Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people?
. . .
I do not believe I have proposed anything that is contrary to what has been considered Republican principle. It is at the same time the very basis of conservatism. It is time to reassert that principle and raise it to full view. And if there are those who cannot subscribe to these principles, then let them go their way.

Newt was talking to Hannity about this tonight and he was right -- this is EXACTLY what we need to do now.

Would that the next giant leader of conservatism on the level of a Reagan rise?

That's what we need more then anything.

We must be damn sure that the next republican prez canidate be cut of the same cloth as Reagan.

RE: "In another recent survey, of 35,000 college and university students polled, three-fourths blame American business and industry for all of our economic and social ills. The same three-fourths think the answer is more (and virtually complete) regimentation and government control of all phases of business—including the imposition of wage and price controls. Yet, 80 percent in the same poll want less government interference in their own lives!"

Let's see, in college in late 1974 or early 1975. Let's say for the sake of argument so as to average in undergrad and grad students, 23 years old. Add 32 years. That would make it, 55 years old. Now we see our current problem. Those same students who answered that way run both the private and public sector today. Especially the public sector, because a 1974 Lefty is highly likely to have become a lawyer then gone into politics.

The only problem is there are no more Ronald Reagans waiting in the wings to spearhead a conservative takeover of the country club.

That's a tall order. I think we only get a Reagan every hundred years or so, unfortunately. But you're right: We should certainly insist that the next one be MUCH closer to that ideal!

It's literally our last chance. Failing that, darkness will arrive.

I would say you are right. The British got lucky, they only had to wait a few decades between Churchill and Thatcher.

Sure there are. Pence is one, but he is in the House right now. Most say House members do not get elected. He is only one, there are others, the GOP just needs to put them forward, and not moderates.

What about Owens? I don't know a lot about him, but perhaps others do?

Thank You for posting this. It brought tears to my eyes. God, I miss him. But this speech, fitting as it is for today, tells me that Reagan still lives on today.

The best often rise to the occasion when things are dark.
Our troops give me proof of that.

People can become more then what they are.

Even politicians.

I dont expect a Reagan type to jump out at us and be obvious to us now. I do believe that a popular conservative leader can emerge.

We must not lose the white house in 2008.

I wish Reagan could come back. This is as fresh today as when he wrote it. I still miss him, didn't know him personally, but you know as a public figure I miss him.

Inflation has one cause and one cause only: government spending more than government takes in.

Every time I see this speech, I highlight the above line. Inflation is not caused by economic growth, low unemployment, or any of the other creative excuses given by the Federal Reserve.

It took a long time and a lot of hard political work to put together the Reagan coalition. But we could sure use him now...

Now, it is possible we have been persuasive to a greater degree than we had ever realized. Few, if any, Democratic party candidates in the last election ran as liberals. Listening to them I had the eerie feeling we were hearing reruns of Goldwater speeches. I even thought I heard a few of my own.

Amazing!

It's the same now as it was then.

He was the first President I voted for. His election in 1980 was the first politcal event I paid attention to. He'll always be "the" President of my lifetime. I honor his memory and accomplishments.

The best often rise to the occasion when things are dark.

People can become more then what they are.

I believe the three greatest politicians of the 20th Century were Reagan, Churchill and Thatcher. And all of them had been viewed as never having a chance before they took office and achieved greatness.

There is another great conservative leader out there and we will know it when we see it. What we need to quit doing is picking a person and trying to convince ourselves that they're "Reaganesque," that's what many tried to do with GWB, he is a good wartime president, he is not a great leader.
