust/disbelieve polls, especially this far from the election. Go Simon!! All California Freepers need to go all out to get Simon elected. We can't get lazy just because some poll says he's ahead.

While, the results are nice to hear, I question the accuracy of the poll and would caution against putting too much faith in the results.

A survey of 825 California voters "somewhat likely" to vote in the November 2002 General Election....

A sample size of 825 is not a bad sample size, but I question what "somewhat likely" to vote means and how the sample was collected. However, most of the traditional survey's by telephone tend to over count democrats rather than republicans, so it is hard to say. While it beats a finding going the other direction, it is not a sure deal yet for Simon.

GO SIMON. Earth to Gov. Davis, start sprucing up your resume. Maybe you can get Clinton to mentor you for an investment banking/investment job! (Barf!)

Simon's six point lead in the face of being out-fundraised by twice as much by Davis is VERY ENCOURAGING! However, he needs to trump up these polls, demonstrate he is a serious candidate and use the momentum to equal Davis's massive fundraising efforts using a nationwide fundraising campaign if he wants to win this thing in November. If he does, it will be the greatest GOP victory of 2002 unless the GOP retakes the Senate 51-50 by a whisker.

Good news! However, we shouldn't underestimate Davis. He's got high negatives himself, but he's a master at boosting the negatives of his opponents and Simon is an unknown quantity to many voters.

It's going to get very ugly in the fall.

This race has a long way to go. Davis hasn't even begun to open up his wallet and pour forth the obliquy on Simon yet. It's a poor position to be in, having to say 'vote against that guy' rather than 'vote for me' but that's the tack Davis will take, and maybe he'll even succeed in making Simon look like Hitler redux. I hope Simon knows how to fight dirty, because that's what's it's going to come down to. On the plus side, the legislature looks like it's going to raise taxes bigtime, and if Davis signs on to it, people will remember. He's also started to tell the teachers that he might not be able to give schools the full complement of money called for under proposition 98, and that's going to tick some folks off. They might not vote for Simon, but staying home will be just as good.
