October 5, 2005 -- THE producer at the center of last year's "Memogate" scandal at CBS News says she was derailed by a vast right-wing conspiracy.
The producer, Mary Mapes, is one of four CBS staffers fired last January in the wake of the scandal.
She is convinced she was the victim of a group of loosely associated Internet bloggers "with a harsh political bent" who pounced on CBS News minutes after the airing of the now-infamous Texas Air National Guard story on "60 Minutes 2" in September 2004...
"Within a few minutes, I was online visiting Websites I had never heard of before: Free Republic, Little Green Footballs, Power Line," writes Mapes...
"They were hard-core, politically angry, hyperconservative sites loaded with vitriol about Dan Rather and CBS."
"This was something else, something new and fundamentally frightening," Mapes writes. "I had never seen this kind of response to any story.
"It dawned on me that I was present at the birth of a political jihad."

The political "Jihad" was perpetrated by the lovely Ms.Mapes and her willing dupe, Dan "What's the frequency" Rather.
They lied. WE caught them.
I can even tell my grand kids, when they ask what I did in the Great War, that I was the first to spot one of the tinier details in the forged Rathergate memos that helped prove they were forged.
They might not believe me, of course. After all, that would be claiming a very high honor indeed.

Were the documents ever checked physically to determine whether a typewriter was actually used? I bet CBS is not about to submit the orignal document(s) to closer scrutiny.

If they were "fair" they would say extreme left organization "moveon.org" or they would say left wing "codepink" or they would say Democrat Party NOT DemocratIC party. The surrest sign of bias or ignorance is the DemocratIC party adjective.

I, like many in here, am just tired of the "victim" rant by those on the otherside of the political spectrum.
It's seems their only goal is to complain rather than offer solutions.
In their small minds it's better to complain politically because they perceive the masses will identify with that and jump on the band wagon, which is just plain stupidity.
Mary Mapes, and her ilk, seem to have little regard for the truth or making this country a better place and that is absurd.
My grandfather was a pilot in the Airforce for over thirty years, and even active duty when I was a kid growing up. His was last stationed at Eglin AFB. He later retired to Ft. Walton/Shalimar beach area.
Jihad? Try resistance movement, for starters.
