A suicide car bomber slammed into a U.S. military convoy in Fallujah, killing two Marines, a Pentagon spokesman said Friday. Three Marines and a sailor were missing after the attack.
CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin reports that five female Marines are said to be dead, according to officials. They are members of a supply unit who were being driven into Fallujah to assist in searching local women for hidden weapons when their vehicle, which was equipped with armor, was struck by the bomber.
Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said another 13 Marines were wounded in the Thursday night attack and said some women were among the casualties.
The car bomber targeted troops assigned to the II Marine Expeditionary Force, an earlier military statement said. Fallujah, the Anbar province town 40 miles west of Baghdad, was the scene of a large-scale campaign in November by U.S. troops to rout militants.
An earlier report also had said six Marines were killed.

I posted this time, because of the sadness I felt when I read the article, then questioned in the post why I felt compelled to do it when the headline said "women"---I notice another poster also questioned his/her motives...
However, you always ruin every thread you go on...so I won't be participating with some of the other thoughtful freepers on this thread...and I am sure you will laugh and be proud of yourself....have fun!

Yes, that is true. In fact, the Israeli army still puts no women near the front lines. This includes truck units that go anywhere near the front. You can do that when everyone is serving who is physically capable; you can select the best instead of bribing the willing.

As a semi-professional psychoanalyst (I only do it at the local watering hole on weekends), I believe I can explain the strange sense of confusion you're feeling.
You're under the delusion that anything nasty that happens to a heterosexual, white, Christian male is somehow wrong, when the experts on such topics as feminism, gender and race studies, and the crowd at the Berkeley Faculty lounge have stressed that this is certainly not the case. For nearly 4 decades, no less. You would have known this if you watched Dan Rather. Should something nasty happen to the aforementioned straight, white, christian male, then that is merely his just desserts, as he has a historical (if not litteral) responsibility for centuries of oppression, slavery, rape, plunder and imperialism against the defenseless non-white, non-straight, non-males who managed to somehow find themselves stranded on the planet with us. One may escape the criminal justice system, but Cosmic Justice wins out in the end.
On the other hand, if heterosexual, white, christian males should do something nasty to a memeber of another group, preferably non-white, non-males, then he is to be called a Nazi, Fascist, Barbarian, Republican and worst of all, Conservative. This is merely to let people elsewhere know that he is not a very nice person. He is then supposed to be dragged through the legal system which will systematically sever him from his property, his funds, his pride and, ultimately, his sanity. Once this has been achieved, we'll all be equal (or at least equally miserable).
Finally, should something happen to a non-male in general, and non-white male specifically, then that person is to be raised upon a pedestal, mourned with a fervor not usually seen outside of a Nuremburg rally, and have their (usually) minimal achievements held up as some sort of shining example. Of what, is open to debate.
I hope this clears things up for you.

What stress? Behave honorably and chivalrously, and if they, individually, can't handle that, it demeans them, not us.
You can expect performance of a job they have taken on regardless of gender and still treat a lady like a lady.
But frankly, in some jobs, that will not work, and combat is one.
Men should not spend their time fretting about catering to political correctness and just be ourselves--the men our grandfathers taught us to be.

So you are saying we should recreate a government in the image of Saddam? Would that make coalition troops the new republican guard? Sorry I've got to say your plan sucks - we aren't living in roman times anymore (although the terrorists are).
I agree, apache escorts would be a good thing for our convoys. There's too much of this homicide bombing going on. Something has to change concerning our military procedures, because our people are sitting ducks over there.
Women should not be in the military.
But that's just an opinion.
