Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

I guess that tomorrow night these pictures will be what New Orleans "used" to look like:

Godspeed to all in New Orleans and any other locale affected by this hurricane. I'll be following this closely. Hundreds of millions of people in the US, Canada and around the World will be praying for all affected souls.

Moore tornado went five miles north of where I live -- Norman had no damage but we were surrounded by damage.

That tornado damage is going to look small compared to this hurricane hitting over night.

The Red Cross here in Norman had cars there this afternoon which is highly unusual. Imagine they will be leaving sometime tomorrow to help out.

Anyhow, are we the only ones, or are we just mean, cynical conservatives?

I haven't made up my mind on that, as weird as that sounds. I lived through Charley, Frances and Jeanne last year, and remember all too well how badly the media over-hyped the death and destruction. They seemed positively giddy about reporting that people were going to have their homes blown into kindling. So I do think they're doing this again.

But then I look at the forecasts and the data on this monster, and I just don't know. Charley was the worst of the three storms for me last year, and it was a baby compared to this thing, depsite the unbelieveable damage it did down in SW Florida.

Why are you ruining a perfectly good receipe with tomato? I love tomatoes, but on the side.

I don't think he was sent there to report. I got the impression this afternoon, that he may have been there on a weekend vacation.

Not a vacation - he is there to report. Fox even reported when he was enroute into the city.

My guess is he is there for the overnight live work (if they have equipment working)

There is wind. Some of the webcams are rocking and rolling.

Will see how high the water gets and how long the cams are on. Man, I hope these newscasters are all wrong.

Some swimming pools by the sea are salt water pools, not chlorinated

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info and for the story of the dolphins being kept safe.

Man, there is some seriously expensive merchandise in the shops in the French quarter... I'm remembering a desk in an antique store priced at $40,000.00 and it was huge.

We can speculate all we want to on the dome. The fact is that those people are in there now and CAN'T move. The best thing we can do now is pray for them.

I thought the Kyoto Treaty banned hurricanes. It must be Jeb Bush's fault for letting it get past Florida...
