Parents Group Warns Against 4 Fox Shows
Yahoo News/AP ^ | 10/19/2005 | Yahoo News/AP

Four Fox network programs, led by the comedies "The War at Home," "The Family Guy" and "American Dad," topped a parents group's annual listing of the worst prime-time shows for family viewing.

The Parents Television Council rated two aspirational reality shows, ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and NBC's new "Three Wishes," as the best programs for family viewing.

The group's president, L. Brent Bozell, said he was alarmed that the three Fox Sunday night comedies are being marketed as family friendly.

"Families should not be deceived," he said. "The top three worst shows all contain crude and raunchy dialogue with sex-themed jokes and foul language. Even worse is the fact that Hollywood is peddling its filth to families with cartoons."

When I was a little kid, my Mom used to watch Queen for a Day. I think it was a good show, but in today's environment would be canceled quicker than a Britney Spears' marriage.

And the DVDs. I have seasons 2 and 3 (didn't really care much for one). I will have to see if 4 is coming out soon...

I actually think American Dad is funny...not like Family Guy, but still good. The alien gets me in stitches.

I hated Futurama though, so I seem to be one of the rare people that doesn't like Futurama and Family Guy both.

I guess I should add that I sometimes like to think. I loved Sports Night, that short-lived comedy that really was more of a dramity than a comedy since it really wasn't funny, but I liked it anyway (in one Family guy episode, they mock it with a line that goes something like "I finally get Aaron Sorkin's Sports Night; it was a comedy that wasn't supposed to be funny"). I also admit to liking Murphy Brown (am a sucker for any comedy with a media setting regardless of politics due to my background...).

But, stuff like Married with Children and Family Guy is great as well.

Can't we like all types of comedy? I do and am as socially conservative as Bozell.

But, I also can think of no Biblical reason why saying the F word is a sin. Saying the Lord's name in vain is, but not cussing. Nor is a poop joke or two.

They could make shows with "Peter Gunn" and "77 Sunset Strip" cleanness and quality if they chose to...

He probably doesn't understand South Park. While I could do without the profanity, the shows are interesting. Tonight's was hilarious and absolutely ripped the Democrats about Hurricane Katrina.

The first 4 seasons or so were good. Once David Garrison left it seemed to just become sleaze for its own sake and the sum of its various running jokes meant to evoke Pavlovian hoots and hollers from the studio audience. At the start though it bore some resemblance to real life and the world of difference from other sticoms of the time was bracing.

Yeah, that is so funny, you jolly joker..

Same would apply to people walking down the street sticking porno mags in your face, you can just not walk down the street! Noone is forcing you to walk with your eyes open!

You clearly have freedom and anarchy mixed up.

Cartoons no longer mean they are meant for children. No kid is going to even get the humor on Family Guy or American Dad. Same goes for South Park and the Adult Swim lineup.

From the KJV

But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Colossians 3:8

Other versions use the words foul language or foul talk.

I don't generally quote scripture here, but it needs to be pointed out that there is indeed scripture that supports NOT using that sort of language. Of course, the Bible also instructs us to treat others kindly. Letting fly with the F word in public (as happens so often these days) in front of people who may well be offended, is not particularly kind.

I have seen those verses.

The problem is, what is filthy changes according to community standards. There is no "bad word list" in Scripture and no real way to determine if a word if filthy from Scripture. The only no-no is saying God's name in vain.

In the middle ages, the Church said it was cussing to say devil.

Do you honestly believe it to be a sin to say "what the devil?"

But, you have a good point about using the language in moderation. It IS sinful to use unsalty language in front of others who may stumble because of it.
