Paul Wins CPAC Straw Poll; Cruz Finishes Third
The Texas Tribune ^ | February 28, 2015 | Abby Livingston

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky won the Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll Saturday, his third victory in as many years.

This year he carried 26 percent of the vote. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz placed third, with 11.5 percent, while former Gov. Rick Perry came in eleventh, with 1.1 percent.

Both Paul and Cruz openly campaigned at the event. Cruz volunteers distributed custom-made buttons that said "Cruz Crew." Perry had a smaller get-out-the-vote operation at the conference.

The contest comes after three days of speeches from presidential contenders and noteworthy conservative activists. On Thursday, Cruz touted his battles within the GOP, while Perry attacked President Obama on foreign policy.

If cruz is in striking distance when debates happen he will crush his rivals there.

His debate skills are extraordinary.

It’s the Paul schtick to win these things with huge crowds of nothing-else-to-do potheads.

Honestly Jeb has very little grassroots support. The conservatives hate him. He is pathetic in questioning. I believe the guy is a one debate pony. Walker whether you are high on him or not is going to eclipse Jebbie very shortly.

“Cruz is for letting the states legalize pot if they choose.”

You say that like it’s a bad thing...

(Hint: It’s not.)

0.1% is about 3 votes. He might have sent a few of his cabana boys to represent.

But Paul is young and in 8 years will have the momentum for the top spot.

Romney Wins Conservatives’ Straw Poll

By Michael D. Shear
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, March 4, 2007

Presidential candidate and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney yesterday won a straw poll of conservative political activists gathered in Washington, a very early indication of how an important Republican constituency might vote.

Romney was the first choice for the GOP nomination, with 21 percent of the 1,705 activists who voted at the 34th annual Conservative Political Action Conference. Former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani came in second with 17 percent, and Sen. Sam Brownback (Kan.) was third with 15 percent.

Rounding out the top five were former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson (6 percent), New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (6 percent) and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (5 percent). Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who delivered a lenghty speech at the conference on Friday night, each received 4 percent of the vote. (Notably, Christie did not attend CPAC.)

Walker and Cruz are miles apart...Walker is big gov’t, pro amnesty, big money, big business...

Cruz is pro Constitution, pro-America...

They are water and oil...
