Is This the Death of the BCS? Oklahoma Loses!
Posted on 12/06/2003 8:29:48 PM PST by Lunatic Fringe
I cannot see how the BCS can send Oklahoma to the national championship game if the Sooners cannot even win their Conference championship.
It's time for a playoff system!

"I see no reason to think that a football playoff will settle anything. Someone will win the tournament, but that someone will rarely be "The Best Team in D1 Football." That is just the nature of the game, and why undefeated regular seasons are so rare."
A rare voice of reason is heard above the fray.
Even an undefeated season settles nothing.

Notre Dame is independent. They're too chicken to join the Big 10. I would hardly call ND chicken. They consistently have one of the toughest schedules in D-1 and they play several Big 10 schools on a regular basis. UM, MSU, Purdue. What they would LOSE is their lucrative contract with NBC and their ability to schedule several other big names schools every year.

However, we are secure in the knowledge that for the second straight year we have the best team at the end of the season. Last season? With all due respect, ummm, no you didn't. Ohio State has never been a media darling, and could arguably be called the "Rodney Dangerfield" of college football. However, I would think that even our biggest critics could not deny that we had a dream season, finishing 14-0 with a National Championship. And we didn't have to share it with anyone.

Given the chance, SC would have kicked that slow, unimaginative, and lucky Buckeye team's ASS six ways to Sunday last year. Just like they did Iowa, another Big ten juggernaut.

USC, No. 1 in both polls... no invitation to championship game. This is outrageous.

TIME FOR A PLAYOFF!!!! - My idea.
Teams should make it.
Top 3 - Big Ten
Top 3 - SEC
Top 3 - Big 12
Top 3 - PAC 10
Top 3 - Big East
Top 3 - ACC
Top 2 - MAC
Division winners - CUSA, Wac, MTN West, Sun Belt
24 Teams.
If there's an Independent team in the top 15, that school takes the place of the 2nd place MAC and 3rd place ACC in order.
Bracket 1 - Upper Midwest
Game 1 - Big 10 Champ vs 2nd Place MAC
Game 2 - Big East Champ vs MAC Champ
Game 3 - 2nd Place PAC 10 vs 3rd place SEC
Game 4 - Game 1 winner vs winner between games 2 and 3
Bracket 2 - Pacific
Game 1 - Pac 10 Champ vs MTN West Champ
Game 2 - WAC Champ vs 2nd Place Big 10
Game 3 - 2nd Place ACC vs 3rd Place Big 12
Game 4 - Game 1 winner vs winner between 2 and 3
Bracket 3 - South
Game 1 - SEC Champ VS CUSA Champ
Game 2 - ACC Champ VS 3rd Big East
Game 3 - Big ten Third vs Big 12 2nd
Game 4 - Winner of Game 1 vs 2/3 winner
Bracket 4 - Central
Game 1 - Big 12 Champ vs Sun Belt Champ
Game 2 - 2nd SEC vs ACC 3rd
Game 3 - PAC 10 3rd vs 2nd Big East
Game 4 - Winner of Game 1 vs 2/3 winner
Week 1 - Games 1, 2, and 3. - 1st Week December
Week 2 - Winner of 2 and 3 play. - 3RD Week December(2nd week is usually finals)
Week 3 - Game 4 - 4th Week December
Week 4 - Brackets 1 and 4 play, 2 and 3. - 1st week of January or 5th weekend December(depending)
Week 5 - Championship week, possibly a Big 10 vs PAC 10 or SEC/ACC vs Big 12 Showdown if the first place teams get through. - 1st or 2nd Weekend January.
I thought about a 4th team for Big 10, 12, and SEC instead of the 2nd MAC or 3rd ACC(2nd CUSA could be a good replacement too), but any team that doesn't finish 3rd in their division doesn't deserve to get in, and all division winners should get in.

Having a bit of the "BCS blues" tonight, are we?
The Big 10 has, I believe, 7 teams going to bowl games? Pretty impressive stuff.

"Damn straight. Vegas says SC beats LSU by 7."
Too bad a playoff system or logic will never get to prove that right or wrong either way. Once again, the BCS screws a team. My team got it 3 years ago. Now, USC gets it. Lets see the truth. If money talks, then the BCS will die and a playoff system of 8-10 teams will be born. LET CAPITALISM RULE DAMN YOU NCAA!!!!!

Welcome to politically correct playoff systems. When capitalism rules again, and the $20 Billion dollar 10 team playoff emerges, the NCAA will finally (hopefully) get their heads out of their proverbial anal cavities.

"Damn straight. Vegas says SC beats LSU by 7." You may know somebody by the name of Vegas. But I've never seen the Sports Books in Las Vegas lay a line on an event that isn't going to be played.
If they did I'd put up the mortgage taking the points, because Southern Cal won't beat LSU by anything, so I'm gauranteed to win!

"I love a perfectly constructed sentence. Thank you." But is it a perfectly constructed sentence? As I understand it "down the road" would be South and "up the road" would be North in which case USC will have to travel "up the road."

Butt, in San Francisco, "up the road" takes on an entirely different meaning ...

Notre Dame, because they're independent, also plays Army, Navy, and several other un-ranked lower-tier teams every year.
ND is usually ranked BSCAUSE of reputation and tradition, not from performance.
(Notice, I did say "usually"!!!!!)

I look forward to the Ohio State-Kansas State matchup in the Fiesta Bowl. I was dreading the thought of having to listen to the pre-game rantings of Kellen Winslow Jr.

If you want everything cut and dried, go watch the (boring) Sunday game. You can't be serious. What could be more boring and anti-climatic than the current beauty-contest method of deciding the championship of college football? One bad day in September pretty much renders the rest of your season meaningless. Teams pretty much take December off to prepare for meaningless and pointless bowl games, when they could otherwise be engaged in a high drama tournement to crown a real champion.
That Rams/Patriots Super Bowl a few years ago was a real snoozer wasn't it? The Pats/Raiders game in the snow a few weeks earlier was totaly devoid of excitement too. Let's go watch the Alamo Bowl.

Huh? Who has USC played this year? Let them play a full SEC schedule and see how they do.
I suppose Lousiana Monroe is a real tough opponent huh?

The Cats get zero respect. They have been playing the best football in the NCAA for several weeks. Anyone who doubts it should go play Nebraska in THEIR house even on a "down" year like this. Nobody else is going to hold OU to seven points this year OR next year.

Navy has a bowl berth this year.
