Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

Your command of english is appropriate also. I will only tell you what to do if you get in my way. Stay out of my way, here and in the real world.

Ok, stop with the recipes, already, or I am going to be calling my mom with a wish list! ; ) Good luck with the storm, tonite. I'll be thinking of all of you that could be impacted.

She did thank him, but at the same time had to throw in the comments on how the government kept refusing to expend Federal Treasure to do something about the barrier islands that have been going away (at an amazing rate)...

"You would think they would have insurance on that stuff."

Most of the insurance companies probably will not pay (or at least not pay full value) because they won't be able to.

After the San Francisco quake of 1906, the companies just refused to pay.

No insurance company can afford to pay for the destruction of an entire city.

So, those who have antiques, stores full of goods, etc., will probably not be able to collect anything from insurance.

The government will offer loans, but that won't replace
valuables.

Speaking with way too much hurricane experience...once the rush to finish hurricane preparation is complete, there is little else to do but wait, FReep, and watch the radar blip around hour after hour until the electricity goes out. Talking about red beans and rice and Hershey's kisses are, frankly, necessary.

So true.

"Yes they traveled in a caravan and are in Mississippi. Got a motel room for a week ....with three dogs and two cats...."

Thanks for the info, and I'm glad they used John Kerry's advice and "they had a plan". Looks like they brought some rascals with them too...

My husband's family live in Mustang and Moore. He has told story after story about tornadoes as he was growing up. The one that sticks in his mind the most was the day that, President Roosevelt died, Tinker caught on fire and a killer tornado all at the same time, and he was a little boy home all alone with the radio on and ambulances go up and down the highway. His mother was working at Tinker and he just knew that she was in one of them.

Sorry, darlin - but the other chat helps relieve a lot of stress for people in the line of fire.

If it wasn't for the comic relief and recipes shared between reports I don't know how I would have lasted when Isabel was aiming herself at us here in Virginia.

Remember how Dan Rather used to love hurricanes?

I know on this board it might not be too popular to express sympathy for the guy (just because he tried to fabricate a news story to throw a Presidential election), but I bet at this moment he's cursing his retirement. He might even be on his way to New Orleans right now with a video-cam, looking to break back into the business.

"Take kraft italian dressing soak a tri tip in it for a few hours butterfly it BBQ to your taste"

sounds like a "speidi" but I'll bet most here never heard of marinating meat for several hours or days and then grilling it over a fire on a skewer......
