Majority of GOP thinks Obama wants to impose Islamic Law?
The Washington Post's The Plum Line ^ | August 31, 2010 | Adam Serwer of the American Prospect

Posted on 08/31/2010 2:03:56 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Sam Stein points to a startling number in a recent Newsweek poll showing that 52 percent of Republicans think the statement "Barack Obama sympathizes with the goals of Islamic fundamentalists who want to impose Islamic law around the world," is either "definitely" or "probably" true. It's a mistake to impart too much meaning to a single poll result, but this is still a pretty strange result--and it may be a manifestation of what Julian Sanchez has termed "symbolic belief," simply saying you believe something as a matter of hyperbolic political expression, not because you really believe it.

However, I think the poll reflects, in part, the success of sustained efforts by conservative writers to make this exact case. This the "respectable" version of the "Obama is a secret Muslim smear," the argument that the president himself might not be Muslim, but that he sympathizes with "them." Since the sorts of people making this argument believe that Muslims are objectionable as a group, that's a problem. The poll result is also another example of the remarkable ability of the conservative base to hold two entirely contradictory impressions of a person at the same time--on the one hand Obama is a social libertine who wants to teach sex ed to children, end discrimination against gays and lesbians in the armed forces and allow women unfettered access to abortion, and on the other he's part of a global conspiracy to institute a repressive interpretation of Islamic law that would prohibit all of those things.

The bottom line, though, is that Americans don't have a very good understanding of what Islamic law is. As several writers have pointed out since the once-fringe theory that American Muslims are part of a large-scale conspiracy to institute sharia law in the United States went mainstream...

I take it the question mark at the end of the article’s title is a typo.

Look at Sharia law. Look at 0bama’s actions.

Well, add me to the percentage that thinks he wants to impose sharia.

Islam is very collectivist, very “leader-philiac” (we can all gather round and lick Bambi’s toes), and right up this nutcase’s particular alley. He’d be happy to impose sharia tomorrow if he thought he could get away with it.

The reason AIG was one of his first objectives was because it is the largest sharia compliant financial firm in the world. He needed to support it and own it.

If Obama were to impose anything, which would sound more accurate?

1. Obama wants to impose Christianity.

2. Obama wants to impose Islam.

If Obama wanted to impose anything, I can't imagine it being Christianity but ISLAM sure does sound an alarm!

This guy who does “The Plum Line” at Wash. Post could be on Daily Kos. Wash. Post is going downhill fast with their leftism, but even by those standards “The Plum Line” is exceptional.

Look at Sharia law

It appears they believe it is already in effect in America - fitting in (integrating) to American life and American ways appears to be not doable according to their attorneys.

Swift sued over treatment of Muslims at Neb. plant

Snip:

The tensions over prayer time at the Grand Island plant have been building since 2007. That was when East Africans began filling the gaps left after a 2006 immigration raid cleared illegal Hispanic workers from the plant.

The situation came to a head in September 2008, during Ramadan, when hundreds of Muslim workers walked off the job and picketed in protest, saying they wanted time to pray at sunset and break a daylong fast. Plant management responded the next day by adjusting the work schedule to accommodate them.

Non-Muslims - including Latinos, Sudanese and whites - counterprotested such accommodations, calling it special treatment that would burden the rest of the work force. Management then ended the accommodations, which sent Muslim workers back to the picket lines.

The company fired 86 Muslim workers for walking off the job. It eventually hired back about a dozen.

Good post, Moms.

I am looking for the origins of hate crime law, going back into the early 90s or into the mid-80s. Minority status of Muslims was in it early on. I am looking for Congressmen, organizational funding sources, quotes, etc. I am thinking CAIR, which means Muslim Brotherhood, probably just after 1979-80 & the Islamic Revolution. Let me know if you find something please.

Ahem! Congress passes laws, not the pres. If we get sharia, it will be congress' fault. But the Catch-22 is that Congress can pass no law that is not in pursuance to the Supreme Law, which is the Constitution/Bill of Rights.

If any proposed sharia law takes away the right or rights of even the least Citizen, it must be ignored and considered null and void, even if passed illegally by Congress.

And the Supreme Law, Constitution/Bill of Rights is superior to any E.O., treaty, executive agreements, etc., and don't let anybody tell you different.;

The Bill of Rights and Constitution is not set aside even if martial law is declared, regardless of what any fool tries to tell you.

Take up your arms! Our might is right!

I just want to emphasize what you said.

Since our Rights come from the Creator and the government exists and borrows power from the People, no dictator or rampant congress can legally assume these powers.

Now, we may be forced to take control of the country back by means of our unalienable right of self defense, We The People still hold all the legitimacy cards even in the face of tyranny.

This contradiction belongs to the left not the right. It is cheerleaders for the gay agenda, and every other left wing cause, that align themselves with those that would execute them for their lifestyle. Being apparent libertines has little to do with anything in this case. What binds the left to Islam is a hatred for individual liberties, property rights, and of course George W. Bush.

The left sees Islam as an ally in the struggle to dismantle Western Civilization. They are just too stupid and shortsighted to see that puts them smack dab in the middle of the stoning pit.

Obama is a secret Muslim.. that may be a smear but it's getting a lot of support from his acolytes.

Obama supporters calling the local and national talk shows I listen to regularly demand that Obama not be criticized. They are demanding nothing less than submission to give him "a chance."

Submission, ain't that Islam?

Thanks Combat_Boots!

Muslim immigration to the USA

Snips:
In the first wave, from 1875-1912, Syrian, Lebanese and Jordanian laborers migrated and became factory workers and peddlers. The first wave ended with the First World War. In 1924 the door to non-European immigration clanged nearly shut.

In the second wave, from 1930-1938, Arabs from across the Middle East arrive as laborers. The second wave was brought to a halt by the Second World War.

The third wave from 1947-1960: Palestinians, Egyptians and Eastern European Muslims arrive. Many were well educated.

The fourth wave from 1967-Present: In 1965 the Johnson Administration introduced many changes in the immigration laws that initiated the third wave of immigration, which continues to the present. Muslims from Asia (primarily the Indian sub-continent), the Arab world and Africa arrive. Most are educated professionals or come as students and remain. The number of Muslims in America was estimated at a quarter million by 1960, but it was only after the liberalization of immigration laws in 1965 that their numbers really increased.

Hate crimes against Muslims rare, FBI data shows

Jews, lesbians, gay men and Caucasians, among others, are all more frequently the target of hate crimes, FBI records show. Reported anti-Muslim crimes have declined over recent years, though they still exceed what occurred prior to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
