Category 4 Hurricane Katrina is approaching landfall in Eastern Louisiana. At 4:00AM EDT the storm's center was about 90 miles south of New Orleans.

Got a live report from my wife. (She's stationed at Keessler AFB and sheltered in the hospital)

She said about an hour ago that the entire base was under water to one degree or the next, the basement of the hospital had flooded and part of the roof had been damaged, generators are gone and it's pretty fierce...they are all on the 2nd floor of 5 right now and safe.

Please pray for her and her co-workers

Most of Terrebonne Parish without power

Thirty-five thousand homes and businesses were without power this morning, authorities said. It's not clear when crews would be dispatched to restore electricity.

Three-thousand people remain sheltered at 10 parish shelters, including the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, the East Park Recreation Center and several area schools. Those people won't be allowed to leave until authorities lift a curfew that went into effect at 8 p.m. Sunday.

How many people live in Sidell?

At least the 2 adults and four small children who slept on our sofabed and floor last night here in south Texas. They're OK for now. The parents are not as they know what to expect.

As of the 2000 census, the city slidell had a population of 25695.

I would venture a guess that he meant that the water went inland two miles, which would be about right for a surge of that magnitude - although Hurricane Belauh cut channels through Padre Island.

I can honestly say, in years and years of being a ham radio and weather geek, I have NEVER heard the NWS and the NHC saying some of the stuff they've said the past two days. That is absolutely chilling.

MSNBC reporter reprorting from Biloxi that the coastline has moved about 2 miles in.

MSNBC can't be right. Biloxi's on a peninsula that's not even 2 miles wide in most places.

nola did not miss the eyewall...that it missed the center is inconsequential..all this "jog" talk is ridiculous....the western eyewall went directly over nola.

the reason things are worse in miss is that populated areas are actually on the coast and received actual ocean surge...unlike new orleans which is not a coastal city.
