But if John McCain has his way with his proposed rules for regulating political free speech on the internet, this is how we will be forced to operate in the coming election cycle and all election cycles in the future until we can get the unconstitutional McCain-Feingold act repealed.

I am not an overly religious person by some standards.

I got on the bandwagon w some others - we need to keep FR going, therefore, if it takes moving the server out of the country to do so, let's do it. However, we SHOULD NOT even have to consider that!
We are not deserters and are not going to flee the issue and run to Canada, the Bahamas or anywhere. As JR said - pitchforks and torches out!

I'm stunned! This can't be true!

There were several threads about it over the past six months or so, both Republicans (not all) and Democrats were wanting the FEC to regulate political speech on the internet, because as Howard Dean proved during his brief Presidential run, the internet can be as effective, if not more, than print and broadcast media.

Part of the problem compounding this, both sides have pushed or setup sites, or paid people to setup sites, that are advocating for or against a position or candidate, while not explicitly saying where the funding is coming from, i.e. acting like an independent medium, or they have had people go into other sites to post information or push candidates or positions that favored the parties.

It's very convoluted, and the scary part is, many of us would not be surprised to see the federal government go after sites like FR.

There was even a speech by a prominent Republican member of Congress (forgot who, it was a while back) where he attacked political sites on the internet, saying they were undermining the election process.

Part of me thinks both parties don't like unregulated campaigning on the internet by the other party (even if it's not official, but simply independent sites like FR or maybe a blog setup by you or I that pushes a certain position or whatever).

Another part of me thinks this is another way for both parties to join together to make sure that third parties don't gain any ground. We already see this when it comes to the debates, etc.

Let's see, we are rapidly turning into a surveillance society, we have a federal government that is spending more money than ever, we have a federal government that is trying to control more and more of the infrastructure that should be controlled at local levels (i.e. No Child Left Behind), we elect officials not because they are the absolute best candidate, but simply because we don't like the other candidate, we have a Supreme Court ruling that says private property is no long as sacred and absolute as it once was (if somebody else will pay higher taxes, they can have your land taken from you), and we have some powers that have been granted to the government (such as the PATRIOT Act) that will be abused to hell and back by liberals.

Are you sure that the America we once knew is not already dead or dying?
