The real purpose of jacketed bullets used by the military is to wound the enemy. Myth. Nobody working on military ammo today is concerned about anything but "incapacitation" - FMJ is selected for reliable feeding in automatic weapons, and compliance with the law of land warfare.
You might win the battle if you leave combatants alive, but you will lose the war.

Can you imagine the tedium of hollowing-out enough bullets to equip the NYPD's 50,000 cops? That was hard work.

"There is no reason for anyone else to have that ability." Heh... can you believe that? People living in an apartment in NYC have no reasonable need to want bullets that won't travel through an intruder ~and~ the next three apartments before coming to rest.

That said, I carry EFMJs in both CCW guns, H&K .40 USPc and SA 1911.

XS>These are the same people that required Glock to put a 12.5 lb trigger on a gun which comes with a 5.5 lb trigger. TC>That's 'cause it helps with the accuracy, you see... ;-)
All mine work just fine with a 3.5lb trigger and are a lot more accurate.

Thanks. I'm curious of the damage they cause. I've heard stories but, not actually seen their aftermath. I remember when Dr's were screaming for them to be outlawed because of what they did to their fingers when they thought they were just taking out regular bullets.

You have to have a gun permit to buy them legally Not according to the sale I witnessed at a licensed gun shop here in Vegas... No question's asked.

"Which is why they are a favored choice for home defense use as well."
Agreed! My .357 is loaded with brass tipped hallow point Dots (I think that is the name). I spent the rdiculous amount because it was advertised to not overpenetrate. If I have to defend myself in my house or a convenience store, I do not want overpenetration (unless I can line the bad guys up.)

Cops favor using the hollow-point bullets because they are less likely to pass through a target and ricochet into a fellow cop or bystander. But they want their public sale banned to keep them out of the hands of thugs like Enchautegui's alleged killers, Steven Armento and Lillo Brancato.
"Cops want you untrained gun nuts to use bullets that will pass right through violent felons and kill innocent bystanders. Then we can pass more laws to take those away too. Friggin' gun nuts," stated retired Police Chief and aspiring Democratic city councilman Biff O'Flanahan. /sarc

I think you have to have a gun permit to buy any ammo (hollowpoints or FMJ) in NYC.

Exactly. hollowpoint, soft tipped, and expanding bullets are the safest choice for a self-defense shooter to have available, and the myopia of this suggestion, that someone defending their home has no need to be concerned about the same risks from 'overpenetrating' bullets that police would have is asinine.
No matter what the situation, the 'safest' bullet is the one that stops in the first thing it hits.

"Our mission is to stop violent felons," said Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch. "There is no reason for anyone else to have that ability." Would anyone want to wait around for an ignorant guy like this to protect you from violent felons?
If hollow points are necessary for the cops they're necessary for the rest of us.

Hollow-point bullets like the one used in the slaying of Officer Daniel Enchautegui are much deadlier than ordinary bullets - and nearly as easy to get. . . . An on-duty cop's bulletproof vest would likely provide the same protection from a hollow-point as a regular bullet. Was the officer not wearing his vest?

This is false. Here in Indiana I can buy any ammo in stock, no questions asked.
