Are the Simpsons Conservative or Liberal

Ok, I know that I am extremely late to the party...but I have to admit it...I have become a hardened fan of (bite lip and hope for the best) - "The Simpsons". I had never watched on a regular basis for the majority of the time that they had been on the air. Then I interviewed the author of "The Gospel According to the Simpsons" last year. The interview was ok as interviews go but in the author's telling of HOW the episode is put together each week fascinated me. Each epsiode take possibly up to 3 years to put together. Most episodes utilize more than 100 writers and the writing pool is equally divided up: 1/3 Jewish, 1/3 Christian, and 1/3 fill in the blank. The Simpsons, unlike many other TV families do seem to have a profound ability to endure the hardships of life and even underscore some of the most decent of human virtues and values. All that being said, it got me thinking, watching, and now I'm hooked...

Yes, another one of my favorites. My brother and I consistently do the Sideshow Bob's grumble sound as he repeatedly stepped onto the rakes. Another great scene from that episode is when the FBI guys are trying to get Homer to understand about his new name. When Homer leans over to one of the guys and whispers, "I think he's talking to you," I burst out laughing every time. As a matter of fact, I'm laughing right now.

I agree, though, that it's hard to pick a favorite. As I was writing my above reply I kept thinking about all the others I really enjoyed: The Stonecutters, Homer's gaining weight to go on disability (Dr. Nick: instead of chewing gum, chew bacon)...

I love the Simpsons and I would have to put them into the Conservative column. Except for that brat Lisa...

I predict it will not be too long before Lisa comes out of the closet.

Maude's voice quit so they either killed her or changed her voice. I think the episode she died is one of the best.

In one episode, Bart and Lisa send in cartoon scripts for "The Itchy and Scratchy Show" in Grandpa's name because the production company would only accept scripts from adults. When money starts pouring into Grandpa's mailbox, Bart and Lisa try to convince Grandpa that they were the ones who actually earned the money.

Bart: "Grandpa, didn't you wonder why you were receiving checks in the mail for nothing?"

Grandpa: "I thought the Democrats were back in power."

I am one of the biggest Simpson's fan on FR.

The Simpsons in my opinion are neither Conservative or Liberal and that is what makes this show great. Nobody and I mean nobody is immune from ridicule, especially Unitarians. The Bush 41/Dennis the Menace parody and the episode where Clinton tells Lisa that he is a lousy President show that everyone is fair game.

But the episodes with Clinton were full of absolute mocking and ridicule of him.

One of those episodes was a local re-run this week:

Bill Clinton: "You've taught kids everywhere a valuable lesson! If things don't go your way just keep complaining until they do!"

Marge: "That's a pretty lousy lesson!"

Bill Clinton: "Well, I'm a pretty lousy President!"

when Maggie goes thru the supermarket scanner (in the intro to every episode) the cash register reads "NRA4EVER."

I believe this is actually not true. I have the DVD of their first season and if I go frame by frame, its nothing more than a blur of words and I also heard Groening say he has heard the rumor about that and laughed but said that it isnt true.

I have the bottle opener, the board game, and a wide variety of paraphenalia. I do not have the video games. I have played them at friends homes and have never thought they were that great.

The Bush41 episode is one of my favorites.

Have you seen the shirt that has the Simpsons lined up like the Soporanos and has the "Simpsons" in script like the Soporanos? It is pretty funny.

I actually have two of the bottle openers and they say different things, I got both of them this summer for my birthday.

I wish they would have taken Ken Starr, and left the job to an open mind without an agenda. There was a lot of there there, and Starr missed nearly all of it.

I remember the Homer-joins-local-gun-club episode and he becomes a gun zealout. He starts using his gun for common uses like turning the tv off (permanently). The other members eventually strip him of his membership saying that gun ownership also includes responsibility.

Marge never liked the idea of a gun in the house so Homer agrees to get rid of it. Eventually, the Simpsons are robbed (i think) and Homer gets his gun (he decided to keep it but hide it from Marge) and protects his family.

Marge was shocked and angry that he had the gun but she realized that she needs to end her fear of the gun and learn the importance of protecting one's self.

I liked that episode.

What makes it so funny, we've all known somebody just like them.

A poster above this mentioned they thought the Simpsons had it in for organized religion - I don't think it's so much against organized religion as it is against commercialized religion. There is a big difference (in my thinking). We've all seen the mega Churches/services that serve more as a social gathering than an actual house of worship, and are more concerned with image than prayer.
