Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

I felt this way with the pre-hype on Ivan and it wasn't as big as had been hyped.

This one will do damage, I believe, but not as much as is being hyped now.

I'm all for keeping this a hurricane thread...but, like a poster mentioned, LIVE threads that are dealing with high stress levels tend to end up with recipe talk...

Therefore, to me, it is comforting to see the recipe talk...it would make me MORE nervous if it weren't here..

We all know these are high stress level threads, and I see nothing wrong with having a distraction here and there (as in recipe and song stuff), because we all know we're just anxious for the end results...

I'm concerned for relatives in Mississippi...

For anyone wanted to get a feel for early NO (1840) I recommend the Benjamin January mysteries by Barbara Hambly. When I hear about the possibility of toxic flood waters I remember reading about the yellow jack plagues, with bodies simply thrown over the walls of the cemeteries, stacked six feet high... and the constant floods. And speaking of floods, I remember trick or treating in flood waters in Houston in the fifties... I can't believe our parents let us out.. rats and water snakes come to mind.

I heard him say up to 50,000 could lose their lives. I don't know if that is possible but what do I know.

Was listening to the radio this evening...One "expert" pointed out that many people do not own cars and are unable to move to higher ground.... An oceanolgist said he expected the majority of non sky scraper building would be completely submerged. My step daughter and neighbors are resolved that their homes will be a total loss....They're between the Lake and French Quarter.

I'm wondering -- is there a thread on Free Republic for folks outside the immediate area impacted by the hurricane who would like to offer temporary shelter & assistance for the people who have evacuated ? A lot of them do not have any place definite to go -- and a lot of the hotels/motels west & north are full up -- or the people barely had the money to buy gas & get out, not enough to pay for hotel room & food.

I see that some of the liberal blogs and websites are taking posts from people offering shelter -- I'm sure we conservatives are equally generous as those #$$%^E& libbies.
