"They are his blunt affirmation that he has fought in a war worth fighting against an uncivilized enemy that deserves to be destroyed."
Amen! If the left had its way we'd have an army of women and homsexuals doing lunchroom and redecorating duty around the world. I wonder how many hours we'd last after that.

I'm just thankful that there are gallant people like the General to fight the battle that I'm unable to.

But it also needs leaders who are fighters. Those who will kick down the door. Those who will get the job done. As we have observed here before, all the niceties of democracy and civilization depend from time to time on a few men who will go down dark streets and do uncivilized and possibly undemocratic things we would rather not think about, let alone talk about Couldn't be better said, I admire that in a soldier.

With the type of press our forces have received recently, Jack Nicholson's soliloquy keeps rattlin' around in my head. I know it was Hollywood, but it was spot on.

General Mattis' critics are the sort of people who get vicarious pleasure out of knowing some Afghan thug has been slapping around women for 5 years!

Actually, it's quite fun to fight'em, you know. It's a hell of a hoot. It's fun to shoot some people. Doesn't sound right.
Any WW II Vets feel the same way? Was WWII fun?

As I wrote before in another thread on this topic:
I wouldn't have said that it's "fun" to shoot people. What I would have said was, "I get a great deal of SATISFACTION from shooting some people."
Nevertheless, as a former US Naval Officer, I salute General Mattis, and would be proud to serve under his command.

I know some WWII vets whose worst life experience was saving some SS camp guards from their surviving Jewish prisoners.
One would imagine that lasted about 10 minutes and then they gave up, but I didn't ask.

Was WWII fun?Being in trenches, soaking rain, artillery coming down on ya, time in the field hospitals, on patrol... probably not. But what about just one specific part of war: shooting people. You should ask WWII vets if shooting Axis soldiers was fun. Most of them would say no, but I'll bet there's a few who enjoyed it.

I think when one is winning and feels strongly and is a Warrior,,,it is fun as hell and they don't want to do anything else.
The ordinary soldier, probably not.
He used a poor choice of words but the man is not a literary figure or scholar. He is a warrior and I will cut him some slack.
