I agree that you not say anything. It will backfire and the parents will end up hating you and protecting their little darling. IF the kid were talking about murder.....that's another scenario.

Well, I'm not crazy and I don't live in PA, so I didn't see the news you are talking about.

I was kidnapped at gunpoint when I was a teenager (by a stranger). To the outside observer, I had plenty of opportunity to escape.

But the man told me that if I did anything like that, he would shoot the people around me. He even took me to a beauty salon to get a haircut (he didn't like my hairstyle). I went to the bathroom while I was there, and thought about leaving a note in there, but I was too scared.

Good thing, because the man went into the bathroom to check if I had done that.

He told me he would shoot the people in the beauty parlor or in the mall we were walking through. I believed him. He had a gun in his hand, inside his coat pocket.

But to an outside observer, we had been to a mall and to a beauty salon -- there must have been something I could have done at that point. I couldn't take the chance the man would shoot a bystander because of my trying to escape.

I got away in the end, unharmed.

Because of my experience, I'm loathe to judge another person's behavior in a hostage situation (if Kara was a hostage), until the facts come out.

There is a big difference between a 14 year old and an 18 year old.

And that's why we have statutory rape laws. It doesn't matter if she gave her "consent" to the sexual activity. The law (rightfully) presumes that she is incapable of grasping the circumstances and consequences. The moment this 18 year old began getting physical with her, he became a rapist in the eyes of the law.

A t-shirt at a student conference said "I was gay. What were you?". It was inspired by Corinthians 6: 9 - 11 ... and such were some of you. The list of what we were is quite inclusive, and acc. Eph 5: 5, needs to be taken seriously. I say this to encourage those parents, and their son. We are all in it together: all need forgiveness, and all need to walk in the light day by day.

'I mean, I can't see telling my kids "don't secretly date anyone or your Dad and I may be murdered". '

lol. Actually, we'll be adding this to our list of reasons "why not" . . . they'll laugh and roll their eyes, but it underscores the "why's" we've already given. This truly is a cautionary tale.

"It is Ludwig himself whom I can't figure out."

Narcissistic, immature . . . What did he figure would happen after he'd shot her parents? What on earth was that about? It doesn't make sense, no matter what else was going on. I've not seen anything about his family.

His family is keeping a no profile in this case! His parents weren't there when he went to court yesterday. He now has a public defender. No use in his parents throwing good money away on a high-priced attorney.

They must be devastated right along with everyone else. They probably had no idea their beloved son would do something like this. Probably afraid everyone will blame them for unleashing this monsterous child. Not to mention the criticism that will be engendered by the many pictures Ludwig posted of his hunting activities, complete with beer and gutted deer.

I wonder if they knew Ludwig was secretly dating Kara and whether they knowingly facilitated that in any way.

Any man, regardless of age, who pursues an underage girl in secret and encourages her to sneak and defy her parents is engaging in anti social or sociopathic behavior. It's a pretty good indicator right there that he is "off" and could be dangerous.

Parents should tell their kids to not date people who encourage them to defy and break rules and be secretive, because people who do those things are destined for tragedy one way or another and it is better to not travel their path with them.

Teach your kids to identify pathological people early in life. It only takes basic logic and attention to detail. Fact is parents often focus on teaching their kids to be pleasant, non-judgemental and accepting.

My oldest who is now a perscipacious 17 has gotten wisdom already by realizing that anyone who tells her that her parents "don't get it" is a) lying and b) selling something (i.e. seeking psychological advantage).

It is the first lie Satan told Adam and Eve; "God (your father) doesn't get it, he's depriving you of fun, he's only interested in himself, not your best interest". This great lie has never changed throughout the millennia and is the first lie people tell themselves or others when deciding to engage in behavior they know is wrong.

The fact that this poor girl couldn't predict the disastrous consequences her disobedience doesn't relieve her of the guilt and responsibility for that disobedience.

If we confess our sin, God is faithful and forgives us and cleanses us from unrighteousness. My guess is that her "counselors" will not encourage her to accept and own her part in this tragedy. Instead, it will be the plaint "It's not your fault, you couldn't know or predict such a thing would happen".

Well, I beg to differ, you can predict that the consequences of sin is pain and death. The only thing you can't predict is whether it is going to be immediately and total or cumulative and drawn out over time.

The reporting today is that these teens were trading nude pics of eachother on the internet. Just lovely.

Disgusting they are trying to make this a romance/love tragedy. . .and the girl a total victim here.

She is fourteen, granted. . .but yes; choices have consequences; so while perhaps never imagining the worst. . .she is still not just an observer here.

The real tragedy is not a passion out-of-control; but rather TWO parents dead; and three kids; left without a Mother and Father.

You're right, Doc. They are going to let her skate, I can sense it.

Not only are her parents dead, but she and her two siblings are orphans. I can't leave out the boy's parents. They have to be in shock at this time.

"All of this over a piece of ass", says my other half. What a waste all around.

All these lives basically destroyed and the boy can now spend the rest of his life being someone's "wife".. The death sentence would be better.

Two older brothers do not live at home.

I agree. And unfortunately, she really needs her mother now. She noted in her weblog (posted above by Gondring) several months ago how good it was to talk with her mother.

Teenagers are manipulative and totally self-absorbed, it goes with the territory. Also incapable of making mature judgments and understanding that consequences follow actions. Their brains simply don't function like adults. This is why parents pray when their teenagers take the car out -- just one example. All we can do is pray for the survivors and keep communicating with our own children.

Heard that last night... "inappropriate pics"...sex chat...long-term sexual relationship...

Also saw interview with a friend of Ludwig who said that he though Ludwig was just keeping up a facade of being Christian.

Is anyone taking bets? I'm figuring they turn the girl against the alleged murderer, since he's also seemingly a rapist, too, and let her go scot-free, even if she conspired.

I heard today on one of the cable news channels that he was sneaking into her room at night as well.

Have they reported yet where he got the gun?

Watch, the defense will come up with some drug he's taking that made he flip out.
