If you have not heard this, you need to hear it. Yeah, I know, opera sucks. Well, it doesn't suck, I guess. I just never had any interest in it. But this is going to amaze you. What a Cinderella story. You will be moved and cannot help but to root for this guy, a guy Simon Cowell probably looked at as a total loser.

At 36, Potts is overweight, has not the best teeth, and lacks confidence. He was bullied as a kid.

Most human beings lead lives of quiet desperation. They never really feel that they have accomplished that which they think they could have accomplished.

Here is a guy with an amazing voice who has spent his time working for a mobile phone company to earn a living and pay the bills. At a You've Got Talent contest in Great Britain, he was discovered.

Some have expressed chagrin that he was a professional brought onto the show as a set up. It is true that Potts has had training. He insists, however, that he has never been paid for his singing. This really is a regular guy with a regular job who had a dream. After the exposure, that dream is going to come true.

Paul Potts participates on this mobile phone forum. A friend of his posted this thread to give his workmate encouragement.

In case you've missed it our very own Pottsy12, better known as Paul Potts from ITV's Britain's got Talent has been amazing the country with his fantastic opera performances.

We've posted this thread for everyone to add a quick note of support and let him know that you will be voting for him in the final on Sunday 17th June.

Most of us know absolutely nothing about opera. Maybe it is not that good for people who know the opera world. But for the rest of us, it is inspiring. A guy who looks like a loser blows them away.

Perhaps just as Tiger Woods created new interest in golf, perhaps this ordinary guy will create new interest in opera.

If your old enough you probably remember the opera on radio sponsored by Texaco.

When I lived in Northern Alaska in the 60’s and 70’s we used to receive one station only out of the Northwest Territories of Canada.

Every night for an hour or so we would listen to opera sponsored by Texaco.

I am not equipped to fight or argue classical music with any, but I do know what I like whether anyone else likes it or not.

I like the way this guy sings just because he seems to have a pleasant voice.

But this is about more than technical expertise. This is about hitting the right emotional resonance. This guy isn’t perfect but something in his voice reaches in and grabs your heart. Andrea Bocelli is similar—tho’ maybe better. And it isn’t just about him singing, it’s about such a dweebie little guy doing something wonderful for once in his life.
It’s about the judges’ reaction—the crowd’s response—it’s the little guy making good. Our favorite fairy tale.

My son teaches voice and opera performance on Broadway.

He has studied classical opera in some of the most expensive schools on the East coast.

When he comes for a visit we have long conversations about what is good and bad.

He likes classics and I like oldie but goldi classics.

To those who say this guy can not sing or does not have a good voice well I just point out another guy who can not carry a tune in a bucket Bob Dylan.

I believe Dylan has made a pretty good living with not having that good a voice.

If you want to indulge in the “Tiger Woods Syndrome” then you should follow Lewis Hamilton at his weekend’s Formula 1 US Grand Prix.

Hamilton, an articulate, manicured, well groomed rookie has taken Motor Racing by storm this year. He has been on the podium of all six races of the F1 Championship to date, gaining his first win last weekend in Canada on a circuit he had never driven before.

At 22 years of age he is clearly an outstanding talent and a potential legend.

Watch qulifying on Speed Channel saturday (2.00PM Eastern) and the race on Fox the following day.

Taking nothing from Schumi or even Kimi, I have to say that the only other F1 rookie — not the same, of course, as a complete open-wheel road-racing newbie — who’s come even close to showing the same kind of magic as Lewis was Juan Pablo Montoya. I saw him drive at Sears Point about ten years ago in a Barber Dodge, and even with 40 other cars on the track you could tell he was something special. He never clicked with the F1 culture, but Bernie’s loss is Nascar’s gain. And what Lewis did in Canada last week was astonishing, given that the Villeneuve circuit probably holds the record for consistently breaking veteran drivers’ legs. Kubica was damned lucky to get off as lightly as he did...

It takes hard work and complete dedication. That he would sacrifice so much to develop his gift makes his story all the more compelling.

Sorry for bursting your bubble and pointing out that he is a good, but not great, singer. I even stated that his is an inspiring story. I’ve got nothing against the guy, but he’s no Caruso.

Incidentally, I’m an orchestral musician. I’m not trying to prop myself up when I give an honest critique of his singing. The dude can sing rings around me. I only sing to the inside of my shower and car, and even they don’t seem to like it.

I feel sorry for the opera aficionados and expert opera singers who are complaining about this wonderful tenor. Their own hubris, envy, and exalted sense of self-importance have made them deaf to the beauty that thrills the rest of us in this man's story and voice.

They no longer hear music. They hear only notes.
