Now listen to me... I'm gonna say this one more time... I did not have sex with that demon.

CHAKE CHAKE, Tanzania (Reuters) - Mohammed Juma starts to sweat and fidget as he recalls his rape by Popo Bawa, the most feared spirit-monster of the Zanzibar spice islands.

"We believe reading the Koran is our only defense, nothing else," says the 41-year-old driver and father of four. "But Popo Bawa is real, and well prepared."

And remember campers, all cultures are equally valid /SARC

Seriously, anyone else want to make heads or tails out of why REUTERS is reporting Boba Wawa completely credulously?

Yep, the Popo Bawa is Bubba in disguise. This story reminds me of those women several years ago willingly had sex with a masked intruder. The intruder didn't hurt them at all. I believe this took place in one of the southern states.

...placing charms at the base of fig trees or sacrificing goats to avert evil or draw favor from the spirit world.

There is a mistake right there---you don't negotiate with demons.

But no placatory offering or witch doctor can deflect Popo Bawa when he has made his mind up to strike, islanders say.

Actually, there is something to deflect this. I believe anyone who has the Holy Spirit can never be possessed or attacked in this way. Christians can come under attack from evil, but not directly as in the case of these poor people.

I remember a story in college before I became a Christian. There was a girl from Haitii who was putting a curse on another girl who lived upstairs. She had a bunch of stuff on the floor--a circle and all kinds of things--candles, water, bones, etc. In the middle of the circle was the girls name. Later, this same Haitian girl said she was going to put another curse on her roommate, who was a devout Christian. The Haitian girl got very upset because she said the curse would "not work, and it is upsetting the spirits very much why I try it."

I know this sounds crazy to many of you--but it is true. I do believe real evil exists out there.

Few readers of The Economist, one would imagine, have seen a one-eyed dwarf with bat-like wings, pointed ears and sharpened talons. Even fewer are likely to have been sodomised by one.

No wonder these places have such a hard time climbing out of the stone age.

This is just like the "an alien abducted me in my sleep" people.

Incubus and succubus, indeed.

LOL I think it is that stuff they chew (kak, or gak or whatever)

"the monster and his unnatural lust"

Why are they putting an anti-gay spin o this?? Certainly they do not believe sodomy to be unnatural, and it appears to be completely natural to Popo Bawa. Why are they passing judgment on demon sex?

This article touches so many liberal third rails it probably fried their brains - religion, moslems, third world cultures, homosexuality.

"We believe reading the Koran is our only defense, nothing else,"...

If you're in such a state where only reading the Koran will save you, you've got more problems than just a sex-crazed spirit.
